He can make millions more on all his commercials n stuff. Sigh</div></div>
I think your point about negotiating in reality here is key. There's nothing really to back up Marner's contract ask except agent bully tactics, the threat of sitting out or the threat of an OS that hasn't materialized yet.
If it comes down to it and he refuses to negotiate in good faith based on league comparables I'd rather they let him sit for the year than sign him to something outrageous.

I think the opposite, i think noone wants Nylander for 7 million right now in the league... except if they dont have to give up huge assests. Last year everybody would take Nylander for 7 mill $$$. It will be really interesting how that contract will work in long run. I'm hoping for a bounce back season for Nylander, but you just never know.
Will Babcock put Nylander with Matthews again? And i mean almost 95%+ of Icetime. Nylander + Matthews together. What you think about this?
U forget about the part with this statement, that Marner is still improving every year, and he didn't reach his peak yet. Or you think Marner peaked at like Age 21? I don't think so...</div></div>
I was talking about a scenario where Marner doesn't sign by Dec 1, and sits the whole season. And I stand by what I said, Marner is a 60-70 point player without JT.

That's a new rumour. The previous rumour was he turned down 10m X 8. Doesn't really matter what offer he turned down previously. If that's the best offer he gets, he may have to sign it or play ball this winter.
The very comparable Aho signed 8.5m X 5. No logical reason he gets that much more than that, despite the overpay for Matthews.

I am just not buying the $11M figure for Marner. I still think he will be lucky to get $9.5M.
As for the lineup, I see Nick Shore taking the 4C job and I don't see Trevor Moore being bumped out of the lineup.

Sure give Marner the same as Tavares...on his contract coming of ELC. I believe it was 5.5 million x 5 years. Prorate it up for cap hit %
If you are suggesting comparing Marner to Tavares' UFA contract thats silly. Tavares had the ability to negotiate with any team in the league and could sign with them without them having to give up FOUR FIRST ROUNDERS for anything over 10.5 million AAV. Tavares reportedly turned down 13-14 million per year from SJS.
Tavares is also a centre and was a top 5 goal scorer and top 10 point scorer in the league in the 5 years before joining the leafs.
(a) centres are more valuable
(b) goals are more valuable
(c) until Marner was connected with said superstar he was a good winger, a great second line winger, and okay first line winger (22 goals and 69 points). But he was no superstar.

Mikheyev, Ilya 4 $1,200,000 - crazy, we have not seen him play, and any depth player you sign 1.5Mil and under, 1-2 years tops... you can literally find them in the bargin bin every free agency
Marchment, Mason 4 $1,000,000 - crazy term yet again. 4 Mil for an unproven guy who is a depth piece at best. Bargain bin hunting if he plays over his worth
Gauthier, Frédérik 5 $1,000,000 - crazy even worse that Marchment. 4th line centers grow on tree's. We got Spezza for 700K for a year. Bargain hunt. Every 100K of savings matters from a cap Team
Dermott, Travis 5 $3,000,000 - Great COntract, I like it... keeps him locked up long term as he breaks out
Harpur, Ben 4 $1,000,000 - this guy is literally the worst. the exact opposite of what Dubas wants his Defence to be. Throw this $$$ and Term in the trash and send him to the marlies
Kivihalme, Teemu 4 $1,000,000 - WHO??? WHY the term FFS
Bracco, Jeremy 4 $1,000,000 - eh, he hasnt proven anything yet. And Again why the term. Trade him while he is a mystery box and worth more than if he tried in the NHL and failed.
Muzzin, Jake 6 $5,500,000 - Not bad signing. I would rather sign Barrie and we have Dermott and Sandin almost ready
van Riemsdyk, Trevor 6 $3,000,000 - big overpay for a 3rd pair. Also the term... jeeeeze, thats what screws teams over the most. Dubas needs flexibility and this is a big overpay.</div></div>

Few things here: 1. the league has changed. Young players get paid. Simple as that.
Taxes matter. A contract in tampa doesn't really say anything about a contract in toronto. That 9.5 that kucherov signed for...he would have to make 12.8 in toronto to get the same amount of money.
Matthews matters. The leafs did this to themselves. Why should Marner be taking 2x6 when Matthews got 5x11.634. That is a joke. Offer him that, he'll take two years of arbitration and be gone in UFA.
Marner is better than Aho. Come on.</div></div>
matthews is significantly more impactful than marner.
also how is he looking at this through "rabid leaf fan glasses"? he's giving concrete citations on why marner shouldn't be anywhere near 11 million.
the taxes argument is tired and overcited. there's a ton of considerations when determining taxes and it varies widely between players.

Marners best comparables
Kanes 2nd contract - 6.3Mil/5 years - 11% of cap, that is 9mil/5 years in todays money
Aho agreed he is worth 8.5mil/5 years and Aho is the same age, plays center, drives play better, is better defensively and scores more goals
Point - rumored between 8.2 and 9.2/5 and he is better than Aho and Marner.
And ok Mitch wants 11.5/5. Thats not in the realm of reality. Mitch has no neogitiation rights, no arbitration rights and has rumoredly turned town Offersheets due to term or wanting to stay. Even if that is a lie no one has done it to him. And now how many teams can actually do it. It aint happening. Mitch has lost all power.
Sorry Mitch, we have your comparables and fair deals for others around the league. Agree or keep living in a fantasy land</div></div>

No one but Mitch, Paul and Dreger really give a sh** what <em>"Marner seems to want"</em>.
Matthews is <strong>1ST in the NHL</strong> in goals per minute over the last 3 years (since entering the NHL).
Marner<strong> isn't in the top 30</strong> in goals per minute, assists per minute or points per minute (and he's a winger).

Well Dubas has said publically that he will play Ceci, take that for what it’s worth. I’m not positive what is going on with his contract though... seems a bit fishy that it isn’t signed. Is dubas still hoping he signs his QO? Lots of reports they have agreed on 4.5m...
As for marner I agree. It will be tail between the legs time soon enough. Aho has set the market for the big rfa’s. I expect Rantanen and point to sign soon enough pushing Mitch into a corner.

Tough Decisions - Panic Mode
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Chiller</b></div><div>It is weirdly not that much more with the sales tax. It not as significant. It is something, but not crazy.
And comparables, yes 2009- Kane he signed his 2nd deal at 11%. % of cap s hould be similar over the years. The trend and they have very similar point totals. Also, if you look at Brayden Point and Ratanen, you have "experts" who say Mitch is worth 11.5M saying Brayden and Ratanen are only worth 8.5ish. Meanwhile Ratanen had a better points, Brayden plays center and was 4 points shy of Marner. Doesnt really make much sense that Mitch is worth more.
Also, before this year, Mitch and Nylander were trending the same. Mitch had a great year, some credit is given to JT, there is proof he makes great players better. Also in a league where the objective is to score goals, Matthews is on another level compared to most if not all other people in the NHL at 5v5. He is also a center, a more valuable position.</div></div>
Exactly, if im point or Rantaanen id wait to see what marner signs for and ask for the exact same. They are arguably better players and deserve for money based off their playoff success. But if im Dubas I hope those two players sign for reasonable numbers before July 1 and offer marner a comparable deal, the marner camp will have little leverage justifying that he is worth millions more then those two players.
