<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rinzler</b></div><div>Fair point, I agree Dubas wouldn't be the type to crack to pressure, as we witnessed with the nylander contract last year, he was willing to let him sit. But I feel like a person of marner's caliber, who lead the team in scoring for 2 seasons, he may be inclined to get a deal done before the season starts, to avoid losing out on a player that is a definite difference maker. This could mean that he may have to give in a bit (not fully crack) to marner's ask. I can definitely see marner signing for 10.65-10.85 MM for 5-6 years.</div></div>
Marner can ask for 10.6-10.85. But thats a joke if Dubas agrees to it. Thats a huge overpayment for Marner. A definate difference maker? Yeah sure but is he the best difference maker they have, id argue no. Also you talk about leading the team in points. Sure he did. But why did he. his 2nd year, Matthews was injured. I would argue MAtthews probably would have got over 69 points if he was healthy.
Last season, Marner increased 25+. JT only increased +4. Now I think they both make eachother better, but Marner playing with an Elite center wooha. I keep asking myself What would marners point totals of been if he wasnt playing with JT all the time. If he had Kadri, Kapanen, Johnsonn Hyman. You need an elite finisher if your marner. ive watched passes bounce of Hyman, Kap, Kadri sticks, skates, shin pads, or not even being in the right position all together too many times over the years with him. In my head Marner would get 70-82 points. Which is still great.
But we need to be reasonable. JT is elite. Him with Marner is amazing but defintately helped point totals.
In terms of AAV few comparables
Kanes 2nd contract- 11% of the cap, basically been compared to Marner his whole life
Point - Rumored 8-9Mil/5. 1 year older, scores more goals plays center
AHO- Same age, same draft. Plays center(more valuable), scores more goals(more valuable), better defensively, and at least equal to marner in production/skill. Signed an offersheet, agreed he is worth 8.5/5. Carolina and Montreal also agreed he is worth that. Boom best comparable.
So Marner 6/2, 7.5/3, 8/4, 8.5/5, 9/6, 9.5/7, 10/8 Fair value Sign please
Also if Dubas is smart he starts leaking trade rumors in august and scare marner into signing. if Marner wants to be a leaf(as is believed) and Paul and Ferris are posioning him with bad advice(as is believed) things will get sorted pretty quickly. Fair deal

Hey Logan, someone did Blink. Sebastian Aho. He signed an offer sheet and agree'd he is worth 8.5/5years.
Aho- same age as marner, center, scores more goals, better defensively, you can argue a better player but at the very least they are neck and neck.
In this league Goals and Centers get the most money, then RHD. Aho does both better. So in reality regardless of if Marner is better the comparable has been set. MArner SHOULD be worth less than Aho from those 2 things alone.
I think Marners Agent and Dad are toxic and giving Mitch bad advise. This will get settled in training camp I would assume because
1. Marner see's how missing it affected Nylander. You dont want that hate if you put up that performance after a huge deal
2. Dubas I think will start leaking trade rumors and cause marner to panic and sign a FAIR deal. Not a deal Dubas robs him blind, just a FAIR deal that matches his performance and comparables.

I don't think the average fan understands the cap hit the Leafs will have to take if he doesn't sign until November or December. All Leaf fans should be praying he signs a deal or offer sheet before September or the pressure will only grow.</div></div>
He basically needs to sign by start of season or he isnt playing. Cap hit will be something like 12Mil this year if he signs for fair value.
Marner has less and less leverage with every day. Ferris played the media, Dubas didnt cave, No offer sheets got signed, and now rumors and reports that he loves toronto and wants to be here. Marner will cave. He is getting bad advice from Ferris and his dad. Dubas shouldnt crack. What Dubas needs to do, is mid august start leaking trade rumors, how the leafs are looking into getting rid of marner. Scare the ****er and make him smarten up.
No one is asking mitch to take a paycut, but all your comparables, Kanes 2nd contract, points reported worth, aho signing for 8.5/5. Its facts. Aho also is a center, same draft year, better defensively and scores more goals. Goals + Center = more $$. thats also a fact. Also yes he got his most points ever, but how many points would you have passing it into the shin pads and skates and sticks of Kadri, Kapanen, Johnsson. JT elevates players and is a elite finnisher. Not to take away from Marner but those 2 compliment eachother so well.
IMO Marner is 6.5M/2y 7.5/3, 8.5/5, 9/6, 10/8

Gards: Very low AAV but i agree with you. I think he wants back. Why has he not signed with any other team in free agency. 50pt defencement dont grow on trees. But he could sign for that perhaps.

Term bothers me with Andersen over the $. I like the $ value. But can he remain elite in his mid-30s or will Woll, Scott or Kaskisuo step up in a big way

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>blowing_the_zone</b></div><div>Lol. The emptiness part might be a bit much. I don't know if messy contract negotiations should be confused with his level of consciousness or the purity of his soul..
But this is getting kinda weird. I mean, he absolutely does seem to want to be a leaf so the only way to read these OS threats is that they are empty threats by his camp. Marner's bluff is getting pretty transparent. I'm just not sure what they're trying to achieve with their tactics. it doesn't make much sense to me.</div></div>
Yeah I went a bit far there, but I thought it was great for some sarcasm and comedic relief.
I agree he wants to be a Leaf.
His camp has played this dance since the beginning. With his Dad speaking up saying Mitch is disrepected, to Ferris laughing the day of when Matthews signs, to this BS threats.
Every day that passes an offersheet gets less and less likely. How can teams now sign one and not screw up their cap this year or next.
Ferris, like he has done with 2-3 other clients, holds out, threatens the KHL or europe, days before training camp signs a contract... Rinse and repeat.
But the way Marners camp has treated this situation. Using the tactics, using dregger and the media. Its completely BS. I blame mitch. Nothing happens without his say. His agent works for him. Mitch is allowing this to happen to get his want. Whatever they haev going on isnt working, and so many fans have had thier feelings change about mitch. I hope its all smoke and mirrors and he realizes he is not matthews. But if he is that delusional, then wooha we are in trouble.

Again your points are emotion based. Taxes do not play a big roll. Also if you want to talk about taxes, talk about how the leafs Offset that small amount by frontloading the contract with Bonus's. Makes that point moot.
Aho and marner we can have an arguement on who is better. I have time for that discussion. But Fact they are so similar. But fact- aho plays center. Fact-he scores more goals. Fact-both of those things are more valuable and give you more money in the NHL, regardless of team.
Matthews- best 5v5 goal scorer in the entire league last 3 years
Marner- not even top 30 in goals, not even top 10 in assists.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>ya, he's citing bogus things. That would be like me saying, well, drew doughty signed a 7x7 deal off his entry deal, so since he's a bit better than mcavoy when he was that age, mcavoy should get 8 years x 6 million. No, it was like 8 years ago, so that's absurd.
His argument boils down to, "I don't want Marner to get a whole bunch of money and screw up my cap. So he won't. And here are the weird pieces of evidence I'm randomly cherry picking to show why."
Just, no.</div></div>
You are being picky and choosy with the facts we give you. They arent weird pieces of evidence or cherry picking. They are common, obvious and current facts. You just dont like them because they hurt your point.
Also the entire time we have been talking we have talked about % of cap. So cap goes up, what the person makes goes up. Therefore you can compare people who sign on different years. Math.
Youve been using your "pro-marner goggles of emotion", I have given concrete examples without them

Leafs opening lineup with Marner signed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>capfriendlyaccount</b></div><div>I specified in the description that this if Marner signs for asking price. Personally I think Dubas will cave and he will, just like he caved with Nylander. Nylanders comparables were Ehlers, and Pastrnak to a lesser extent since Pastrnak is and was better. Ehlers signed for 8 percent of the cap. Pastrnak signed for 8.9 percent. Nylander signed for 9.4 percent. Obviously, Dubas was uncomfortable with the idea of Nylander sitting out the rest of the year, and he caved. I expect Marner to be the same. It could very well turn out differently. It's just an opinion.</div></div>
Sure, negotiating happens. But Nylander being worth 6.5/6 and signing for a now cap hit of 6.9(5% over payment) is vastly different than marner wanting 11.5/5 vs a 8.5/5(35% overpayment)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>why wouldn't he have signed this by now were he willing. he wants matthews money. He'll probably get close to it. What do you mean facts? This is all kind of what we think will happen right? Marner has lead the leafs in points the last two years. there's a fact for you. He's going to get paid, and it isn't going to be a laughable 6x2.</div></div>
This is the problem. You are arguing for emotion and feelings and what he wants. I want the house I own to be worth 5Million dollars. But if the market of the area in which I live and what buyers who want to buy are willing to pay is only 800K, well im **** out of luck. I may be upset my house wont sell for 5Mil, but what i am asking for is not in the realm of reality. Its literally the exact same thing with Mitch Marner.
6x2 is laughable?
Kucherov took a 6.5% cap hit for 3 years. 4.5Mil/year. Today that would only be 5Mil/3. Its in the realm of reasonable for Marner to take a 6x2. Kucherov at the time was at least as good as marner. Most likely better than him.
Kane-Marners comparable since CHL, and even the NHL. Very similar players and skillset. 2nd contract 6.3Mil/5 years. Total 11% of the Cap. in todays Money 9.3Mil/5 years
Aho - same age as marner, drives play better, plays center(more valuable), scores more goals(more valueable) and is better defensively. 8.5Mil/5. He agreed he was worth this by signing it.
Point - Basically rumors in TBL have him around 8.2-9.2/5 year deal. Point is better than both Aho and Marner.
Marner - has no recieved a single offersheet. Has said he wants to stay in Toronto. Boom negotiating power is gone
Also serious question - would marner have scored as many goals playing without Taraves. Id argue no. You need a finisher. We've seen what marner can do, but marner making passes to Kadri, Kapanen, Johnsson, Hyman all year, having them mishandle the puck, have it bounce of shinguards, not being in the right position is not the same as passing to another elite guy in JT. Tavares points went up +4. Marners +25 and Tavares has a history of making players around him better. This is not a slight against Mitch. Mitch is Elite. Mitch and Tavares make eachother better.
Context is important. Facts are important. If there was no Salary cap, give Marner the sun and the moon.
The market, his team, the league. He aint worth Matthews Money
