Tough because Batherson has been so good of late, and has a great contract, but you have to take that imo. Trade Chychrun for a top 6 replacement winger, then get a goalie.

Why not just trade Chychrun if you can sign DeMelo?
Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - DeMelo
Brannstrom - JBD
Now that's a solid defense.
Bourque + 1st would be a PIPE dream, no way they get as much for Chychrun</div></div>
Sens need WAY better than JBD as a regular. He's not an every day player on a good hockey team. This will be a hot take to a lot of Sens fans, but most playoff teams have at least 7 D better than him.

I actually don’t think Karlsson makes a lot of sense for us at this point, but the emotional and nostalgic pull certainly appeals to me. I want Staios to overpay if necessary to get some big, strong defensive dmen next year.</div></div>
He's undersized, but incredibly effective in his minutes, especially defensively. If anything, I think his size would be more of a concern in the top 4. He doesn't need to be Torey Krug, and he doesn't need to be a top 4 Dman. He is what he is, and he's very effective in his role. Personally I don't think Ottawa moves him and ends up better for it. There aren't many 3rd pairing LD available this summer who are better than him, but it's just one of those things where it feels inevitable that he will be moved.

Thread:
Trading Chabot AND Chych
I think there's a bunch of reasons why this doesn't work for me.
First off, I don't think you want Sanderson with Karl. It sounds great in theory, but in my opinion, if Sandy is out there, you want the puck on his stick as much as possible, and the same is true of Karlsson. Zub is such a natural compliment for Sanderson, I think any blueline adjustments start by understanding that this pairing is the only thing that works. Don't mess with it. Keeping those two together, I really don't see a combination that works with Karlsson. No coach in the league is putting the Eriks together for any length of time, and Graves-Karlsson already isn't great for Pittsburgh.
If you're keeping Brannstrom, you want to keep him in that same role. He's really good as the 3LD. If you're adding Karlsson to the mix, you want to bring in someone to be that Philips/Kuba/Methot type who really brings the best out of him. If you could add Jamie Oleksiak and Karlsson, then I'd be comfortable moving Chabot and Chychrun. Then you look for a 3rd pair guy to play with Brannstrom. Guys like Chatfield or Desharnais would fit in nicely with him imo, and probably fit the price point better than DeMelo.
The one sticking point that I've gone back and forth on all season is what to do with Chabot. He's a great hockey player, even if he's far from a perfect one. He has stretches like his last 15 games or so where he genuinely makes his contract look like a bargain, but he's also got warts in his game, particularly away from the puck. I also have serious concerns if he's ever gonna be healthy enough to be a guy you can rely on in the post season.
Also the Graves deal is just... bad. Definitely not touching it.
I think if there's the right deal to bring Karlsson here, and the right deal to bring in a great fit to be his partner, then you seriously consider making it happen and moving Chychrun and Chabot to make it work, and keep Branny as the 3LD. I think by far the more reasonable turn of events is Chychrun gets moved, Chabby stays, they go out and get the right guy to be Chabot's partner, and then address the 3rd pair. I kind of think Brannstrom is gone and they look to add size to the 3rd pair.

And Ik I'm some random on capfriendly but my best friend is neighbours with his parents lol, and apparently he has some frustrations with the organization. Are they enough to get him out as an RFA? Who knows. This could be normal. But he isn't some lock to stay, it is possible he gets moved</div></div>
His name was briefly out there after the Tarasenko signing when they literally didn't have cap space to sign him. Since then, he got suspended, got signed, and by all accounts really appreciated the way the team handled his suspension. There's no story here lmao
Also his Dad has been Sens posting on Twitter all season

I think they do way better on the Chychrun deal tbh. Debrincat had a lot of leverage because he was an RFA with no contract. They could really only deal with teams he'd extend with. Chychrun having one year left will bring in a wider range of teams, including teams who think they can extend him and teams willing to risk leaving him unsigned.

The track record of him being good, and him only being 25 means more than the 40+ games of mediocre to bad hockey he's played under Martin. Even this season he's clearly demonstrated he's a better player under a different coach. 21 points in 25 games for DJ. it sucks because his poor play has torched his odds of sticking with the team he wanted to play for, but they'll still get a good return for him, just not what they paid.

Meh, if the return makes it worthwhile I'd look into it, but honestly I think the 2mil in the first 4 years is more damaging than the extra 1.3mil in the last four years is. 1.3mil 5-8 years from now just won't be a very significant amount of the cap.
Honestly, the buyout isn't that intimidating to me. I think best case scenario is they attach a 2nd or 3rd or something, eat 50% and send him to a team that's willing to buy him out for picks. Neither team would be sweating 50% of his already reasonable buyout.

Not sure how much of this Steve can fix over one offseason
This year for him was about identifying who's a part of the future and who's a pretender. Major surgery begins in the offseason, but it's a process. Isolate your true core (Tkachuk, Stützle, Sanderson, Pinto), your expanded core ( Greig, Zub, Giroux) and the other guys you keep (Joseph, Kelly, probably Batherson, maybe Chabot), then get to work surrounding that group with guys who can play the right way. Get me guys like Coleman, Oleksiak, Pageau, Roy (as examples). It's not about building a cup team in one summer, it's about laying the foundation and building a winning identity.
If Staios doesn't prove to be any better than Dorion at identifying pro talent, this team could be heading to another implosion in a few years.

You're not replacing both of them with Karlsson, you're replacing one of them with Karlsson, and replacing the other with a stout defensive LD to play with Karlsson. There are a bunch of options but you were to get a guy like Jamie Oleksiak, an Oleksiak-Karlsson pairing would be better than Chabot and Chychrun imo.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mike7856</b></div><div>Too many offensive minded players, and not enough effort on the defensive game. It’s great to score but you also have to defend. I’d lean to keep branny and move Chabot but his contract will be a tough sell. Add in some good depth and a steady goalie and this team can be a lot better. Although I feel like I’ve said this for 3 years now lol</div></div>
Honestly, I kind of like the idea of moving Chychrun and Chabot, bringing in Karlsson, and finding him a good fitting LD partner. A 2nd pair of Oleksiak-Karlsson would be insanely good imo (not that Oleksiak is necessarily available). I'd also really like Jalen Chatfield for the 3RD spot.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Borocop</b></div><div>Chychrun is a hard one for me. I don't think he is a good fit, but at the same time if the return on him does not get players or pieces who are good fits, I really dont know if it makes more sense to give him another run at RD with Sanderson and bank that he will figure it out, or to deal him for whatever you can.</div></div>
Chychrun has arguably been Ottawa's 5th best Dman since DJ Got fired. 21 pts in 25 games for DJ, 11 in 41 for Jacques. If he's not producing he's not effective. Staios can't get hung up on what Ottawa paid, just on what the best deal out there is. Imo his weak play under Martin means the run back isn't an option. He's not shown himself to be a part of the solution, and it makes way more sense to ship him out in the summer.
