They may consider it. They are considering Pietrangelo at $8M.
The fit isn't ideal for the Leafs who need need size and stability on the back end, but the compensation going to NYR makes sense.

No one in the league is paying him $10M. Not in this economic climate. Not with so much uncertainty and a flat cap.

My point is that should be the most the Leafs can offer him.
7y @ $8.25M also gets A LOT more attractive when you factor in maximum bonusing like the AM34 and MM16 deals.

Not if the deals were already signed previously. Goat played on less than minimum deal last season.

I agree - giving up the 2nd rounder is not something DET would be interested in.
I do like the framework of the deal though. Bernier and Daley are two players that could help the Leafs immensely.

Jones has two more years left at $5.4M after this season. IMO, he's gone after that. This deal gives CBJ a 2nd-3rd line winger, a future Top-4 dman and another scoring winger (projected 2nd line).
I don't think it's a laugher at all.

E Kane for J Drouin straight up
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CLR</b></div><div>Why so</div></div>
TBH, I wasn't aware Kane Kane was getting $7 AAV. I think he's the better player, but that deal is enormous. It's probably a more even deal than I originally thought.
Problem with Drouin isn't the talent or contract.. His hockey IQ is awful. When you watch him play, it's so obvious that his brain can't keep up with his feet and hands.

To get under the cap we need to get as close as possible before putting the LTIR guys on LTIR. The cuts today get us to 10k under the cap. I imagine there will be further shuffling to get the lineup they actually want after LTIR kicks in.</div></div>
Yea this is a great point that many aren't aware of. Getting as close to the $81.5M cap is imperative for the Leafs.

Probably because the narrative coming from the Marner camp is completely unreasonable?! It doesn't matter where Marner wants to be... it matters what the Leafs are willing to offer him.

Thread:
Im sorry this is disgusting
The time has come for Dubas to crank up the pressure on Marner. To date, Dubas and the Leafs have been completely professional during this negotiation - that ends now.
Dubas' playbook:
Sep 11 - Make best and final offers at 2y, 3y, 6y, 7y, 8y to Marner. Maner has the ability to accept any of these offers. Let him know that he has a week to accept the offers. If not accepted by Sep 18th, make the offers public.
Sep 18 - Make offers public. Let everyone know that these offers expire effective Sep 30.
Sep 30 - Announce that a deal has been reached or that negotiations are officially closed. Marner will either sit for the season or be traded.
The above strategy will not sit well with Marner's camp, but at least it ends all public speculation about what the actual offers are. This puts the ball completely in the player's hands. The time to be professional is over.
