<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vikhodush</b></div><div>Only if the Canes QO him. If he doesn’t play well this season Canes are going to let him walk - that’s the worst case scenario for them bc they’ll be out a first rounder with nothing to show for it next year. But it’s not the worst thing in the world since they’re not locked in long term and they remain flexible from a cap perspective which is their number one priority right now.

It also sounds like they’ve laid groundwork with KK to extend him to a longer deal if MTL doesn’t match at a number under his QO. Which makes sense from his perspective bc at the end of the day he’s getting way more money than he would’ve with MTL and he’s getting a fresh start in a less pressure filled place which could be good for him. He knows if he’s not willing to take less than his QO the team will just let him walk.

They unfortunately did something similar with Ned - they couldn’t come to a number bc they didn’t trust he was a legit starter in this league (thought small sample size in front of a great d was the reason for his success) so instead of risking going to arb they let him go for essentially nothing. KK knows they’ll do the same with him if it comes down to it but his camp is smart to know this is the best financial situation for him even if he signs an extension at a lower AAV then his QO calls for.</div></div>

I don't completely understand QOs so this was actually very helpful. Thanks for the feedback.
