I agree that a capfreeze doesn’t make sense but I doubt they’d do anything more than a small increase to 82/82.5.. either way I doubt Johnsson is back next year

Two of top all around defensemen in the league;) Dermott and Holl are awfully expendable at that point. Offense takes a big hit, but Johnsson was probably on the way out anyways with Robertson and Mikeheyev coming up and Anderson adds size power and some serious offensive potential if you look at more than just last years stats lol.

What i think will happen
Pretty accurate however IMO,
Moore will either play in the top nine, make league minimum or be traded.
Lilegren won’t be in your top 4 over Dermott
Anderson will likely get more money that 6.5
Its much more likely they resign either Muzzin or Barrie then Dougie
Kapanen and Bracco switch spots

D next year with no big money if Ceci is good but not special
The team would be a lot better if you didn’t sign TVR and Ceci (6.5) and traded either Hyman or Mikheyev (2.3).
That’d give you almost 9 million to sign either Barrie or Muzzin and a couple league minimum guys.

Keeping Gardiner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RobbieS</b></div><div>Then what happens when Dermott/Hyman are ready to return?</div></div>
Dermott makes less than Sandin who would be sent down before he burns a year off his contract anyways and Hyman only makes 1,300,000 more than JP/Mikheyev which they could make up for by carrying less players on the roster and shuffling guys back and forth from the marlies like they did last year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JayTea</b></div><div>Oilers send out $0 in salary, but take on $4.5m in salary for their current cap space of $2.4m at a position Ceci isn't an upgrade for them at. Makes perfect sense, Oilers accept.</div></div>
Lol I’ll be honest I didn’t look at the oilers situation. The point of the trade was to show that in order to resign Gardiner, Ceci will have to be shipped off without taking money back which should be entirely doable, but i guess apparently not to the oilers:p
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NR1203</b></div><div>That's a lot for Gardiner. If anyone had offered him a 6m AAV he'd be signed by now. Oilers have no incentive to take Ceci, no space either, and Dubas seems to really like him (or at least want to give him a shot this year).</div></div>
All valid points and what would be my bet to likely happen is that Ceci stays and Gardiner signs elsewhere. However 6 mil would still a bargain because of the three year term. A lot of teams would pay 6 million on a 1/2/3 year deal but Gardiner understandly wants a longer term contract. If he really wants to stay a Leaf he’d need to sacrifice term because in three years the leafs will have more important issues like resigning Reilly and Sandin who should be taking over his role by then anyways.

Crafty with the cap
You where doing fine until you traded Kadri for Larsson, that’s a bonehead move. They have basically the same caphit and Kadri is worth more than Larsson in terms of trade value and to the Leafs as a team. Petan will be fighting for a spot on the fourth line, having him at 3C is atrocious. Don’t get me wrong, Larsson would be great but filling one hole by making a bigger one elsewhere doesn’t get you any farther ahead.
(And oilers have 3 great centers already and no RD)

The following year, there's money to rent a Center or advance a prospect.</div></div>
The leafs don’t have a legimate center prospect to advance and if you haven’t noticed Patrick Marleau is struggling to produce in a sheltered role this year and certainly wont be able to drive a line next year. The strength of the leafs is that they have 3 lines that can hurt you. Trading one of Nylander or Kadri might make sense but trading both is shooting yourself in the foot.

The difference from Nylander and Zaitsev to Domi and Alzner isn’t worth a first round pick IMO. I would rather keep the first and Nylander and trade Zaitsev. (by packaging him with a pick or maybe brown). Also, moving Nylander and Kadri leaves a huge whole at 3C.

Just an idea on lineup
Not optimal to have Kadri on the wing. I’d much rather see something like this
Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Moore-Kadri-Kapanen
Ennis/Petan-Marleau-Brown
And hopefully Babcock leans heavy on his top three lines

I like the Clifford move even if he doesn’t dress half the games. If your getting pushed around and morale is low it’s good to have the option to add some size. Either way I’m hoping the fourth line doesn’t get a lot of minutes in the playoffs.

Toronto Maple Leafs 20192020 Opening Night Roster
You need to have 22 skaters on the roster and that’s gonna put you in salary trouble. You’re also being pretty optimistic about those signings, but I agree we need to move Zaitsev and unfortunately probably Brown too .
Also I doubt they’ll rush Liljegren into the lineup next year.

Kucherov gets 9.5X8 Draisaitl gets 8.5X8 but Marner gets more than 7.5 on a 4 year contract? Kapanen could definitely demand more but worst case scenario they could give him 2.25 on a 1 year contract.

Marleau will be off the books and the salary cap is projected to continue rising which frees up 8 million to sign Dermott and give Petro a raise if needed. Johnsson Moore and Grundstrom are good but replaceable. The leafs can keep whoever they can afford and trade who they can’t. But yes Gardiner would have to take a discount to stay (although he isn’t having the greatest year rn so that might help)

Worst case scenario you have to move Zaitsev or trade Brown not Kadri. You randomly overpaid and made a bunch of bonehead trades and still the leafs wouldn’t move Kadri. Contending teams don’t trade good players on value contracts. NHL GMs get paid a lot of money to find better solutions than whatever the heck this is.

Pietrangelo is a huge difference maker and this is probably what it would take to get him.

Buying out Marleau and Resigning him
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>1. Dubas and Pridham didn't sign Marleau. That was Lou
2. I don't think cash can be traded anymore
3. Marleau would need to agree to waive his NMC (both to get traded and to be placed on waivers)
4. I don't think this is very likely
5. Despite 1-4, it is theoretically possible. Leafs trade Marleau + something Zona likes to the Coyotes. Coyotes place him on waivers. If he clears, they buy him out. Then the Leafs re-sign him.
6. Given his low salary in the final year, it would only cost Zona $416,667 in each of 19-20 and 20-21, while the cap hit is $6,250,00 for 19-20. This could be attractive from their point of view especially if they're getting a pick or player they like
7. At 1 year and 6.25m, I am not certain Marleau would pass through waivers. So, would Marleau agree to waive his NTC knowing there's a chance he wouldn't have any control over being claimed by another team? Would zona
Again...it's possible...possibly attractive from Zona and Toronto's point of view, but from everything I've read about Marleau, I can't see a sceneario where he'd waive his NTC</div></div>
Thanks, you bring up a lot of good points, I hadn’t considered anyone claiming him off waivers due his contract but that would definitely be a problem. Marleau isn’t going to waive his NTC but I had hoped Dubas could put together a sales pitch about how he could make more money and still stay with the team while increasing his chances at a cup. The more I think about it the more it seems too risky for Marleau. Really unfortunate because it could’ve been a win-win-win situation.
