<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JoeROFLCOPTER</b></div><div>they'd have 9 1sts in the next three years, three promising young forwards (four if you count Krebs), 7 ELCS, and three contracts that extend beyond three years. In terms of how this team looks, it'll be fine. Now, these returns themselves are extremely optimistic, but if for some reason they managed to even get half of this, they'd be golden in 3-4 years.</div></div>

...perhaps you missed the "as a sabres fan" part. I draw your attention to buffalo tanking for jack eichel and how they still managed to consistantly suck. Its a regular conversation how many x-sabres are having success. Also i draw attention to the oilers. Without McDavid (which generational talents in your draft are not a guarantee) they probably would still be competing with arizona. Good young talent and picks don't = wins. Theres still a lot of peices you need on a good team and in theory you'll have em with your picks but you'll be in a world where your constantly paying guys to stay one more year and choosing between signing a guy you've seen have moderate success or putting in a rookie with higher potential.
Then theres as you said. Those picks and trades arent realistic so thats not the team you'll get.
Now concider this is the problem you didntbget the return you hoped for or is this a bad plan for success because it might not even work if this ridiculous goes through. With all these assets moving around this team adds 0 proven nhl talent and is going to worry about leadership and development next year...cuz all you need is talent even though only 1 guy can shoot the puck at a time.
I also take the mental side of young talent facing adversity for the first time and having no one on the team to help them adapt. Leavingnthe coaching staff to handle that is a good way to end up ruining good talent.
End of the day, i wouldnt trust the gm that made this team to develope it as they haven't shown me there ability lead to success only to get stuff thst could.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gretzkyghosts</b></div><div>Let's examine last years TDL.

Eleven teams traded 12 first round picks.
Three missed the playoffs Ottawa, Vancouver and Washington.
Six were bounced in the first round Boston, Los Angeles, Tampa, New York Islanders and Rangers
Two made it the second round New Jersey, Edmonton and Toronto.
Neither Florida nor Vegas traded first round picks, but the Knights did give up Zach the 30th OA from the 2021 draft to get Ivan Barbashev who had an excellent playoff with 7 goals and 18 pts in 22 games and Diliberatore a 2018 6th round pick to get Blueger who had 2 goals.
Ivan had 6 regular season goals after joining the Knights only two more than Greenway.
The Sabres picked up Greenway, and Stillman while Florida did not make any deals.
Stillman actually played very well registering a 55% CF playing with nearly every other defenseman.
At the TDL Buffalo was nearly as active as the Knights (Stillman and Greenway played a total of 35 regular season games while Barbashev and Blueger played 41) and more active than the Panthers.

Maybe they could have done more, certainly let's not trade away any first round picks to make the playoffs.
Compared to Boston and Tampa, they did nothing but they were both huge favorites in the playoffs, Buffalo was not.
Next year looks really bright for the Sabres as Tampa lost Killorn and Colton and Boston lost Bergeron, Stillman, Hall and Krejci as well as Orloff and Bartuzzi who they picked up for the playoff run.</div></div>

I was talking about the off season not the tdl. Hence referencing hinestroza and sheehan. Those should have been good vets to start the season not cast offs because;

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boos</b></div><div>Agreed that they should have added, but on defense in November with all the blueline injuries. That said, last season was about development and evaluations. Did KAGM miss an opportunity to make the playoffs by doing nothing? Sure. But it's done. Is he missing opportunities now? Maybe. We just don't know what opportunities that were offered him.</div></div>

Last year was about developement and analasys of the team. Im not sure what our guys learned from hinestroza and sheehan but i bet with 15 mil we could have found some better mentors. Also the best way to get your team playoff ready is to have have your developing talent earn they're spot from veteran performers.
Recently listened to 32 thoughts pod. JJ Peterka after talking about how hard it is to get a puck from Tage (with all his talent and size) is asked who the best keep away guy on the team is. Apparently Kyle Okposo...because hes just knows what to do, he has so much experience and understanding.
Im not saying we should have sold the farm and i don't deny hindsite is 20/20 but fortunately you can look through my record on here and see a year ago today i was arguing this same point. Get vets to mentor, pay what ever ridiculous amount you have too on a short term deal, if our prospects surpass the vets, bring em up, waive the vets. Its exactly what we did with hinestroza, sheehan, and bjork. Except we should have got guys that set a better bar than "wouldnt be on an nhl team if not for the sabres". The team was inconsistent and stretched out some inpressive losing streaks. That could have been help by a couple (2) 30 something guys with winning records. Especially a dman to mentor our young core and ride the pine most games.
The only reason this matters as the team is making the same mistake this year. Is this another evauluation year? Was everybody just so great there was not a single player to move on from or improve on? Nobody who you'll trade a single mid lvl prospect with to mix up the bottom 6 or a top prospect for a top 6 guy....
Just seems more likely they're doing nothing than there's nothing to do.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gretzkyghosts</b></div><div><strong>Olofsson</strong> is mentioned in many trades not because he is bad but rather he has value and earns nearly five times as much as any ELC. The Sabres will need to use his current salary hit on Dahlin and Power immidiately and Quinn and Peterka in the near future.
It is really difficult to believe Olofsson while playing about 500 fewer minutes out scored DeBrincat last season and has more goals than Boeser over the last 4 seasons also playing about 500 fewer minutes, is a <strong>CAP DUMP</strong> while earning significantly less than either of them who are also not noted for playing much defense.

While it is true there are many first round draft picks who never see NHL ice, the reverse is also true.
Peterka and Kulich were drafted 34th and 28th OA, if one were to question NHL GM's it is safe to presume many would give up at least the 15th OA for either of them if not more.
<strong>Ostlund</strong> as a 19 yo is playing against men and is doing very well, he has certainly maintained his first round value after two years.

<strong>Jokiharju</strong> is a vanilla defenseman, he does not score nor does he hit.
In the 2021-'22 season ONLY Dahlin had more ice time than he.
Last season he was by a wide margine used more than any defenseman not named Rasmus, Mattias or Owen.
If Granato likes him so do I.

Obviously Travis Konecny is a great talent who had two different seasons of nearly posting a pt/gm.
Buffalo is building a team of players who want to be in Buffalo, drafted by Buffalo, came to Buffalo as a younger player, have a connection to a player/coach in Buffalo, have been on the team for a number of years or play on the fourth line or 3rd pairing:
Want to be in Buffalo, obviously Tuch and Okposo,
Drafted by Buffalo Peterka, Cozens, Quinn, Dahlin, Samuelsson, Power, Luukkonen, Olofsson, Bryson
Came to Buffalo as a young player Thompson, Krebs, Jokiharju, Levi
Have a connection Stillman, Johnson, Greenway
Play a less significant roll Jost, Comrie,
Have been a Sabre for a while Girgensons and Skinner
Which catagory would Travis Konecny fit into?
Peterka, Quinn, Benson, Kulich all have the potential to average 60 pts/82 games as Travis has done excluding his first season.

Well that is my tome for the week.</div></div>

I get what your saying, thier plan is pretty evident but it seems a little dreamy to think you won't need to add a piece to your roster.
Perhaps TK makes a new category of
Players that come here to win and fall in love along the way.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>worldwidesensei</b></div><div>Lol, we have room for Ostlund. He is choosing to play in SWE. He was just recently drafted -and by KA. Mid-first-round picks take ~5 years to make the NHL...if they make it.

How don't we have room for Joker? He was our #3 D-man last year. We suddenly have no room for a cheap, cost-controlled, RFA eligible RD?

And how many points/playoff wins does TK bring? 1-2 points? Maybe a playoff series win or 2 in the next 2 years? I mean, BUF is starving for even that....but greater things are to come if we aren't so hasty.</div></div>

You may notice Tanev has been added to this team, so if joker stays either he or one of the overpaid UFA's aquired is a 7th defensemen and stillman an 8th.

Kulich is already impressing, savoie is highly touted and the nhl roster has 4 1st round picks straight down the middle. So wether he chooses to or not ostlund will have to drive his value up in sweden as there is very little space for him to impress in north america. Ahl 3rd line c isnt easy to climb up from...and if he does to were?

If you don't see the value of a player like TK to the sabres roster i don't know what to say. Its not all about points (if your trying to win) only 1 guy at a time gets the puck. The rest of the time its working the boards and sound positioning. If you would rather play this season out depending on olofsson's forecheck threat, ostlunds positioning on another continent and a pick that hopefully is closer to a 2nd than a top 10 then thats apparently where we disagree.

The sabres will miss 0 pieces in this deal. The future still includes a great young team with loads of talent coming up. Better talent imo. The only real difference is you would have another seasoned vet who adds a style of play that is soarly missing from the current roster. But i digress, taking a team of record year players adding nothing and expecting them to do better just because they're a year older is dumb fantasy bs to me. I think the current roster is 1 more top 6 injury away from missing 500, after this year the morale will be down and the cost to keep players, make trades and pick up ufa's will increase because the gm sat on his hands hoarding assets and now with bursting pockets the rest of the league will simply walk begind you and pick up what falls out or over charge you because they know your so rich your assets are falling off. You only get so many roster spots, contracts and cap space. Its a gms job to manage them. Not waste them or stock pile them. If this team doesnt open its window now its wealth will become a burden.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Arh613</b></div><div>OOF :tearsofjoy

Didn't realize that Vancouver was so so so good and full of young talent.

Also can't wait to see the sabres try to fit Skinner, Thompson, Tuch, Quinn, Cozens, Peterka, Kulich, Savoie, Benson, Rosen, Ostlund, Kisakov, Poltapov, Neuchev, Whalberg all in the top 9 good call on that one.

Lastly, Petterson is a legitimate 2 way stud who scored over 100 points this past year. He is easily worth the 10+ AAV price tag IMO</div></div>

Umm are you missing my sarcasm?

I don't see where i say vancover is good ans full of talent.

Im not saying petterson isnt worth 10mil (although i would debate that) only that thry have a 1st line center @ 7 million. They don't "need" petterson and paying 3 1st round prospects that are coming along nicely and buffs next 2 1st seems kinda stupid to double up on 1st line centers and pick up 10mil in salary. Especially when you have actual wholes to fill in the line up. Petterson isnt getting selke votes, he's not known for his team driving leadership, he's average at face offs, and brings np physical presence. In short he's a 1st line center. Thats it. I'd rather have Aho at 9.5. i could probably get close to draisatl on the package being offered here if im looking for guys to break the bank on and spend some of my best assets.
Finally petterson has not gotten his team into the playoffs. No shame in that, most players can't make that big of a differenve for a whole team. Just pointing out he's not one of those players and really not what the sabres need. You wanna trade thompson and a 1st for petterson? I'd talk about that
