As for your choice in goalie targets, they really don't make much sense for Toronto's window. Wolf, Askarov, Wallstedt, Cossa, etc are all quite a few years away from taking over a starting job in the NHL. If Toronto is looking for someone to be a bonafide #1 right now than Carter Hart would be the best target for them. He gets criminally underrated due to playing for a terrible team. In reality he puts up very solid underlying numbers.</div></div>
So Thats kind of why I Signed Samsonov as well I think Wolf could actually be a very solid backup this season. I honestly think hes ready to play games I think hes just being held back in CGY because of all the goalies infront of him. The guys going to be 23 when the season starts i believe so hes not a 18 year old kid. The problem with Hart is the Salary. Hes already at 4.9M an an RFA, which means his QO has to be atleast 4.9M if he comes over and has a decent season youre essentially whereyu are now with Samsonov. a goalie whos had one good season on a contract year whos going to want 5M plus whereas with Wolf if he can step in this season and platoon with samsonov and have a good season they can likely resign the guy for less then 2M thats my reasoning on why im not going after carter hart

well there was more pieces involved . It would have likely have been Askarov+ Nashvilles first , for a higher 1st , Askarov would have likely been used as a sweetener to move up like 10 spots in the draft or whatever it was.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fangm</b></div><div>I think most NHL execs would value Woll higher than Wolf. Remember reading something where they polled one exec from each team about the most likely goalie to breakout next year and Woll had 75% of the votes and the same poll has Wolf as the most overrated goalie prospect.
So I think realistically you could do Woll for Wolf straight up.
Not saying that this is right/wrong. Just saying this seems to be the sentiment and it doesn't surprise me that most execs have no faith in a 6' goalie, not many that size that survive in the NHL</div></div>
I think you have to look at the overall picture with a statement like that though. and look at the opportunities available next season. Why would they say Wolf as the most likely to breakout next season when Calgary has Markstrom and Vladar both signed for another 2+ years . Wolf isnt going to get any games barring injures.
Where as Toronto the crease is essentially wide open right now.... Woll is going to be given the chance to play , possibly play alot unless they aquire another backup or a bonafide 65+ game goalie.
So I dont think you can take that and say Well woll is worth the same as Wolf. because theres no way they are. Wolf is WAY more valuable then Woll. by a long shot. Tbh I view Woll as a career backup with the potential to step in and play well in short spans with an injury to the starter. Wolf is more likely to be a legit bonafide starter.

Would Nylander take a 1 year deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fangm</b></div><div>I've thought about this as well. Like try to get him to take 1x$9M then re-up in a couple years when he sees that others have taken a discount. If he doesn't like their prices he can leave at that point and at 28 could still get 8*$10M somewhere else.</div></div>
I really dont even think its 9M if its a 1 year deal. If its a 1 year deal im thinking its going to be somewhere in the low 8's maybe even 8M.
I think if youre going 2-3 years itll be around 9M the final price. But only a 1 year deal I could see in the lower 8's , maybe 8.25M
The lower amount of years the lower the cap hit. So lets just do some assuming here. Toronto went to Nylander and Said we want to sign you long term. we want an 8 year deal. Nylander comes back and says ok if you want an 8 year deal its going to have to be 8x10-10.5M+. Team says. Thats too much so they start working backwards from
there.
Team comes back with a 6-7year deal can assume that would be in the 9.5-9.75M of Nylanders asking price.
Team comes back with a 4-5 year deal , gutta assume thats around 9.25M
Team------ 3 year deal around 9Mil.
Te----------2 year deal 8.5-8.75M
T-------------1 year deal 8-8.25M
Thats how Im looking at the breakdown for Nylanders contract and where I believe hes going to fall for however many years.

Well Askarov was close to be traded , He is somewhat close to wolfs calibre.. not quite but hes up there. and it was rumored he was on the trade block this draft for a higher 1st round pick i believe it was. It may be more realistic for them to go after an Askarov however I dont think they give up nearly as much for him and hes not as likely as a "for sure" hit as wolf probably is. thats probably why youre saying he cant be traded.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>That Philly trade is a trainwreck</div></div>
Do you want to elaborate? Constructive critisism?
It has been pointed out to me in a past thread Philly has passed on a low First and a second for Laughton.
Here Torontos getting a controllable asset for i believe three seasons on a team friendly deal and its only going to get more team friends 2 years from now. I see Liljgren as around a high second round pick. If he plays like he did last year and builds on it again I could see him fetching a low first. Not to Mention Liljgren is going to need a raise after this season. Are you ready to commit 4+ Mil to Liljgren if he has a decent season?
So my thoughts are. Liljgren(worth low 1st or second) , a first , They take on Jarnkrok, which isnt a horrible contract but at 2.1M with Knies, Domi and Bertuzzi supposed to be all playing on the wing I dont know if they want a 2.1M guy on the 4th line or scratched. I also think Jarnkrok may even get beat out for a job by someone like McMann or Steeves someone like that. which that Philly also retains 1.5M for the next three seasons... thats actually worth a decent amount on its own.
I honestly think that trade is worth it compared to value that has been thrown around for Laughton. Laughton may not score a ton of goals but hes a really good defensive Winger and can play centre as well. Also adding toughness.
I would love the leafs having the centres of Matthews, Tavares, Laughton, Kampf. or even Matthews , Domi, Laughton Kampf, or even Matthews , Tavares, Domi, Kampf and Laighton on the wing. They would create alot of combinations and depth that would be very hard to play against .
I understand it seems like alot , However look no further then the Tanner Jeannot trade, they also traded for him wih no control. needing a new contract thats probably going to pay him way to much money for what hes worth. My guess in the 4M area, Laughton is controllable for 3 more seasons. Look what these types of guys are commanding even if its just one team thats winning to always pay these rediculous prices all you need is one team to do it. They paid a 1st, 2nd ,3rd and a fifth AND Cal Foote for Jeannot. They also traded a first and Greco for Barclay Goodrow. These types of players do command a premium. Getting one thats already on a team friendly deal and chopping that in half , well thats gunna cost a decent amount. But the leafs need to just go for it. They have Knies, They have Hirvonen, they have a steeves , if they dont trade robertson. they have Woll, They have some decent prospects already in the system. and theyre keeping all of them almost with these trades. They need to stop using first round picks as ways to get rid of their bad signings that Dubas was doing and actually use them to improve the teams depth.
Not to mention they still have the Matthews, Marners and Nylanders, the thing I noticed about these Dyanstys is theyre to loyal to the players. for instance, Chicago. Toews and Kane should have been traded 3-4 seasons ago. I would have found a place they were willing to waive to and move them on Recouping some assets and first round picks. Toronto could use Matthews , Marner , Nylander etc and after 5-6 years still get a bunch of first round picks for them to help rebuild the team through the draft. If they wait til theyre almost retired to trade them with a ton of injures that wont work .

Wolf has actually played in the NHL but only the 1 game, regardless it may seem like a lot to give up for just that but Calgary has zero incentive to move him. Wolf is the #1 goalie prospect in the world and Woll isn't even top 10. He is one of 3 goalies to ever win the AHL goalie of the year award twice and the only one to do it in their first 2 years in the league.
The Waiver thing makes sense , theyre probably not going to want to carry three goalies , Perhaps they swap Robertson for Woll then.
1sts are always nice but teams acquiring 1sts are looking for "the future." Trading Wolf would be counterintuitive to that.</div></div>

Plus Nylander's agent would probably love to see Mathews, Marner, JT, Aho etc... pay checks, rather than signing first.</div></div>
I dont think hes gunna convince Nylander to take less money cause they have to buyout murray. He will only take less if Matthews and Marner take less. This Leafs team is in the perfect position to build a Dynasty. I dont get it. With all the extra brand advertisments they get in Toronto they should be ok to take a mil or two less on each contract to try to win.
FOr instance I know this wont happen but what if Matthews signs a 8 yearx 12.75M deal. Marner signs a 8year 12.6M deal , Nylander takes 8 year x 9.5M deal .. This team would be SET for the next 8 years and would dominate come the 3rd 4th 5th years of those contracts with the cap increase.... I know it wont happen but that is probably what it would take for toronto to finally win a cup.

I have been championing that for a while but nobody else seems to wanna agknowledge that possibility. To me that seems like the logical thing to do.
then once his 1 year deal expires Tavares comes off the books. you give that money to Nylander, you use the cap increase that year for Marner and bobs your uncle.... I really think this is the best way to go about it IMO. The only way that works though is if Matthews takes a team friendly deal because if the team has to give Matthews 14.5M Nylanders going to want 10-10.5 I think if Matthews leaves money on the table Nylander will be more likely to.

Danny clearly wants a ridiculously stupid offer for Laughton because he doesn’t want to sell him. They have reportedly turned down a 1st and 2nd for Laughton and other offers of 1sts so realistically they don’t want to sell him because that is absolutely an overpay already for him lol. I just think it’s funny that people on here try to trade him for nothing as if Danny will suddenly just completely drop his asking price for him</div></div>
I really dont think im super far off on Laughton, just because Briere is asking crazy amounts doesnt mean he will get it and he may just decide to lower his asking just a bit to get the deal done and build the first round picks for next season before teams start grabbing the ones that are going to be traded up.
The way I look at it is. Laughtons probably worth a first. and a decent prospect. my thoughts was Mcmann. Then robertson for Salary retention. If the leafs have to throw a third in there to get the deal done then I think they have to do it.
but if Briere wants even more then a first and a second for Laughton I highly doubt he will ever be traded. Laughton is a third line player... Im sure hes looking at the Tanner Jeannot trade and thinking theyre similar value... However I dont think Lightning do that trade again if they had the chance that was just rediculous.
Its Possible he ends up getting a first a second and a prospect for him . I just dont see him worth A first a second and a good prospect. and i think thats why he hasnt been traded , nobody else does either.

You can expect teams like

Anaheim
Chicago
Philly
and perhaps even teams like San Jose and Columbus to be on the No trade list. If hes going to choose to be moved, hes going to make sure its not career suicide. youd have to get alot more creative if you plan on moving a TJ Brodie. Thats WAYYYY to much for Zegras. I get hes a top talent , but youre probably looking at a total of 4 first round picks or value just to start plus Lily and all the other assets that are in there. you cant give up that much and expect the team to remain competitive . not only that but theyre retaining on brodie. The ducks i doubt will still do it , because if theyre just gunna get a bunch of late firsts theyre not gunna get back any talent near as good as zegras with all 4 of those.
Dumping Murray- so lets say RObertson is worth a 2nd or 3rd. is a third and a fourth enough to take on murray... I dont think so. Were gunna see a buyout here can almost guarentee it,
Samsonov- Thats WAY to much money for a 2 year contract for Samsonov. If theyre gunna give him that kind of money its gunna have to be a 4-5 year deal, a 2 year deal youre probably only looking in the 2.8-3M max range

The thing is is next season after this one Matthews contract goes up. , As well theyre more then likely going to end up having to buy out Matt Murray to keep the first round pick. By doing that. it adds 2,5M or so to the cap next season. They cant afford that 2.5M, plus matthews raise plus Nylander at 9.5 or 10M, theyre having trouble now with having to much allocated to 4 players.. could you immagine when Matthews prive goes up and so does nylander... it would essentially be a right off year if they do that. Kadri- The guys a 50 pt player every single year.. a decent 2nd line centre and a good third line centre. he goes off one year and gets 87 pts one season and now all the sudden again Calgary pays him way more then a 50 pt guys should get cause of 1 good season on the cup champs at 7Mil
Mangiapane- the guy is a 50 pt guy.. had one season where he scores 35 ... 50 pt guy they go give him almost 6 million...
The Flames are in a real bad spot signing all these contracts to players who had one good season and now theyre wondering why theyre not doing well... The players played well to get paid now theyre actually playing at the pace they can maintain.

I know right... Its like people think its trade or nothing.... If the leafs sign Nylander to a 1 year deal it will only be around 8Mil. That can easily be covered by the cap going up next year (along with Matthews raise) Then once Tavares comes off the books after Nylanders 1 year 8Mil. THEN they sign Nylander to his 8 year 10 mil deal.

...........By trading Nylander..... Moving 6.9 off the books and adding 6.25 or 4.9 is actually saving the leafs money, i shouldnt have to explain that to you. Once murray gets bought out the overages currently will be taken care of and with Muzzin on LTIR the leafs will still have positive cap space after those two moves
