I don't have a problem with this one. A shade pricey but quality UFAs are. He's relatively young and the term isn't bad either.

Calgary Flames signed James Neal (5 Years / $5,750,000 AAV)
A bit of an overpay for a player who is likely to decline in production. (Can be said for all UFAs I guess) Calgary can be happy for 2 to 3 years though. Don't hate this move, it will improve the Flames. I think they have done some good things this off season. Better team next year.

Thread:
(BUF / STL) - Thompson, Berglund, Sobotka for O'Reilly
Reviewing this off season Boterill crushed it. And my thoughts have changed to give Buffalo the Win on this one. Goals are our most needed thing (along with a laundry list of others...lol). Just on the existing "now" players (Berglund + Sobotka = 28 goals) vs (O'Reilly 24 goals) So I think it's actually close just on this but still STL win based on money we're paying.
Now add in the future of Thompson and the draft picks. Clear Buffalo win, but not for years. Which is OK in my book.
Our defense is much better now and in the future too. (Dahlin plus this years D heavy draft)
We had the worst goaltending in the league last year. Sub 0.900 save percentage. I'd estimate a 0.920 average for 2019 with upgraded tenders and D.
We'll see how it all pans out but I give BOTS a 9 out of 10 in the off season (assuming Reinhart gets signed reasonable and long term).
Prediction: Challenging for playoff spot.

(BUF / STL) - Thompson, Berglund, Sobotka for O'Reilly
Not completely loving this. This is hard for me because I sort of have a hockey crush on O'Reilly. I love everything about his game. He brings a lot more than just his points. Coaches dream player.
Looks like we got some spare and decining parts. A young prospect center with potential (maybe). Not impressed with his stats. (In fairness I don't know any of these players well) The sum of all this is less than O'Reilly. Blues win by a hair in the short term.
The gamble is on the bag of magic beans that are the late 1st and 2nd rounders. If either of these players pay off the Sabres win. Only time will tell.
For now it's even-ish, I think looking back in 4 years you'll see the Sabres got the better end of this.

Buffalo Sabres signed Scott Wilson (2 Years / $1,050,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>IceDragon</b></div><div>Wilson was limited to the third and fourth lines with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Opportunities were limited. I hope Wilson can create opportunities with the Sabres.
The Sabres have not made any significant free agent signings beyond goaltenders.</div></div>
I think Botterill's report card for today is like an 8. The goaltender thing was massive. I would like to have seen him pick up a short term scorer on left wing. For example Vaneck like the Red Wings just did. Something like that might even be good for a draft pick at the trade deadline.
GMTM would have got a overpaid nearly washed up UFA that we'll end up buying out.

Good point but if they get up against the cap, could they not trade for a small fortune in draft picks and prospects? Having too many elite players is a good problem to have IMO. Yep, a bit pricey but that's the UFA market.

Leafs win the lottery here. They are going to have no problem scoring goals. If they fix a suspect at times defence corps go ahead and plan the parade. Massive great news for Toronto. Traveres makes the team better.....period.

Great value signing. Glad they kept him. Very solid hockey player. Not going to solve our gap in scoring from the left wing. 3rd or 4th line winger with potential. Defensively responsible.

Secretly was hoping Buffalo would pick him up to play one last year with Pommenville. Good signing by the Wings, has a few miles in him but will rack up points regardless. He could go at trade deadline for a draft pick too as a rental.

Great signing. Ullmark and Hutton will push each other and be a great tandem. Show me a great goaltender and I'll show you a great coach. With the upgrade in Goal and Defence this year, I'm optimistic for a playoff spot or very close. Just need about 20-50 more goals out of the teams offensive numbers. Left wing needs improvement.

(PIT / BUF) - 2019 4th for Sheary, Hunwick
Ok, for both teams. For Sabres you can see these guys are place holders as the young guns develop in the AHL. In two years the contracts are up and maybe we'll see "bust for now" Nylander and the insane amount of D prospects we now have replace them. I think it allows success in AHL and even improves the Sabres a little. We gave up next to nothing to get them. Pittsburgh wins because they offload middle of the road players on high for there value contracts. They can get a good UFA for 5mil if they want or sign RFA.
BOTs did good on this one. I'd think maybe either of the newly acquired players may be worth a 3 to 4th rounder down the road at trade deadline time if need be

Winners and losers of the 1st round
Sabres won the first round with Dahlin, but with the first pick, it's kind of hard not too........I love Samuelsson as our second round pick too. Easily mid to high first rounder, I can see the Sabres getting him into the AHL and out of College sooner than later
I think DET and NYI also made out like bandits....

Sabres don't want him and no did anyone else. Why pay 4M for an average at best goalie? We gave up a lot to get him, it's a shame he didn't work out but then again neither did GMTM and that's why he gone.

2018-2019: Ryan O'Reilly
Please don't trade O'Reilly unless it's a VERY clear win for the Sabres. The guys does everything. Guys like that can't be replaced easily and that's why other teams have interest. BOT's would have to see a young NHL player or a prospect, a high draft pick, and maybe something else on top of that. (If Carolina, Jeff Skinner and a 1st or 2nd rounder and a prospect sounds about right)

2018-2019: Defensemen
All UFAs can go. First pair: 1) Risto 2) Scandella. Second pair:3) Dahlin 4) Bogosian Third Pair: 5) McCabe 6) Guhle 7) Best of the Rest (and the pipeline is fully stocked now!!!)
If we can get a good year (healthy) out of Bogo maybe we can pick up and asset or 1st round pick (wishful) in a trade. Same goes for Scandella, think he's great but if others develop to fill the gap we can build the team in a trade. BOTs is smart, build you're team around the best centerman (check), defense (check) and goaltending (not even close at the moment). Wingers are the easiest position to get in trades, so I'm not worried.
Next order of business...........Goaltending.

How Good Will The Sabres Be This Year?
We need improvement in EVERY SINGLE AREA. It depends on what BOTs does in the off season. If we make the playoffs we've overachieved as the pipeline isn't fully ready yet. I'm hopeful for some improvement and I think we'll be ahead of Ottawa, Coyotes, Carolina, Montreal, Detroit, Vancouver.

Robin Lehner not receiving a qualifying offer
After the 2018 draft I think within a short period we could have one on the best 'D' corps in the league. Never a huge fan of Lehner but if we don't have excellent goaltending even elite D will look weak. We need at least an above average goalie,OR its basement time again.

(ARI / BUF) - Fasching for Hickey, Sislo
Fasching was not a fit for Buffalo, good player but not what we need right now. Hickey is a gamble with unknown upside, time will tell. Sislo will help our AHL team win, a culture BOTs desperately wants in Rochester before prospects come to the NHL.

All things considered, looks like Carolina paid a prospect for an upgrade in D (Very good D with upside vs Elite D). Fair trade, good value for both I think, time will tell but at the moment, I'm giving this one to Carolina for the win.

(WSH / COL) - 2018 2nd round pick for Grubauer, Orpik
Edge to Washington as they are good in goal. Grubauer too good to be a #2. Washington taking advantage of there depth here. Orpik is simply a salary dump so now they can retain #1 Carlson. The second rounder likely top 6 F, top 4 D over time or likely the #1 goalie in 2019 draft. Wish, Grubauer ended up in Buffalo but our 1st second rounder would have been too high a price to pay.
