(OTT/VAN) - 3rd for Hamonic
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Danny12357</b></div><div>What makes this funnier is that I was texting a friend about how this made no sense for Ottawa as it is, but even less when it's likely Dermott moves for similar value. I mean why not take a flier on a younger D man for half the money and hope for some upside. Then Vancouver reveals the master stroke of swapping Hamonic for Dermott at essentially no net cost, while also saving $1.5M on the cap next year.
It kind of reminds me of the deal where San Jose flipped Hoffman back to the east. Vancouver just made it very obvious how bad this deal was for Ottawa within minutes.</div></div>
Yeah, this is a weird one. Those of you who are suggesting that Ottawa would have been better off to trade the pick for Dermott instead of Hamonic are assuming that they had the opportunity to do that. I think GMs have their favourite trading partners and probably don’t call every other GM in the league before they make a deal. Dorion may not have known that Dermott was available for a mid-3rd-rounder.
A couple of other pieces of trivia around this that some of you might find mildly entertaining:
1) Vancouver got back their own 2022 third-round pick from Ottawa, but the pick they sent to Toronto isn’t the same 2022 third-round pick. It’s Winnipeg’s. Based on today’s standings, that would be exactly one pick after Vancouver’s, so if that holds, not only did Vancouver exchange Hamonic for Dermott, they also moved up one spot in the draft.
2) Both of these picks were traded for Nate Schmidt at different times. Vancouver traded their pick to Vegas to get Schmidt, then a year later flipped him to Winnipeg for their pick. Since these picks are going to be pretty close to equal, they got a year of Schmidt for nothing (other than his salary).

Huge W for the Flyers
Ristolainen is an Elite defensemen who is incredible in his own end. Suprised he didn’t get 10M+

Instantly becomes one of the worst contracts in the league. He's a 3rd pairing defender at best.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Jake Muzzin (4 Years / $5,625,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>his salary was already set. It had nothing to do with the trade deadline. It was leaked out days ago that the deal was done.
Where do you come up with this stuff.</div></div>
It had to do with tagging space. Teams are only allowed to have so much of next season's cap you can allocate before and during the current season.
Signing Muzzing before the deadline would have limited potential deals with term because it would have reduced the tagging space, so they were waiting to sign Muzzin until they were sure they were not needing that tagging space in any deadline trades

Good contract. Not too long and exactly at market value. Sounds like he can be exposed to seattle too, so no debilitating NTC. Sounds like it is very front loaded so if there is a worst case scenario it will be easier to move.
Some tidy work!

Just about right for the aging curve. Muzzin helps in both ends and this is easily less than what he'd get in the open market.

I don't see lottery protections in the conditions... IMAGINE both Toronto and Carolina miss the playoffs and both picks win lottery spots haha.

Honestly probably perfect term and AAV. Maybe a year longer than it should be, but it's a solid deal.

AAV is fine. Term is awful with the style he plays. Not too mention, what happens to Schwartz after next year? What does Dunn sign for? Petro? Parayko?
Only benefit is that I see Steen being bought out and Allen traded. Perron likely taken by Seattle.

New York Rangers signed Brady Skjei (6 Years / $5,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Danny12357</b></div><div>For Skjei, I don't think this is really an overpay. He makes more money than some guys who are better D, but in terms of CH% he makes less than any of Rielly, Lindholm, Parayako, Hamilton, Jones, Orlov, Ristolinen or Slaavin. Which is fair because I think he is under this group. The dollars make it look like he got similar money, but I think the cap has just gotten to a point where $5M is now going to be more normal.
The Wilson contract is too high. They basically bumped him up into another tier of player. They are banking on him being more Brad Marchand than Boone Jenner.
I don't mind giving a guy a little extra money because you like his intangibles, or physicality, but do so by paying him at the higher end of guys he compares with, not by assuming that his physicality puts him in a higher end group.
A good comparable would have been Brandon Gallagher. With a similar CH%, and adjusting for 1 less year, you probably get Wilson valued at somewhere in the low 4's.
When you buy on a guy with upside, you do so because you are hoping the deal ends up looking like a steal. With Wilson, he would essentially need to double his production, and for that to become his new normal in order to ever feel like you bought low. That doesn't make it overly likely he becomes a bargain.</div></div>
It was more of a joke. Both player got overpaid slightly. It’s jusy more understandable to over pay a young dman
