1. The difference between juniors and college is huge.
2. The 'smallish' dmen that have put up offense like this are only guys like Quinn, Makar, Fox...(guys like Schultz, Krug, Benning, Butcher were significant step behind in production)

I wouldnt be so sure, Bahl could come in and replace Cole on the cheap for next season and you get a draft pick to try and add a player for that atrocious prospect pool of yours, all at the cost of a bottom 6er

i mean, technically i think it did? I don't know if I'd necessarily want to be paying KK $4.8M over the next 5 years to put up 30 points a season

I think he's probably worth that cap hit though, seems to develop into a decent two way forward with 2nd line upside.
And that term isn't long enough to be of an issue for the Devils at 4m aav.

Devils contender
If I were the Buffalo GM, I would make that trade.
Boqvist is not a great prospect, but the Sabres will most likely not offer Hagg a contract.
Just curious, from what I can determine, while Hagg was a top 4 PK D-Man, he played protected minutes for PHI.
He had the highest OZ% of all Defensemen and only Morin had a lower TOI than he.
I would think a fifth would be about the correct value.
IMO a trade as this would have made the Ristolainen trade a great return, first, second, fifth and a prospect

Jack Hughes should not be a 1C anywhere in NHL unless the Devils want to continue to embarrass themselves. He is Nail Yakupov 2.0.
Devils could save some money on those RFAs and go for a 1C like Zibanejad, Hertl, Barkov, Strome. Pay Hughes $2-3 million, use the $2.3 million cap space and $4.5 million from Malkin to sign Hertl to 7 x $8.5 million. Move out Bratt, Zacha, Tatar, and Severson and add a proven goal-scorer like Kessel or Rust and an a**-kicker for the bottom pair.
Devils are still 2-3 years from becoming a playoff team.</div></div>

Really??? ... a 2023 first, third and a NHL player/ replacement for Wood? I love the guy, but he's a bottom six. Even with some concerns about getting smaller/softer up front, I think Fitzgerald would do this.

Zacha making that level of money is INSANE. He would get traded before ever seeing that money from the Devils.
Reilly Walsh isn't even an NHLer yet let alone making $2m. Same for Bahl.
Sharangovich isn't jumping two $6m in two years. I'm already expecting it to be a comparable to Bratt's three year deal.
Also, similar to Zacha, Wood should be traded before he would ever make that much as a 4th liner. He's going to be Clarkson 2.0 for someone else.

What to do
I'd take that Wheeler deal all day, but retain half his cap hit to immediately flip him elsewhere for more assets, he has a ton of value at 4.125 million x 3 yrs. Eating that salary for the following three seasons is definitely worth it if the return is Stanley, WPG 1st and whatever else you get for that flip (another 1st rd pick? a highly touted prospect? opportunities are endless)

In any other circumstance I’d agree with you. Considering teams are aware we likely won’t/can’t protect him, whoever ends up trading for him won’t have to send back equal value for that reason. It’s either the Wild trade him for less than he’s worth or the Wild lose him to Seattle and then Seattle likely will send him off somewhere for what he’s worth. It’s a sucky situation but its the truth. I’d agree we could probably keep the 2nd round pick though, I’m just trying to make objectively fair deals.
