Kane's made his money.
Only way Kane signs with Buffalo is if he thinks he can add to his legacy by leading his hometown team to glory. And if that's what he wants, it's not outlandish to think he might take a team-friendly contract to help provide the resources that will get him there.
If they're close to being a contender after this season (all it would take would be breakout seasons from two or three of their high-upside prospects), I could see them offering a front-loaded 5x6 to lure him home. He might find that hard to resist.

I think you're underpaying our RFAs slightly. PK tops out at 2x3M for me.
This is realistic, though.

I'd be willing to upgrade the 2023 2nd to BUF or PHI. If Zucker has an NTC, we can just agree to buy him out -- deal still looks good. I'm not confident that VGK accepts a Zucker trade, even at 50% retained. But it's not necessary.

Sure. Makes sense, I guess. I'm just not invested enough to spend time blocking Peterka and trying to find JVR a home. Kocnecny is the asset I want, and I'm okay with buying out JVR on day one if that's what it takes to make it happen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Buffalove</b></div><div>Was gonna say that this could be a trade the Sabres would actually consider for Konecny
But seeing as you’re a Sabres fan, that makes sense
Flyers fans like putting trades up on here where we get Konecny- and they get pick9 + +
And that’s just not happening
Not a fan of your Campbell or (especially) Pk Subban signings though</div></div>
P.K. Subban at 2x3M is as high as I'd go. I have heard that he's a fine 3rd RD and is really good in the room. If we sign his brother, it's a good story and it helps rehab the team as a destination. Pay him $4.5M salary in year one so the buyout is trivial in year two, if necessary.
As to Campbell, if we're going to sign any of the in-demand UFA goalies, we're going to have to give term. I don't think it's plausible to grossly overpay on a two-year contract. Levi/Portillo are not going to be ready for NHL full-time for at least two, more likely three years. But almost every contract is movable. As long as Cambpell doesn't fall off a cliff in years one and two, the contract can be given away for future considerations or maybe an asset. Structure it to pay salary early so its easy to buy out. I don't care if we have to pay a 2026 2nd round choice and a B prospect to move him at the end. Those assets are trivial if we're moving into a truly competitive window, which seems like a good chance.

According to the cap calculator here, the buyout cost is $4.3 for year one and $1.3 for year 2 with $3.7 in total salary paid. But even at the higher cap hit, Buffalo can absorb.

That's what I'm thinking. Don't need to crowd the roster with people who don't have a long-term upside.

Long Term Outlook with UFA signings through 2025
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BuFfaLOFaN</b></div><div>Campbell that long is a bad idea, blocks both Levi and Portillo.</div></div>
I disagree. After eleven consecutive years of suck, Buffalo fans have forgotten that competitive teams manage cap differently from tank jobs and rebuilders.
Good players won't sign unless you meet the market on salary and term. If you're limited to two years, you're only going to be able to sign marginal players (think Cody Eakin), not difference-makers.
Structure Campbell's contract so it's easy to buy out if you're looking for flexibility. Or trade him with retention if one of the young goalies pushes him out. Honestly, any term under five years is manageable unless he completely falls apart in year one or two. That's a calculated risk. Four years would be preferable.
Now $6.5 AAV? Seems a bit rich. You might get him at 4x6M or 5x5.5M. Unless he's a top ten goalie, trade him after year two for whatever you can get.

Not enough to absorb Mrazek's contract.
Mrazek + Liljegren for Buffalo's 2022 3rd. Move Muzzin or Brodie somewhere for mid-round picks and spend the $10M in cap savings on two cheaper vet D (similar to Giordano) to push yourselves over the top.

Even if we agree Lily is worth a late first, Sabres won't give you a first <strong>AND</strong> take $3.8M on Mrazek for two years.
I can't see any team taking Mrazek for less than your second plus a good prospect. In this trade, you keep your own assets and get another 2nd. You can sign a vet UFA (like Rutta) for cheap to help you on your win-now cup run.
You're not going to get a better deal anywhere else.

Another Trade Down Idea
Adding 37OA in makes it much more palatable for Buffalo. Three top forty picks instead of four is fine. I doubt there's a substantial drop-off on the Sabres' draft board between 32OA and 37OA, but there's probably quite a gap between 9OA and #1. Maybe even big enough to make it worth #16 and five slots at the end of the first round.
Buffalo might not take Wright, tho.

So BUF 1st + FLA 1st + Johnson for Barzal? That sounds quite reasonable to me.
