You don’t make trades based upon 2 year out potential resignings. Also, the age factor does matter. 32 vs 25. You say Tage is at his peak, so JT is going to be on the downward trend. But Buffalo should gift him to Tor all in the name of leadership for a declining player? Your premise doesn’t make any sense, it’s a bad deal for Buffalo</div></div>
You do make trade based upon 2 years out of a potential resigning, it' actually very common in the modern NHL, it's called a rental, and at his current age, like fleury Tavares would likely resign with Buffalo not wanting to uproot his family near the end of his career.

Sorry, that's my mistake. By the end of the contract, you could sign JT for less because of the AGE factor so what are you still complaining about?

Because both goal totals are star number, yes Tage may have scored 22% more goals than Tavares but in the end an 11 goal difference can be made up by any one of Buffalo's current up and coming prospects like Jack Quinn so it's not like Buffalo is losing every bit of offensive talent that it has.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lsendel3</b></div><div>JT isn’t good defensively. He’s neutral at best. And Tage isn’t terrible at it, he’s just mildly bad. So the impact JT has on the ice defensively doesn’t overtake the fact that Tage is vastly superior offensively. Now the leadership aspect. Do you really think that JT is gonna be happy being traded? Will be maintain being this obviously best leader in the NHL (that can’t push his team when needed)? Or will he become a problem because he forced his way to only TOR, and now is in a place he doesn’t want to be?
How about contract length? Does that matter to you? What about age? What about Tage growing with the young core together and becoming leaders themselves?
Literally makes zero sense and you trying to push it because “leadership” is laughable. Keep going if you want, this is terrible, you know it is, I’m done here.</div></div>
Toronto has a core of player currently in their prime and a little bit past that he can learn from. Tage is theoretically in his prime right now being 25 so he won't get much better both have 7 years left on their deals. and why are you so set on the fact that this is a terrible deal when you've only looked at the Thompson and Tavares aspect, the value rounds itself out in the end, this is only a bad deal to you because you see Tavares as an aging hasbeen and Tage Thompson as a gift from the gods. And the point of this deal is for Toronto to get out of the cap hole while not losing talent. and Buffalo still gets a valuable piece in Tavares because we both know he's worth far more than nothing

Tage put up 47 goals this year, JT scored 36, The offense isn't all towards Tage, and Tage only had 3 more assists than johnny with 47. So Tage isn't that much better offensively than Tavares. And Tavares is still better on the defensive side of the puck.

I never said leadership was the only thing that mattered, I did state that JT can still contribute great offensive numbers and is a better defensive player. but with leadership factoring as well, this deal becomes a lot less lopsided then you're assuming it to be

They don't have a veteran that can honestly contribute as well as be a leader in the locker room. Jeff Skinner may be a veteran with the ability to score but he's not a leader.

Well I mean Buffalo can't make the playoffs without the veteran leadership so I'd take a trip to the playoffs with veteran leadership over golfing in april without it and day.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lsendel3</b></div><div>No it doesn’t at all. Tage is signed for 7 years. You held salary for 2 on JT. Tage is better than JT. The prospect is irrelevant (not even a prospect at age 25). The held salary makes it JT at Tages cap hit. So Buffalo gets the worse, older player for 2 years and then Tor gets the value contract for 5 years after, all to move up to late first rounder from a second (I know years are different). The trade is a joke</div></div>
I think you're missing the veteran leadership that JT would bring to the sabres, something they've lacked and needed for the last 5 years

Sabres have absolutely zero reason to trade tage at all.</div></div>
They do if the value is there, the sabres have been looking for a veteran who can lead the team with his words and with his ability to play the game. Tavares being of course that veteran leader can still put up 25-35 goals per year and he has better defensive numbers than Tage.

Unless an eastern conference team made an offer that would benefit the sabres. Their cap situation would remain more or less the same in this deal and they would be getting veteran leadership as well as 25-35 goals per year from john tavares. not as much of an offensive threat as thompson but when you consider the other aspects of their games this deal makes a lot more sense than what it does a first glance.
