I agree. No clue how people live this guy. He’s done nothing. He’s dangerously close to having negative value. People saying he’ll play well w Sid? Yeah like Kessel? Zucker? Lol Sid is amazing but stop using him as a crutch for crap players

How Does The General Hockey Community View Jack Johnson
if he was a 3rd pairing guy making 1.5 million a year no one would complain.
But when ever someone hurts he's always the guy who gets moved. He got shafted on the RHD out of position for almost a full season because no one else could do it.
He got moved up to 1st pairing for 1/2 a year because who else was there?
He had no business in either spot but there were no other options. If you took your average 3rd pairing guy and played him 1st pairing your results wouldn't be much different. In the beginning of the year when he played his natural LHD role in a 3rd pairing situation. There was not a whole lot to complain about.
Is JJ a bad defense man, he's not a 1st pairing guy that's for sure. Is he awful. He's clearly got NHL talent.
There is no real answer to this question because if you say a guy is good, you expect him to be 1st pairing. But not all "good" defense men are 1st pairing guys. You just have to know your role and fill it.
If you think Riikola would have been any better in 1st pairing minutes you are kidding yourself.
He's a 3rd pairing LHD. It is what it is. Does that make you good or bad? depends where you are forced to play.

What’d you guys think of Jack Johnson? Is he a good defenseman?</div></div>
I’m not a Pens fan but I really don’t understand the hate Jack Johnson gets. It’s been blown way out of proportion by typical fans like you making him the scapegoat. In his prime, he was an all star defenseman who was selected to represent USA at the Olympics and World Cup. He may not be the same player he was but he is still damm effective. He leads all Penguins defensemen in hits & blocks. You’ve gotta keep in mind he plays with Letang & Schultz whom are both fully offensive minded defensemen yet have no idea how to play without the puck. That’s why he concedes so many shots. Honestly, Johnson’s contract isn’t even that bad. There are many other teams that have way worse players making way more, like Mitch Marner of Toronto.

Looking At Possible Jack Johnson Replacements
Do you think that Johnson plays bad because:
He spends 42% of his time with Letang, who constantly makes bad decisions and is out of place defensively leaving Johnson hanging out to dry? (Shot at Letang)
He spends 19% of his time with Marino who lacks experience and chases, putting himself out of position defensively leaving Johnson hanging out to dry? (Not a shot at Marino)
He spends 12% of his time with Schultz who tries to create offense and is often out of position defensively leaving Johnson hanging out to dry? (Similar shot as Letang, just lesser)
Like the 3-on-1 that Johnson faced the other day and everyone blamed Johnson for the goal?
I'm not saying that he is good, but the "it's Johnson's fault" thing has jumped the shark.

Riikola is not better than Jack Johnson. Offensively sure but I don't see Riikola going on the penalty kill any time soon. There's a reason why Sullivan only plays him 13 minutes a night. Also the team is WINNING with JJ playing almost 20 minutes a night so why are we getting rid of him now while our defense is 7th best in the league in expected goals for.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PenGoater99</b></div><div>Johnson has not been good this year, his offensive impact is bad and he's average at best defensively.
+/- is useless, his corsi stats are not that good either, and zone starts are irrelevant.
He doesn't pass the eye test, he isn't the best PK'er on the team.
Physicality doesn't matter if you're a complete liability to the team.
He doesn't need to be a leader for the younger d-men when Letang and Dumoulin are on the team.
You calling someone else dumb is pretty funny.</div></div>
JJ doesn't pass the eye test because every time Letang coughs the puck up and lets the other team score they put the camera on JJ as if it's his fault.
Honestly, his play this year has been solid. I don't know who could complain about it. Especially after last year where they left him out to dry on his off side.
Just hush up and cut the guy some slack. He get's it enough from the crooked ass media who wouldn't dare put that camera on Letang because it doesn't fit the narrative.
I'm not saying I keep JJ on this team long term. I don't. He does have a hard time clearing the zone. But he has played well in his own end if you think he makes mistakes with the puck, lets sit down and have a real long conversation about Letang back there.
One is quick to jump on Jack and his whooping 14 give aways this year. But not say a word about Letang and his 53!!!!!
JJ is the least of the problems back there. To be honest, it's getting to the point that I would rather move Letang than JJ.

Staying a contender next year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mhockey91</b></div><div>I still think pens need / will move johnson. That gives them so much cap to add another impact player</div></div>
Depends on what the trade looks like. His numbers this year are actually perfectly fine for a 6th man, mind you that may be the John marino effect. There’s a couple things to consider, pens already will have a ton of space to work with so they may not want to take a hit to the picks/prospects just to clear space. I think there’s potential for JJ to actually play better over the next year or so before he ages out, it’s kinda sad but because his parents took all his money until he came here and got the big check he literally couldn’t pay for a personal trainer, he’s got one now and I honestly think all that offseason stuff (trainers, dietician, etc) might be a bug part of why he’s playing better now.
He’s starting 58% in his own zone and has a 49% Corsica, and is a +8. I think by the end of the season way may have a player who is not trash at all, but maybe just overpaid by a million/million and a half

Johnson-less Pens
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DonkeyLips</b></div><div>Let me guess. All you look at is corsi. Try watching and learning the game. Then you might know what you are seeing.</div></div>
Hell his stats are better. At this point last year he was a -7, this year he is a +4. Hell he was a minus all year last year and never was a plus, though he went from a -13 to a -4 by the end of the year, but never was a plus for the season at any point.
His corsi last year never was better than 46%. It’s 48% this year. At this time last year it was 35%. Fenwick was about the same.
Weird playing with vets like Letang, Schultz, Maatta, Oleksiak last year, but somehow playing with a rookie makes him better? Lol and i don’t get this being sheltered nonsense these other pens fans that have a hard on to pay the moon to trade him keep claiming. The guy spends most of his time on the P.K. and has a defensive zone start of 60% lol. You’d think if they were to shelter a guy, they wouldn’t put him in the most high risk situations ?♂️. It’s pretty much a waste of your time trying to talk sense into some of these fans lol

The only reasonable JJ option
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DonkeyLips</b></div><div>Don't forget that he is playing well for a 3rd pair dman. I just don't get the vitriol for the guy. Most pens fans are so hard-on for him failing and moving him at any cost. They must not actually watch the games.</div></div>
Because once you become the whipping boy the only way to become loved in the pens fanbase is to be traded.
Fleury was the whipping boy and Murray was the favorite. Fleury goes to Vegas and is suddenly a hero that everyone misses in Pittsburgh and Murray is now the worst goalie to ever play the game to most pens fans.
Maatta was the reason for every goal against even though he was a career +60 with the pens. He was also terrible cause he never scored, cause you know dmen are supposed to lead the league in scoring. Then he gets traded for Kahun, Kahun starts out slow and tons of people were complaining about that trade.
I could probably go on and on
