Sure trade for Keith just kill me
I think the speculation of Neal being part of the deal is bloggers and armchair GMs trying to find some way to make it seem more palatable - can't see Chicago taking on that cap. The LTIR thing is my "creation" based on some hints that Bob Stauffer has been tossing out on his show that Neal's play has fallen to "Robidas Island" levels. He didn't use that term directly but that was the implication. Not crazy either, IMO which is much better than a buyout, clearly.

I can almost see the wisdom of brining Keith in...almost. But he's just not the player he was and even placed into a softer-minute role I don't see how he isn't a net negative. Sigh.

Offseason based on Scott Powers recent Athletic article
Just to be clear, Edmonton sends a 2nd TO Chicago for the extra year of the 37year-old D-man who has fallen off a cliff statistically? They probably do but man that seems contrary to how those cap dumps are usually done.

That's why the title is Disappointing reality. As for Kassian, ya, I let myself breathe in some hope. It's passed now. ;-)

Potential sneaky good team
What’s the appeal, for Edmonton, in taking on Connolly’s $3.5M contract for three more years? He had 3 goals last year and looks to be crashing down that aging curve.

Thanks on the RNH estimate. This is one where I deviated the most from Evolving Hockey’s estimate. Shorter term gives Nuge a shot at another contract once HRR jumps back up.

Gillis goes Armageddon
Not going to be overly critical here but would point out that there was apparently a Benning for Brown trade on the table. May be able to make it happen without the extra team or picks.

Make Edmonton Great Agane
Don't think Vancouver makes that deal (nor are the Oilers likely to trade within the division). That said, a comparable deal to Toronto for Brown was apparently on the table at the deadline.
You didn't resign Puljujarvi or trade his rights? Unless you meant to include him in the Lucic trade. Can't see why Jersey trades away a 20 goal man on a value contract for Lucic and two seconds. Going to need to look at retaining salary if dealing him, I suspect.

Fixing the Chia Pet

NMCs don't necessarily flow with the traded player. The acquiring team has to agree to honour the clause. Some will (Dion Phaneuf, or M-A.Fleury for example) and some teams don't (P.K. Subban, who ironically was traded just prior to his NMC kicking in on his extension).

Fixing the Chia Pet
I am convinced that there is an alternative to a Lucic buyout and that is a trade. I get that he's radioactive right now but a lot of that is having to live up to a $6M contract/cap hit.
On July 1st he gets a $3M bonus. That leaves $16M over the remaining 4 years of the contract. Still undesirable. Retain $2M and it almost becomes palatable. One of the (many) other mock GM plans had Lucic going to Columbus for Wennberg and, with $ retained, that isn't crazy. There may be other options available as well.

Realistic
Dealing Lucic involves him waiving. Let's say he's happy to get out of the spotlight and vitriol of Edmonton. You trade him after July 1st so the Oilers pay the $3M bonus. That leaves $16M over 4 years at a $6M Cap Hit. Not sure many teams are interested in that but should the Oilers retain $2M then you are getting Lucic at $2M for 4 years (though with a $4M Cap Hit) which, if there's a sweetener added - pick, prospect or bad contract going the other way - it can probably be done.

Edmonton Re-Tool 30
Interesting that all the comments to date are about dealing Puljuarvi and not dumping Lucic or signing Karlsson. Lucic's contract is tradable, particularly after July 1st bonus is paid. Not sure Columbus will be the place that wants him but if they get knocked out by Wilson and the Caps in the first round, they may want to toughen up. Interesting ideas.

Oiler Roster, tweaked not wrecked
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dylan1995</b></div><div>Would love that! Except I think Russell has played better then sekera honestly</div></div>
I am not as hard on Russell as most but his contract structure makes a buyout this year more valuable.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Are you really optimistic that New York area boy, Carlson, is going to leave the cozy Metro division for Edmonton?</div></div>
Not sure actually but if you think the need for a high-end RHD is a big need for the Oilers, and I do, then he's the best/only one available just for $$. I went conservative on the salary cap, could be as high as $82M, and as much as everyone is upset with the Lucic contract - the point of the exercise is to show that there is still some ability to add.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mitch11</b></div><div>What about Caggiula, RNH and Yamamoto (or Slepyshev) as a second line? My only concern is: Klefbom on the bottom line?</div></div>
I suspect whoever the coach is that all forwards will be in flux. Not sure what the Oilers will do with Caggiula or Slepyshev. Can see Slepyshev as a top 9 but increasingly see Caggs as a bottom of the line-up player at this point. As for Klefbom, he certainly could play higher up the line-up.
