Kessel Trade w/ Calgary - Pittsburgh Side
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ekpaul87</b></div><div>I understand wanting to keep Maatta, but then there's not a spot in the lineup for either Oleksiak or Andersson, and Ruhwedel, not to mention Riikola if he's able to make the jump. Hard to carry 8-9 NHL dmen for very long, and I figured Maatta had the most trade value. His lack of footspeed also concerns me a bit.
For the free agents, I really just went with JVR to show that a high contract value could fit. Theoretically, it could be Grabner, JVR, even Tavares at $10M would fit if he wanted to look at that.</div></div>
Anderson and Rikola are both waiver exempt, so moving them up and down is easy. Maatta-Oleksiak is a solid defensive 3rd pair and both are capable of joining the rush. Ruhwedel is a perfect #7D that could fill in for a game or two.
I don't blame Maatta for all the times he gets burnt. The Penguins played pretty terrible defense all year. If the forwards back check and cover the points, you don't see it as a problem.

I like the deal as a Pens fan, but I think they keep Maatta and sign a less expensive free agent (Grabner?).

Actually it is about 44%. With Botterill doing the picking I think it will be closer to 60% (check out Dobberprospects to see how well he did last year).

Predicts 25% will play at least 200 games. Botterill will draft better than that.</div></div>
Here's another article breaking it down a little more just for added info

Odds are like 25% a 2nd round pick becomes a roster player. So playing the odds, you get a roster player. Beating the odds, you get two.

Vancouver deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jake_H</b></div><div>You really think that with the body of work Sprong has put together, he's a sure enough bet to score <strong>fifty points at even strength</strong> that we can trade a guy who just helped raise two banners? Less than forty guys scored that many points at evens last year and you think Sprong is a 100% lock for that? Because that's the only way you can even being to entertain the notion of trading Kessel, which is already bordering on impossible.</div></div>
I have him pegged for 20G/15A. It's not up to one person to replace a player. It's a team sport. The Penguins got barely any depth scoring, something that helped them win 2 Cups. Offense isn't the only way to win, either. You can also play defense and allow fewer goals than the other team, something the Penguins had problems with this past year.
I'm not crazy about trading Kessel, but he had a career year at age 30. He's not getting younger, and eats up a solid chunk of cap. If you plan on moving him before his contract ends, why not move him when you can get the most return for him.?

Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures
All of the draft picks required as compensation must be the club's own draft picks and must available in the nearest entry draft.
You'd only be able to sign Larkin at $6mil/5yrs and one of Mantha or AA to a max of $4mil/5yrs. Compensation for Larkin would be a 1st wnd 3rd. Compensation for Mantha or AA would be a 2nd.
Lower AAV and more years is also an option, but doubtful they would sign it.

Pens Retool - 2 trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>bjsherman66</b></div><div>Not bad trades but you're undervaluing guys. Going to need to add more than Simon to move Hunwick's salary if you want Bellemare. I think Montreal could do better, maybe add the Sens pick without retaining Benn's salary. Free agents are overpaid in my opinion, could offer less on one year deals.</div></div>
Hunwick isn't a bad player and really didnt have a terrible season. His 2.25mil cap hit is reasonable compared to other dmen on the block.
As it stands, the Pens are ahead in the Montreal deal. But it is close to value and the Canadiens need a true center. Brassard may only fill that 2C role, but his output is pretty close to Galchenyuk's. Habs get him cheap for a year and first shot at signing him to an extension. Sheary is a small skilled forward that can play with playmakers. Not your typical 3rd liner, but if used in the right capacity can put up points. He had an up and down year and still managed 18 goals. If you replace Benn with Schlemko, I would definitely add something to it.

Penguins are pretty set on RW.
What do you think of a Brassard and Sheary for Galchenyuk and Schlemko or Benn deal?

3 in 4 years
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pensfan89</b></div><div>. And Letang coming off his worst season in probably 10 years doesn’t really help his value either.

He had 51 points, the 3rd highest of his career, and missed 3 games all season. He was a bit of a liability defensively, but he did miss half a season. He's still easily a top 10 defenseman in the league.
Outsiders see 2 poor plays in the playoffs and think he's a total bust. Karlsson makes the same mistakes. Subban. Any offensive minded defenseman tries to do too much at times and gets burnt.

I don't see why the Penguins need a 3rd PP quarterback in Faulk. I'd prefer to see a two way defenseman or defensive defenseman on that 3rd pair.

A 5/6 D, a mid-6 undersize winger, and a late 1st round pick. It's going to take more than that to get Hanifin. They have the space to sign him, no rush to trade him.

Armchair GM - Save / Save As Roster
Small thing that I would find useful...
I know the tool saves unpublished teams, but if I could re-sign UFAs/RFAs and then save that as a base team so I didn't have to do it every time, it would be a major convenience. Then after making trades and signing other UFAs I could 'Save/Publish As...' a new team name.
Useful?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jake_H</b></div><div>Trading Kessel and scraps for random depth pieces and useless picks? One star. You can't blow a 90-point hole in the offense and expect Sprong and Virtanen to patch it.</div></div>
42 of Kessel's 92 points came on the powerplay. You can put Hal Gill out there and he'll pick up 15 powerplay points with that group. That leaves 50 points to replace and I think Sprong can reach that. You gain depth at D putting a 2nd pair guy in Hutton on the 3rd pair. You get out of a year of Hunwicks contract by trading for del Zotto. Virtanen would probably play 3rd line once you move one of Hagelin and Sheary for some more cap space and you have room to add a free agent or 2 for more depth scoring. The pick you use at the trade deadline to acquire a piece if you need it.

Yes, that 1.2mil for one year will be the reason they can't sign Tavares.
I don't think the Pens are giving up enough in the Carolina deal. Top 6 wing and a prospect with pedigree for a maybe 20 goal scorer, a backup goalie, a 4th liner, and a draft pick that should be in the bottom half of the 2nd round.

You're giving up A LOT for Hagelin. He takes up a lot of cap space on the Penguins and is really only a 3rd liner/PK specialist.

Penguins after draft deals
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikearky</b></div><div>The two trades with Calgary and Edmonton are utter junk. Why would they trade Hamiton, a younger player that is sought after and needed by most teams for a player who is a good player with other great players.
The Letang deal is ahead scratcher. What were tou thinking? You want the Oilers to take on Letangs contract and all you want in return is Klefbom(younger and cheaper) and the tenth pick in the draft. Not even close. I l Ile Letang but his contract, age and injury history are all problems.</div></div>
Calgary has 9 forwards signed for next year. They have no legitimate RWs. They deal from a surplus, defense, a player they don't use to their full potential.
The Oilers need a legit #1 defenseman before they waste any more of McDavid/Draisaitl prime years.
Everything I traded for has been discussed as being available.
