I am glad he turned things around and wish him the best of luck going forward, but no GM and it's right mind would equate him and Huberdeau. The latter had a bad start... on a team that wasn't built the right way. And yes, he is overpaid. Huberdeau is just better, there is no denying it.
That said, I am not sure I would trade for him given where we are with the rebuild.</div></div>
Drouin has more points this season. He is a biggest star

Anyways, the move to Utah is a game changer. You don't pay 1.3B for a team and then load it with dead contracts. Utah will be a force to recon with at the draft and on July 1 with their draft capital and cap room.

Clean Carey contract
I think we hold on to Carey's contract for the year: (1) we don't need the money now, (2) the value will be dramatically better on July 2nd 2025, when Carey virtually isn't owed anything anymore.

I don't even understand why we are discussing cap dumps and Montreal in the same sentence. We'll have *too much** cap room this year. Let's do ourselves a favour and dump our contracts in our own backyard.

I hope Calgary fans get what they hope for in Markstrom, but I hope NJ has nothing to do with this guy. I don't mean any disrespect, I just utterly hate that goaltender and see him as a curse.</div></div>
Got you, don't really think it makes sense either, especially when Allen is playing fine, but apparently NJ is still in on a goaltender, so it'd be smart to take advantage of that.
It's been a kind of a roller coaster with him in Calgary, at times reminding me of Mike Smith how my heart would skip a beat everytime he left the crease, but when he's solid, he's like SOLID.

we're not desperate to move lindholm and boston was always willing to pay a lot to get him.
if you think we're doing that deal under duress you're delusional. this isn't a must for us it's a want.
Boston on the other hand HAS to do something. Florida is taking the conference by the throat right now.

Markstrom

Perhaps a Murray Edwards directive to keep the playoff hopes alive. Ceci would have fit that billing, but perhaps not a good enough player for Conroy? Who knows.</div></div>
I agree, I'd have been happy with Ceci coming back to fill a spot for next year but apparently the Flames weren't. Same for me with RyJo, he'd be handy to have around next year. Today's rumor is NJ says they're willing to take Marky's full cap hit on now... After Calgary said yesterday they aren't going to trade him after all.
Then again I believe the reason Calgary has balked at taking on or retaining salary on contracts with term is because Conroy intends to be a buyer in free agency this summer and wants as much cap space available as possible. Sam Reinhart maybe?

Before yet another idiot chimes in with but you didn't get a 1st for Tanev... Calgary actually turned down at least 1 or 2 offers for Tanev that included a 1st but also expected them to take on a player with term who they didn't want. Speculation is the teams were edmonton and Colorado, the players were Codi Ceci and Ryan Johansen.</div></div>

If the Habs add a 1st the Canes probably do it. They have no interest in Allen, so unless they are getting paid to take him as a 4/5 goalie this year, they aren’t making a move for him.

I don’t think the guys up front are playing well enough anymore to warrant going all in on a goalie. When healthy through about December we were but our play has dropped off since then

For the first couple months we were playing elite hockey and getting sold by our goalies, injuries then torched us. But recently goaltending has been acceptable (not good), meanwhile the team is just playing much worse overall.
Losing McLeod was a massive hit, and the coach needs to go before anything</div></div>
Indeed.. I think Devils fans will feel disgruntled for the time being, but ultimately, it is in the best interests of the team to take the long view and get it right, instead of bowing to demands of young players like Brady Tkachuk or Jack Hughes or whoever (to give two examples around the NHL), to "make us win right now because I want to". They are early on in their growth period, sure, Hischier has been around for some years now, and Hughes for a couple, and they have some veterans, but they still have Holtz, Nemec, Mercer and others who have yet to grow to their potential. They also need to surround them with better youthful depth, as guys like Palat will not be all that useful forever at their cap hits.

I'm thinking Fitzgerald would have traded for Markstrom instead of letting the deal die, if he truly, truly felt it would mean the difference. Along with retaining a bit on Chris Tanev in exchange for a 4th round pick in the Calgary/Dallas deal, I also hear Toffoli is of interest to the Kings, and if Fitzy is thinking ahead to next year already, he may just strike a deal for a young player or two from Rob Blake to help with the coming years (Kaliyev?). I'm guessing he'll leave his goalie search for the off-season, when it is determined which UFA's are going to leave, how much exactly the cap will go up, all that. I wonder if he's also waiting to do a quick re-tool of sorts with a new head coach at the helm going into next season..</div></div>
