Ovi Wants Out
Kessel is arguably the better player, especially at this point in time, at a MUCH better cap hit. Even with your retention ... I just don't like Ovy. He looks fat and out of shape at the END of the season let alone the beginning. He just doesn't seem like a guy committed to winning on or off the ice to me.
Also you're 3C is a rookie whos NEVER played a nhl game and your 4C is likely retired. I'd put Ovy on the 3rd line for depth scoring, like we can do with Kessel ... but I don't see Ovy as guy who elevates the 3rd line.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Ess. Vegas will still have to put a NHL team on the ice this year. They have ton of picks so adding 3rd rounder or so is almost meaningless to them. I'll stick my opinion that Hagelin and his six goals is no way worth his 4m salary. If he is of such value, why do Pens fans keep on trading him?
Pouilet is working himself to a suspect not prospect. Lot of teams of AHL prospects too, I just don't think there is value in trading for one.
Yes, I saw Kessel in Toronto. Don't be fooled by his goal production. For long stretches especially late in his Leaf career his was a poor NHL player. No effect in defensive zone (when he was there). Just pass the puck to me.
I'm saying Phil is in the ideal spot for in Pittsburg. He'll never be better. Trading him to a non contender and without winners prodding him, his production and overall play will decline drasticallyIMO
Trochek was just signed to nice deal with Florida and you want an NHL Dman a better prospect in McCann than Pouilet. I just don't think teams, I wouldn't would trade for Phil. He played at his level with the Pens and he when his production declines he might turn to his sulking , disinterested ways as he did with the Leafs.</div></div>
Vegas is getting 2 NHL forwards to put a team on the ice. They've been saying they need to build through the draft. A 26y old 4th line player from another team isn't going to make or break them. If they're looking at their team this year when trading then they have no future. A 3rd round pick has the potential to be anything from a bust to a super star player. It's an asset. They traded Methot for 3rd and prospect that's projected not to make the NHL. That 3rd meant something.
Hagelin is being shopped because he has value but is expendable when we have 12 forwards who have won Stanley Cups. You do realize CHI traded Panarin, Hjalmarsson, Shaw, Ladd, Versteeg, Saad, Leddy, Byfuglien ... Were all those players bad? No. but when you look at the rooster he's the obvious man to trade because of his age, salary, and the fact that PIT is very deep at that position. Do you trade Rust, who's on a entry level deal or Hagelin who's older and making more? His injuries this past year showed us that he is expendable on this roster and other players could fill his role. His value at the deadline is probably two 2nd rd picks, or a 2nd and a 3rd ... at least in most years. This draft is supposed to be pretty deep, but Vegas has the Cap space to retain salary, asking for more in picks and potential for cap hits, and not hurt the fact that they will not make the playoffs for 3-5 yrs minimum. They have a bunch of quality forwards (many UFAs they might not be able to move), and a ton of defense man. How many Stanely Cup champions do they have? You might not see the value in that, but many teams do. Especially at the deadline.
"...especially late in his Leaf career ..." Toronto had who playing with him? That teams was crap from the net out. FLA is better than TOR was for all those years. Huberdeau, Barkov, and Ekblad would have been considered SUPERstars in TOR 3 years ago. He was their only hope of offense on that team, and even with taking games off he was more offense for his teams than any other player in the league. I'd be disinterested in playing with the Leafs during his time ... look at your tag. "longtimeLeafsufferer" ... you just watched the team. He was on the team, listening to fans ***** about his play (putting up 60-85pt a season) when the entire team sucked. He could give 120% every single night and those teams would still lose because they stunk. Some marriages end in divorce ... especially when there is no support. The city and the Leafs organization deserves at least half the blame for Kessel's short comings.
You're complaining about the performance of a guy who was playing for nothing. In the regular season many stars don't give it their all, because the games really don't matter. Crosby and Malkin used to score 120 pts, have 4 pt nights every other game, and now they save it for the playoffs ... and win cups. They take time off during the regular season because they just need to make the playoffs.
FLA is on the verge of the playoffs. Adding Kessel and signing a guy like Iginla might be all they need. TOR needed to bomb year after year to build through the draft ... which takes me back to the my point about Haula/Hagelin and Vegas and building through the draft ...
What would the counteroffers be?

If you want to shop Pouliot (although you could opt to keep developing him in AHL rather than give him for nothing), you could do Sheary + Pouliot for Lowry + Dano + 2019 2nd.</div></div>
I agree with this assessment, though I'd probably say Sheary + Pouliot for Lowry, Dano + 3rd or 4th ... either way, as PIT fan I do that deal.
I recommended similar deals for those same 2 players. Dano might replace Sheary (plays all foward positions), and Lowry certainly fills the 3C, PK, with physicality need, and adds net front on a PP.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Kessel might score more points but he it is questionable if he would be the best player in the deal, especially when removed from Pittsburg. Seem like a big overpayment in talent and cap to for one NHLer. Pouilet despite all the trades on this site is not an NHLer.
Haula is better and cheaper than Hagelin, so why do we get on seeing these Hagelin deals? If Jets likes Maatta long term, the Jets trade seems very reasonable.</div></div>
So you don't know about Kessel in BOS and TOR? He was more of his teams offense than any player in the league and putting up similar or even better numbers than he does in PIT, where he's played most often on the 3rd line over the past 2 seasons. $6.8m for a top 10-15 player in the league is steal. Pouliot is a prospect, which is all McCann is as well. 23 yr old D prospects are usually still trying to get into the NHL, especially on Cup winning teams. What would your counter offer be?
Haula might be, but Hagelin is worth more at the deadline. He's been there and done that. He's a 28 yr old vet ... Haula is a 26 yr old who puts up similar numbers to Hagelin. He might be talented but he didn't win a better spot in MIN and Vegas isn't really building a team right now. They're acquiring assets that they will build a team with. I also add Wilson and a 3rd, which is far more than Reinhart is worth, so that should make up a difference in value. If you don't agree then whats would your counter offer be?

Pens - Dallas
Kuhnackle is left handed and has plays LW, but has been playing RW because Wilson won that job. What's the difference between the McKenzie and Kuhnackle really? Their the same handed, similar size, both PK a bit ... Seems like about a wash. Pens lost none of their LW and a right on the left side or left on the right side don't really matter as much on offense. In fact sometimes it's better. Ovy is a RH LW and Jagr was a LH RW.
... that means Rust isn't a great playoff performer for PIT anymore. I'd move Sheary before Rust and I think you can pull more for him allowing you to have more assets. Sheary for Faksa and Johns. Sprong, Aston-Reese, and even Rust could fill in where Sheary played. And Sheary is a LH playing the right side ... so there's that too.

He scored 70pts and 23 more in the playoffs, and has one 2 cups ... that's an $9m player, making $6.8m and he's offering to retain $1m down to $5.9m? He's only 29, going on 30, and is signed for more 5 years or until he is 34, which should all still be prime years. Pavelski is 33 right now.
<strong>Meier</strong> hasn't show much yet, as I believe you said yourself. <strong>Teirney</strong> is a 3rd center and thats all he's projected to be,<strong> Braun</strong> a mid-ish defenseman on most teams, but a 5th in PIT (which is replaceable)<strong>, and a 1st</strong> (mid to late (16-30)round if SJ is a play off team) ... for a player that will out score you're best forward playing on you're 3rd line if you wanted ... He and Pavelski played together internationally too. Everyone you trade can be replaced. How many players in the league can do what Phil Kessel can do and are being paid $6.8m? He's a top 10-20 player in the NHL. He played left side point and left forward on the PP and many of his points come off the left side of the ice so transition would be simple.</div></div>
So what do you want in exchange for Kessel alone with no picks and other players?</div></div>
Kessel for Mier, Teirney, Braun, and 1st.

We could trade with Vegas and get a few Dman. We could also go farther with this trade and have NJ add in Santini, and give them a D prospect and a winger prospect (Pouliout and Archibald or Kuhnhackle) or something like that.

Like the Kessel deal ... think FLA might reject though. They would probably counter Torcheck and Demers (to open more cap space). They might even give you a 2nd Rd pick just to take Demers contract, where as with Matheson I don't think they'd give up a pick. I'd counter them Kessell for Torcheck, Pysyk, a 1st and a 3rd.
Sheahan is such a risk. I'd rather move Kuhnnackle to center and hope it works out. I wouldn't want him with out $1m in retention so I can hide him in the minors if needed. I'd offer a 5th for Sheahan and $1m in retention ... other wise I'd offer a 7th for sheahan, but Rowney can and will do at 4th C just fine.
Hate chasing Duchese. Only way I'd get him is to move him for another player I couldn't get with the pieces I give for him. I just don't like him much.
Maatta, Kuhnhackle, Pouliout, Archibald and 2nd (maybe a 1st) ... could throw in Corrado or swap a Kuhnhackle for Wilson if that helps sweeten the deal.

Pen 3C trade with Dallas
I think ever fan base says the same about their own top prospects. Sprong is NHL ready according to many, and has huge upside. He's going to be cheap talent for a few more years and that's what wins cups. Cheap talented youth complementing expensive star players. That's the Pens strategy that's got them back-to-back, but some of that youth is now costing them (Sheary and Domoulin).
As a Pens fan I think I would take this deal if I couldn't talk DAL into another player instead.
I'd rather send Sheary for Faksa and Johns so we can add a RH Dman as well.

Swapping youngsters with the Canucks
No 23 year old defensemen is a bust. That how old Dumoulin was when he got a sniff of the NHL. It's not at all uncommon, it's just that PIT fans are spoiled and expect every 1st rounder to work out in 3 years or less because we have drafted so few players in the 1st round in the past decade. If he makes the roster at 25 then great. We have a pretty damn good defensive core with out him, so he has to make it as a 7th D, which means he'd only practice rather than actually playing.
He hasn't come along defensively as quickly as we'd like, but offensively he's had the skills since he was 18 ... but we don't want him to play like OTT Karlsson. He'd be playing on nearly half the teams in the league though.
But PIT doesn't need wingers. We need Cs and D prospects the most. We also have NCAA to sign from like we did with Sheary, Rust, Aston-Reese, Johnson, etc since we're cup contenders.

yinzers gonna yinz
Don't think that's enough. Hornqivst is a UFA at seasons end making him a rental and FLA isn't a cup contender at this point, though they might be at the deadline.
Trading Torcheck doesn't help them win. He's their leading scorer, plays 60ft, he's 24, signed for 5 yrs at a rather reasonable $4.75m. So this deal is 2 players for 4-5 years contracts for Maatta and very good goalie prospect and a 2nd, that is basically a high 3rd rounder ... and 1 year of Hornqvist. They'll want more long term in the deal. Maatta for Demers is about a wash IMO.

SJS trade suggestions?
Kesssel for Meier, Tierney, Braun and a 1st ... I'd throw in Archibald or Simon or another prospect/4th liner that isn't Aston-Reese, Jarry, or Sprong ... or a 4th rounder or later.
Scott Wilson and Archibald for Tierney.
Scott Wilson and a 4th for Teirney.
Hagelin for Chris Tierney and a 2nd or 3rd.
Obviously willing for counter offers.

Why the hell would you retain any money? He's already has retention from TOR that makes him a beyond reasonable cap hit.

Bringing a Yinzer Home (A Trade with Florida)
I think FLA would want you to replace Hornqvist with a longer team younger player like Sprong or Sheary or Rust or Maatta ... I don't think they'd be willing to move Torcheck unless the felt over paid since he's 24, their leading scorer, great 2 way and on a long term reasonable contract.
Sprong, Jarry, Maatta/Sheary, a 1st and 3rd for Torcheck and .
I'd love to see Trocheck with Sheary, Rust ... any PIT winger really, but I don't think FLA moves him.

Whats the asking price on these young dmen.
Most of those teams see them selves as play off contenders and would likely want improve their teams for this season. Vegas and maybe DET would be the ones I can see taking draft picks, but DET IMO should be looking to hold on to youth and move older player for prospects and picks.
