Wadejos123s Interesting Proposal
I wouldn't do it. I would much rather take BPA and if that is a dman, trade a lesser dman prospect in the system for offensive help if necessary.
People need to realize the Habs may not even have a true #1 D prospect in the system right now. Hutson due to his size is more than likely a very good #3-4 at best. Reinbacher's offensive game is a mystery which probably means he's #2 at best. Guhle, Mailloux, solid but no superstars there. Etc etc....
If the Habs have the chance to grab a future #1 calibre dman in this draft, they should absolutely do it. Simply trade 1 of Guhle or Huston or Reinbacher, etc etc for offensive help instead.
I like Lindstrom as much as the next guy but he's not elite enough to be sacrificing a ton simply to get a chance to see if he becomes a star. He could end up being a solid 50-60 point forward also. Imagine if then the dman like Parekh is a 70-80 point scorer? Kind of defeats the purpose of trading up for Lindstrom....
The value of the deal is probably fair though. I just wouldn't do it in this draft. IMHO Picks 2-10 are all evenly talented and could each be studs in their own right.

Got to think the Habs would accept this just on the premise of good value and the team already having a surplus of young dmen.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>habs_need_Scoring</b></div><div>if i'm the flyers i'm looking at offering a 2nd with a 5th or 6th for barron instead of losing a 1st. Barron has had opportunities to crack the roster but hasnt been able to make the case to be an everyday payer in MTL so i'm not sure it would take a first to land him now.</div></div>
I sort of agree on the value standpoint but also think you may be judging him a bit harshly too. Its not every day that a team has like 4-5 under 23 yo NHL ready dmen all competing for the last couple spots on a team. He's showed he's more than capable at the NHL but ppl have to be reminded that he is also still young too. He's susceptible to brain farts but most 22 yo dmen are. I think we judge him harsher simply based on the fact we have a plethora of other options. That doesn't mean he wouldn't be an everyday dman on another team with less depth. Habs have an abnormal amount of young depth at this level that they can afford to not be as patient.

UFA frenzy dilemma
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>It might be time to accept that Dach isn't going to be a center but instead a big winger and bring in a 2C like Lindholm.</div></div>
How does his limited playing time this season show that exactly? In the limited time he had to show he was a center this year and last, he's been great..... I think making a judgement call now does make any sense. If its simply based on his injury history, well that's where a really good 3C is absolutely necessary. Either way, that certainly hasn't decided anything about his effectiveness at center. Habs aren't contending so they'll follow the process with him at center to its conclusion which isn't after like 30 games at center on the team.
With that said, I'd be ok adding Lindholm as a safety net who also can either play the center if Dach falters or the wing if he doesn't. Never hurts to have two centers on the same line IMHO.

UFA frenzy dilemma
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ht42</b></div><div>I really think Montreal will gonna get rid of Dvorack to bring back Monahan for their 3rd line centerman.
Also, they can also make the big shot with Stamkos. They likely gonna target a free agent who can bring somes leadership for the team on a short time. Also, Stamkos have already a solid natural fit with St-Louis and Lecavalier, and also a close childhood friend who can convince him to sign with the Habs is PK Subban...........
Another bold prediction : I think they will try to keep Primeau, but I think that they will not gonna be sure about his real potential futhermore. I think a team like the Flyers (who will gonna need a 2nd goalie next season) can be very interrested on him. That's bring me the quote that the Habs can decide to sign Fleury for a final season of his career for becoming the back-up of Montembeault (and that's can help Monty A LOT for his confidence).</div></div>
I would not be mad if the Habs went after Monahan at this price BUT I do think they should make a concerted effort to get someone for the top 6 more, even at the cost of overpaying, than adding to the bottom 6. Honestly I'm all for overpaying on shorter term contracts right now. If Marchessault or Stamkos want 11M for 2 years, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

UFA frenzy dilemma
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Teravainen and Marchessault would seem to me to be the best forward fits, but I have no idea what they would sign for. (The former looks low and the latter looks high.) Pesce is the best defensive signing and I think that you have his numbers right.</div></div>
Its anyone guess but my thinking was if Marchessault entertained coming to MTL, it had to be quite a lucrative offer. I doubt many teams could offer higher than this on 4 years. For Turbo, I looked at his injury history and figured he'd want a longer term contract over cashing in as high as possible on a shorter one for some cost certainty. So I brought the AAV down a little but made the deal go into his late 30's to compensate.
Also keep in mind, some of these are inflated on purpose for the "MTL tax". No one in their right mind should be giving Stamkos 10M a year at his age but I think what he still has to offer would be worth overpaying for if I were MTL.
Pesce may be one that Im undervaluing if Im being honest. With the RHD shortage on the market, their will be a bidding war. I think a serious team may have to go 7x7 frankly. MTL especially due to the forementioned "MTL tax".

Roster improvements
I'd be ok with this ONLY if it was at the TDL next season and no other deals yielded a better offer with retention for other players on the team such as Savard, Dvorak, Armia etc.. Unfortunately the Habs only have a single retention slot available so they have to make it count and there simply is no rush to move JA out with 50% retention for 3 more years as of this off season. By the TDL we'd have way more info on who'd be the best to move with last retention spot. Making the gamble now is an unnecessary one.
If it were next off season though? I'd accept in a heartbeat. We'd have 3 full retention slots again.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GuyGuyGuy</b></div><div>It was a first but some retention, wich was the reason he refused</div></div>
Actually we don't even know. That's the problem. The "rumor" was intentionally vague. All it said was a team had been rumored to offer in a deal a 1st for Anderson and Hughes declined. There was no mention of what the amount of retention was or even if there were other negative assets added to the deal potentially. I don't think the amount of retention is even an issue for KH. It was simply losing a retention spot for 4 years while knowing there were a ton of other pending UFA players that would have needed to be moved before JA's contract was up that held it up.

The gap between higher cap/lower term and lower cap/higher term is not close enough to me for Minny to accept. 7M over 2 years is WAYYYY worse than 2.1 over 4 more years. I don't think either team is too worried about actual salaries here. Its just the cap difference is too monumental.
Lee's contract is a burden. Gaudreau's is an annoyance.

Its important to remember that cap space isn't an issue until its needed so depending on what the Habs do in free agency, which is likely nothing of major significance, there is not going to be a need for cap space any time soon. So why do this exactly? The whole point of moving cap dumps with 1sts is because in order to sign/ trade for big expensive names, you need to create cap space. MTL isn't the most desirable place to play for most UFA's so chances are they aren't going to add a lot of big names that way. By trade? Who would they realistically add making more than what Suzuki makes that isn't in the mid 30's?? I don't see it. All the guys they're targeting are mid range cap hits and any prospect they have won't need a huge raise anytime soon.
The value is probably spot on, it would take a 1st each to move both guys at current cap hits but the Habs have so little reason to do so. Both guys despite being really bad this year are at the very least "character guys" that their teammates love and respect. So they aint hurting the Habs development. Just their standings but they are rebuilding so that's a good thing, I guess.
ON THE FLIPSIDE, If the Habs land Celebrini this year and then entice a big name in free agency to sign here (Stamkos, Marchessault, etc) moving the Habs playoff expectations drastically closer, I think I would make a concerted effort to move out one of those two at just about all costs. Buy out being the most likely if a 50% retention trade offer wasn't enough to get someone to bite. While the Habs don't need cap space necessarily, they are starting to get to the point of needing roster spot flexibility. Gally and Anderson are essentially taking up the same 4th line RW spot and for a team looking to finally contend and that may be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
Back to reality, I think Anderson will be moved next offseason (when they have more retention slots available) with significant retention for little to no return. Its clear as day he does not fit this team and this coach anymore and not giving in to moving him out with incentives is only hurting your team more when other youngsters are not getting ice time as a result. Sometimes paying to get rid of someone is a necessary move.
As for Gallagher, there is no move to be made there, not even with max retention. Either he rides into the sunset with MTL as a 4th liner for the remainder of his contract or he gets bought out at some point. My gut is they keep him as long as he provides <em>some</em> value to the team. Then in the final year of his contract is bought out unless they really aren't lacking for cap space and don't mind keeping him around the team to finish it out. Also he has a high chance of being LTIRetired at some point here too so that could be valuable to the Habs looking to exceed the cap ceiling in a playoff run.

Trying to fill out a roster
I think if the Habs needed the cap and roster space for a center, they'd probably do this for Dvorak. Center depth is weak so moving him is only necessary if they intend to replace him with someone better. If not they have little reason to move him. They'd just have to go get another Dvorak type center again so its defeats the purpose.
Anderson on the other hand, if there is a move to be made, I'd be interested in. I think Habs mgmt would welcome moving him for pennies on the dollar right now and frankly even with sweeteners to move him out if need be. ONLY if its to remove his cap entirely though. They're not retaining on him and if they take someone back, that contract has to be off their books soonish. If those criteria can't be met, they might as well buy him out then.

That 2nd is looking like an early 3rd at this point with the way Florida is playing. Late 2nd this year vs an unknown 3rd next year and a potential late 3rd this year, if not 4th. We're not talking about two 1sts in value more. We're talking about one or two rounds higher on one pick. I'm pretty confident they could hold out just a little bit longer. It's not like the quick trigger helped their return any.</div></div>
I mean, what, moving a 4th to a 3rd instead? Maybe instead of both picks, one 2nd was given instead? Yeah I guess. In the grand scheme of things its small bananas with some risk. Considering there is also a chance they get less then they got because they are the ones that are desperate. Yeah they could have gotten slightly better. They also could have gotten even worse. They hedged their bet early and didn't risk losing him for a 5th rounder right before the deadline when Florida says take it or leave it. Which they would have had to take no questions asked.
Tarasenko's NMC makes it impossible to know. For all we know, Florida was the only team he wanted to go to that also wanted him. (And potentially could fit him in under the cap). I can only guess that the reason Ott moved him asap was because the teams that fit all the criterion, I previously mentioned was equal to 1. Maybe 2.
There was definitely more supply than there were Tarasenko destination options. Once again based on what we can assume was a pretty specific amount of teams he'd go to.

In a world of endless demand for a product, sure. That isn't the NHL. Finite cap space, finite picks and prospects, finite roster spots and the most important is finite amount of teams he'd waive to go to. If those teams all go out and spend on other options today, they are now going to spend more for Tarasenko tomorrow for some reason because why?

IMHO An absolute disaster of a trade from the Habs perspective. I was sort of on board at quick glance because I thought it was the 2024 1st which has a chance of being quite high.... but for the 2025 1st, why one earth would we do that? Are we to expect NJ to be a worse team next year with the addition of solid goaltending?. It literally the one thing holding them back from being a legit playoff team..... Really really narrow minded gamble from the Habs perspective here. The goal you're trying to achieve can be done without even doing this, so why are we exactly?
Want Askarov? Fine, go get him. Habs already have all the assets to get him if they really do and having a tandem of Monty/Askarov would be amazing with Fowler coming in once Monty's contract is done. or sooner if needed. Habs mgmt is already poised to make significant improvements to the team next year in order to try and be more competitive. So, you are right, this trade won't happen in reality and frankly Im glad it won't.
This is not even to mention that it would be in bad taste to move the recently signed local boy right after locking him up long term, for....... picks and prospects.
