Idk about this one
This either will work out great or blow up in their face
I feel a bridge may have been better as he probs would end up making this amount anyways afterwards or heck maybe less

Washington Capitals signed Tom Wilson (7 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
I voted no for the 7 years but here's the thing: players like Wilson don't grow on trees. He's a big, skilled power forward who brings character and leadership and can bully and intimidate other teams which is something not many NHL players can do in this era.
It's likely going to age poorly because of his injury history but the Caps are going to have a lot of cap space in the near future. Let's face facts: every team in the league would love to have a Tom Wilson on their team, especially after seeing how Vegas steamrolled their way to a Stanley Cup.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RawDeal</b></div><div>I really like Wilson, but Wow, those signing bonuses! Without those I would 'consider' voting yes.</div></div>
Its the length. Look at the way he plays (and I'm sure I'd love him if he were on my team for that way). Do you really think it is likely he keeps it up for that many years into his mid 30s?

This seems like a terrrrrrrible contract. While I see Caps fans points that some other GM would be dumb enough to overpay for a power forward at 30, can GM's not see that power forwards don't age well.
Dude is an absolute beast and intimidating as heck. But he has cracked 50 points once in his entire career. Many will point out, but thats because he has played shorter seasons, but thats the point. Between injuries and suspensions he is missing games nearly every season. He's already had an ACL repair. This contract doesn't even start for another year. So sure if he can stay health enough to play enough games and keep up with his style of play and put up 20-25 goals and 55 points for those years while physically dominating the opposition it is a solid deal.
But does anyone really think that is likely? I for one would be surprised if he is more than a third liner who can hit by about 3-4 years from now. Plus he has to play big seasons.
This has Lucic/Clarkson/etc written allllll over it.

This is bad... purely because it's too long. Wilson is going to be a Robidas island local at the end of this and it's predictable.

Not really sure why this had to happen now? Quite a sizeable gamble if you ask me. His age, play style, and health are all major red flags to me. The term is what makes this a bad contract. You want to give him this extension? Fine. But it's about 4 years too long. This would scare me if I was a Caps fan.

WHY!?
He just came off of a major injury last season. Why would you sign him to such a long extension when you don't know if he will bounce back or not?
And it is more than 50% signing bonuses, including nearly all signing bonuses for the last two seasons, so it is buyout proof.

(PHI/STL) - Hayes for 2024 6th (STL)
After all these absolute salary dumps, and cap being the most valuable thing: watch all the dumb signings in a couple days.
Get ready for
Bertuzzi who has cracked 50 points once, and can't stay healthy to get 6-8 million for term.
Compher who has cracked 35 points once, getting mid to high 5s and term
Barbashev who has cracked 50 points once and 30 points twice, to get mid to high 5s for term
Bunting to get north of 4, potentially north of 5 million who did admittedly get 63 points and 49 points in his only 2 full NHL seasons. But while I don't have with/without you stats, from my eye test/memory, he scored like a 25-30 point scorer when not with Matthews or Marner.... I'd rather have Hall for 2 years at 6, then Bunting for term at 5...

I get it it's a cap dump, but only a 6th? I figured the Flyers might be able to get a bit more than that for Hayes 50% retained.

The Pens strategy is confusing to me: The Letang and Rakell contracts scream "We're all in for 3 years then when Sid is done we're okay with being terrible." That's fine, but if that's the case, why are you lowballing Geno and refusing to give him 4 years? Odd

I’m sorry, but with this signing, you now have 10 million dollars remaining, you still need some depth forwards, and you still need to sign Kasperi Kapanen with Malkin looking at his options, reminder that Kapanen had his rights in Europe traded this season for Linden Vey or something….
Have fun Pens
Also 5M for a 41 point scorer? This feels like a signing for the “idea” of a consistent goal scorer, 6 years too.

Adding onto this point: if this contract was signed with the intention of him not playing out the full six years (ie going on LITR and becoming a trading asset), that sounds a lot like cap circumvention.
