It's funny because for four years, a good portion of the fanbase argued that that money they spent on him couldn't have been used more productively. Now some of them want the team to reorganize the cap structure and get the team more depth...
Tavares is an outstanding player and has been for the Leafs his entire time there. But he's an $11 million 2C who might be in decline and hasn't pushed them over the edge in the playoffs (2021 aside). To an outsider, it doesn't seem like this is working anymore. His NMC and bad PR probably prevents it, but that's the easiest way to real and potentially positive change in Toronto I think....

Tavares is the one imo. If there's a team he'd waive for, I'd seriously consider it

Grzelcyk has been a great #3 defenseman for years now. He moves the puck, can defend well and has helped QB one of the best power plays in the league over the past few seasons. He'd fill our biggest need immediately

I honestly don't think we should have to pay to move Bailey and I wouldn't trade Raty for Chychrun (or trade for Chychrun at all tbh).

little change
Tbh after this past season, I'm kinda interested in seeing what we've got in Holmstrom. Not interested in trading him unless it's for a big piece (not Martinez)
Rest of the trades are good imo, but I kinda doubt we'll be this active...

Caps
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Islesforthecup</b></div><div>Isles get the more expensive player plus give a pick? Hagelin has negative value. A 6th should cover paniks 250k dead cap if hes buried. That leaves hagelin going to the isles for... nothing? Isles decline.</div></div>
Hagelin hasn’t scored much this year but he’s proven to be a solid defender and is a straight line player. I think he’d be a solid addition to the third line and — like you said — Isles would be getting him for nothing. They don’t have a cap issue this year

For sure, Dadonov especially. Kapanen is still young-ish so maybe he could stick around. But yeah, DeBrincat, Seth Jones, Reichel and maybe Caleb and Strome are the only guys I see being here when we're good again. Maybe Raddysh creeps in there if he keeps this up

My concern is that I thought they'd score a lot this year too and they haven't. Maybe with Dadonov and Kappy and if Dach, Mittelstadt and Kurashev take some steps forward we'll be better

Trade doesn't have to be with Chicago, although I would be interested in giving Samsonov a look. We don't have any goalies signed for next year after Soderblom, who isn't ready to start and ample cap space. Buying low on his potential could be a good play for a number of young, noncontending teams.

Quick Retool for Next Year No Major Moves
Dadonov is definitely an upgrade over Bailey. The issue is is that I don't think Bailey is going to have that much of a market this offseason and will either stay or get bought out, which might hinder our ability to make a move for a player as expensive as Dadonov.
Kulak I love and I think would be a great fit

Palmieri has been very good this season, even when the points weren't coming. Shouldn't be trading him for a vastly inferior player, even if it does give us a little more cap flexibility

Whats The Play Here
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Benzino204</b></div><div>I don't think Martinez is a fit. They have a solid top 4 when they resign Dobson, and they have cheaper decent guys like Salo for their bottom pairing.</div></div>
I think Salo will be a #7 this season and get some significant playing time when injuries inevitably occur. Then in 23-24, he'll be a regular and probably playing better than his role would suggest, if all goes right. Could be a very valuable development path for us. Based on his performance this season, I'm not sure a full-time role in the NHL next season is where he's at yet. He definitely showed flashes and I think he's gonna be a NHLer, but he's not quite there yet. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think we'll get two NHL d-men this offseason and he'll get pushed out, at least for 22-23.
As for the rest of them, 3, 6 and 8 are all excellent, but if we don't get a legit lefthanded 2nd pairing guy to play with Dobson, I really think we're going to struggle. Greene has had his moments, but he's not what he once was and Chara is an unmitigated disaster. Need more stability in such an important spot. I've said before, I think there are better options than Martinez and I think getting our money in order could be a struggle in 23-24 with him on our books. But he's a good player and we could do (and have done) much worse at 2LD since we gave Devon Toews away

Whats The Play Here
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Ultimately, and maybe Vegas fans will disagree but:
the Eichel trade continues to give and give and give....
I dont think most thought beyond the immediate trade cost of Krebs, picks and Tuch, but the fact was that VGS did not and will not have the cap space. So the actual trade cost is Krebs, picks, Tuch, sitting Smith or Dandanov AND the inability to resign any of the UFAs and struggle to sign the RFAs. The trade cost them pretty much all their depth and has put them in a corner with an aging NTC forward corps.
It wasnt that long ago that fans were amazed that VGS was able to crow bar in Pietrangelo, but the mgmt continued to move prospects and picks to compete now and "now" seems to be over already.
All the big contract forwards have NMC/NTC which makes things difficult, but I would expect that VGS will have to give up Martinez and another piece for almost nothing. When Kiefer Bellows and Brassard are on your 3rd line, you're in trouble.</div></div>
Agreed with everything until the last paragraph, Kieffer Bellows slander isn't tolerated here

I shouldn't talk about Monahan like that. I do like him and he's probably just struggling under Sutter (despite the rest of the Flames being improved). But that cap space, even for a year, could be spent so much more productively.
