Needs
Feel this is a bit of a pipedream but this would be an incredible team imo. Everyone gets what they want. Top talent around 87, new linemates with speed and skill for 71, a dangerous 3rd line, and keeps the grit that GMJR so evidently feels we need (by keeping Guddy)

Thoughts on trade plus more moves
Penguins dumped an a guy who scored 174 points in 164 games. Phil was the catalyst for the penguins winning 2 cups also.....
They received 1.9 millions in cap relief and a guy who scored 92 points in 154games.
That’s 82 less points over 2 seasons..... not to mention AG is a ufa next year.
They got a solid D prospect
Imo the penguins are just making moves to make moves. They have literally closed the window in 1 calendar year. Seems dramatic but look what they gave up compared to what the received. This includes that awful JJ signing.

Unless Letang likes playing on his offside and magically finds out his birth certificate is wrong and he's actually 27, I just don't see it happening. Plus your trading a francophone for another francophone. That is lateral move in the francophone player index. :p

Hornqvist's "skills" won't deminish the way a skill player's "skills" will. Teams would trade for Hornqvist. But that is a different argument.</div></div>
Bennett is 22 and plays a similar game to Hornqvist and by trading making this trade, the Pens shed some cap, how is this horribly in Calgary's favour again?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>biglite351</b></div><div>How so? Hornqvist, Jarry, and a 4th for his RFA rights is horribly in Calgary favor. If Calgary is not planning to resign him, his rights could be had for a 3rd if not that 4th alone. Calgary AGMs here are signing him for an average of under/about $2.5M per. You are giving him 50% over what the fans of his team think that he is worth, and that is after an amazingly lopsided trade. How so...</div></div>
It's not horribly in Calgary's favour.
Hornqvist holds a burden of a contract that's only going to get worse as it progresses. Shedding his cap hit is a win in itself

He cant score like he used to and is a net negative now when it comes to scoring chances produced vs the scoring chances he creates for the opposition.</div></div>
He can’t score like he used to? He’s always been between 25-35 goals and scored 27 this year. In four years with Pittsburgh, that’s his second highest total. It’s his 6th highest total in his career. Hardly lacking in the scoring department. Especially considering he is still averaging a ppg in a “down” year where the team mostly struggled.

He is showing his age badly. Also Matta won’t get you much value either along side players like Johnson, Gudbranson, Bjugstad, etc. gmjr bet the farm on this roster and got obliterated. this is one salty hawks fan.
If you think Gudbranson has no trade value from how he's played in Pittsburgh you are kidding yourself.
Your bitterness really shows when you think Jugs has no trade value. That's just laughable.

Offer sheet Kapanen and then trade Kessel for whatever picks you have to give up and we basically got Kessel on an interest free loan.

With Malkin you could probably get Huberdeau as well or instead or tippet or the 1 round pick
Kessel is not a 80 point guy any more after this year because he will start to decrease very soon so you could probably get Chychrun and a 2nd and Davorak instead of the 1st.
Panarin would be in the same situation as he was in Chicago he would be over shaded by Crosby . No hate or anything just I thought those thing stand out.

Playoff Lines Game 2
nothing wrong with the game one lines. They need to role with them again. If they made one change it should be JJ for Maatta, but lets see after game two.
The second and third lines Feasted on the Islanders. No need to mess with them. The 4th line for the limited time it had on the ice has to do better. They were like a 40% corsi in their 8 minutes.
They need to convert. To many scoring chances didn't go in.
They also have to have faith in Crosby and Jake to out play the 4th line of the Islanders. It will happen. That line is the Islanders best possession line. They had a lot of turn overs against that line, 6 and not one take away. They will clean that up and watch out the game will be one sided like it was last night past the 30 minute mark. Malkin's line ate up the NYI 1st line like it was breakfast. They had like a 70% corsi there. I'll take that match up every night if that's what they want to give me.
The line up was a +20 on the Corsi. You can't ask for better play than that. NYI got lucky in game one. No team is going to win many games giving up 20% corsi. They also won't get a game where the 1st line plays that bad again.
The penguins will start to take this series over. They will win game two. and then it's over because the Islanders can't match up to the top 3 lines well.

Maatta out indefinitely
hard to say on Maatta.
It would help if we knew the injury not just a shoulder.
If 'ts an AC/SC issues vs a Separation.
Either way you are probably looking at roughly 4 weeks? if not longer.
Problem is he has a history of shoulder issues, not sure if it's the same one.
Once you dislocate a shoulder it gets easier every time because those tissues never return to normal. But you also have less pain because of it.
If Schultz is coming back I don't think they even make a move. If anything Maatta goes to IR and they open cap space.
Just glad it's not Letang or Dumo

I don't foresee them making a huge move to fill in for Maatta even if its longer term but would have been nice if they kept Oleksiak right now.</div></div>
Everyone knows why they got rid of him. It wasn't a numbers game. He had a role, was the only reason he was there. He wasn't aggressive in filling it.
Clearly that lead to issues, and he went out the door.
