Matthews is born 2 days earlier
They would have drafted Marner regardless, but assuming they don't get Matthews and aren't good as quickly as they were, that also likely means:
Tavares doesn't sign in Toronto, they wouldn't be contenders yet lacking a No. 1 C. Laine is an elite goal scoring W but I'm not sure he really tips the scale.
Kadri maybe doesn't get traded because the Leafs don't have a Matthews-Tavares 1-2 punch to lean on. Kerfoot and Barrie likely never become Leafs
They don't spend assets to get Muzzin because they're still in a rebuild.
They might not sign Brodie if they don't seem like contenders right now.
The contract negotiations go differently because Marner doesn't have Matthews and Tavares to point to as comparable. Nylander probably stays about the same but Marner is maybe 2M cheaper.
They don't need to shed cap so Kapanen and Johnsson are probably still in Toronto
With no pressure on the cap they also probably don't move Zaitsev
Who knows what happens with Thornton, Simmonds, Speeza, Bogo, or all the others who came cheap.
Laine - Kadri - Marner
Hyman - Nylander - Kapanen
Johnsson - Engvall - Mikheyev
Boyd - Brooks - Barabanov/Vesey
Rielly - Zaitsev
Sandin - Holl
Dermott - Liljegren
Marincin

Okay... but why? For any of it. The third line of Hyman-Engvall-Mikheyev have been very good and the team needs a 2nd line winger to compliment JT and Willy better than Kerfoot does (or at least for cheaper than Kerfoot is). If you're just using Simmonds on the 2nd Line then there's no point in acquiring Foligno or Ryan. It actually makes the third line worse getting them. I like David Savard but if they aren't moving out someone like Holl or Bogo, which they shouldn't, he doesn't really have a spot until next season. Dermott compliments Bogo and gives him a puck-moving relief valve, and their top-4 is set. Maybe in the off-season they should look into him, but they have bigger fish right now trying to lock up Hyman.

Brady
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>csick</b></div><div>We need elite guys who drive play not guys who ride shotgun. Brady drives play</div></div>
He wouldn't on that line. He would ride shotgun... That's what you do when you play with an elite talent like Matthews or Tavares. I don't even think he really drives the line right now but that's a conversation for another day.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Wait what? Since when? He's not even top 50 in scoring which is the only thing he can actually do</div></div>
Look at the numbers, man. T-47th in scoring which puts him T-42 among forwards. T-41 in goals ahead of Svech, Crosby, OV, Wheeler, Tavares, Matthew Tkachuk, etc. Next time do just a small amount of research.
People need to stop trading Nylander. Guy is on-pace for another 30 goal campaign and is easily the only player of the big four with a reasonable salary. He forechecks hard, goes to the dirty areas and drives the net (if you STILL doubt that given he had the most goals from there in the NHL last season then you don't watch the games) and is better defensively for a winger than given credit for. Problem being fans typically have no idea what a wing is responsible for defensively. Stop it. Stop trading him for every 40 point winger who hits people you can find.

Leafs 2020-21
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Missed that, thanks....
First off, no one can roll with 18 players, thinking that you don't have to carry a 13th forward and 7th dman, even at league minimum is crazy. And I don't think Spezza takes another sweetheart deal for this mess though, when he easily gets twice that with a better contender.
And again you're dealing two or three guys with mid level/lower salaries, (kappy, johnsson, dermott), all your depth, and you still have just enough for probably one quality defenseman. And those guys are quality for their salary, theres no way you get that production or level of play from league minimum guys.
The defense and team defense are weak, if you deal your mid level salaries, you are going to wind up playing 5-6, even 7 youngsters a night, (and I'm not convinced they're good youngsters), and still have the same weaknesses. The increase to holl, muzzin, Campbell had to be done, but again that's just to maintain the pretty average status quo. If we had more kapanens, reillys, sandins or Matthews coming thru the system, great, but we don't (only leaf fans think we have this awesome prospect pool) and are very hopefully expecting them to over achieve, due to the fact were capped out, and no help is coming.
Looking at the cap picture for next year, dealing a kapanen or johnsson doesn't help or address the team weaknesses, but dealing a bigger salary might.
All I'm saying is based on the salaries for next year, expect the same firewagon offense, one of the leagues worst defenses</div></div>
They do it all the time. Their AHL affiliate plays like 20 minutes away. They've been doing it a lot this season, too. Not crazy to think they take advantage of geography for some cap savings.
Already reported if Spezza chooses to play he will take another sweetheart deal so... I mean, I trust Friedman here.
You have Dermott making 2.9 and Kappy makes just over 3. 5.9M can get a pretty good D. That's Manson pr Pesce with room to give. You dont have to give up one of the bigger fish to get one of them.
That's how teams should be built. You lock up the stars, cycle through the young guys and depth guys, trade them for picks, use those to cycle through more depth of young guys and cheap FA signings. The cycle continues. Blackhawks/Penguins model before Blackhawks started giving out thank you deals to their depth.
Rielly - Pesce/Manson, Muzzin - Holl, Sandin - Liljegren is a perfectly fine core. Engvall, Mikheyev give the 3rd line some depth allowing to move Johnsson and/or Kappy.
They really only have to get through next season and then the new TV deal and expansion money will likely explode the cap. No sense trading a key piece when you don't need to.

Nylander for Burns with 2mil retained and a 1st
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lovie_Smith</b></div><div>They will have MAYBE 6mil to sign 3 or 4 players. And I assume they are not going to want to let all of Barrie, Ceci, Clifford, and Spezza just walk, that isn't even considering their RFA class. Most of which are due for considerable raises. I don't know anything about their prospects though. But regardless it is going to be difficult. And correct me if I am mistaken, but aren't they going to have some overages/bonuses from this season to compensate for on next seasons cap hit? They do not have it easy in the cap maneuverability department and they are going to have to pull some interesting stuff to do it. Probably including moving one of their big 3 contracts, nylander, or Kapanen. You are only thinking about the next season. But a GM also has to balance that with the long term and not putting themselves in a position to make desperate moves moving pieces just to get under the cap with garbage return on them, 1 or 2 or 3 years down the road. Then again we are talking about Dubas.</div></div>
They'll have about 9M free before factoring the cap rising. You can probably get Spezza and Clifford for 2.2 combined. Leaving Mikheyev and Dermott to resign. Probably about 4M combined there (2.8 and 1.1, respectively). Leaves about 2.8 free before factoring any trades. It's not ideal but they have a small bit of wiggle room to maneuver with. Likely one of Kap or Johnsson end up moving for a D, though.
They really just have to get to expansion and the new TV deal.

I think your number is a bit high on Spezza, and your number includes about $1.6M in extra players (Marincin and Bracco) I dont think they carry throughout the season (likely AHL guys who get called up).
Actually, looking at it, you didn't raise the cap so the number you quote for them being over is wrong. It is based on an 81.5 cap. At 83, the expected cap, they are $3.2 over. Subtract the 1.6M in extra players, and about 800K for Spezza (he will retire or go low again) they are actually about 800K over.
Trade Dermott and Kappy/Johnsson as part of a package for a defensive upgrade and that's over 6M right there.

True. Bad contracts can be moved... but likely not in exchange for one of the other teams best young players and perhaps best contracts. That doesn't happen. You could see a Subban/Weber type deal, though.

If he's on the ice for more goals against than for he's bad. Last year your supposed defensive defenseman was on the ice for the 4th most goals against 5v5 (77). That's significantly more than Tyson Barrie (53). Over the last two combined years has been on for 109 goals against 5v5. That's MORE than Tyson Barrie (105).
The difference is Larrson was only on for 63 goals for during those two years while Barrie was on for 111. Barrie was a positive player while your supposed defensive D got destroyed defensively.
Sorry if easy numbers are too hard for you but facts are facts. If you understood the game at all it wouldn't be so hard to understand. Your defensive D is awful defensively. Facts. His comparable is Cody F-ing Ceci.
But sure...I'm the one new to hockey. Enjoy convincing anyone a guy who compares to Cody Ceci is a good defensive D in the NHL.

If it was one line or pair always falling apart I'd be with you but it's a team defense issue. That's forwards all the way down, and a goalie not stopping pucks. That said, Manson helps solidify things and pushes the RHD depth chart back into alignment (Holl is being to play top RHD right now and he's just not that guy).

Yes. Enough has gone wrong outside of his control that the organization will be convinced it was a fluke. He can point to their decision not to fire Babcock earlier when he wanted to, injuries, flu, and the most consistent goalie the last three years falling off a cliff and he'll have a point. Completely unforeseeable. He then can put up Engvall, Mikheyev, Holl, and Sandin as his triumphs this year, guys he picked, signed, or developed. In short, yes, he has a job. It's definitely not a cap hit thing. The Leafs will have room based on expiring contracts and the suspected raise in cap (even with the reported 5.5x4 Muzzin extension). The issue is cost vs. return and I love Subban, but I'm not sure he's worth Kapanen unless you're sure his injuries aren't going to linger long-term. If you're reasonably sure you're getting 2017-18 or even 2018-19 Subban back he's worth 4.5M and Kappy. If you're not then he isn't.

Unless Dermott is going to be traded</div></div>
Issue is Sandin night not be ready for a shutdown role, Rielly isn't suited to it, and Dermott is a 3rd pairing guy. He can play the right, but more likely he gets traded. Liljegren becomes RD3, Holl is RD2, now need an RD1 and an LD2. Muzzin is the LD2. With 1.3 or so left of cap, you trade Kapanen as part of any deal. Frees up about 4.5 overall, that's what your RD1 has to make. Unless Johnsson is out, too. Then you have wiggle room.
