no its not... not to mention the endorsements in Toronto are way bigger. the money he makes with Sonnet (****ty company that over paid him) makes up for any "tax differences"

tax is somewhat offset by the difference in advertisement/etc deals in Toronto vs. Carolina though

So the Leafs have Bertuzzi and Copp for 9m. Wouldn't the Leafs be better off keeping Reilly and Kerfoot for 8.5m and keeping top prospect Amirov and a first?

On 2 year deal Dermott is likely to receive 2% of the cap.
This is the way things have gone in the NHL, that's 1.75 million.
Overall this is realistic but I'd say Robertson is likely at least 1 year away from being on the Leafs.

So could Hyman or Miky, I think even Engvall could put up numbers like Johnsson has so far if he was playing with Matthews & Nylander

I really like Clifford, but I don't know if resigning him is worth changing that third to a second. They can probably pick up someone who brings the same kind of thing through FA this summer.

The Leafs can probably easily navigate this offseason, if they are fine with their D. All they would need to do is find a place for Johnsson , just like you did.
Where it becomes interesting is the following offseason.
How do you extend Andersen and Hyman with a flat cap of 81.5, then the next season at 82.5 what does a Rielly extension look like?

This is the kind of defense you get by someone just putting names down on a piece of paper.
5 Left handed guys. There goes your teams ability to actually play hockey. No point to point passes, teams will be all over you forcing mistakes.</div></div>
Vegas rolled out 5 LHD, Yotes rolled out 5 LHD - I see no reason this Defense gets decimated on a nightly basis - everything you said about this Defense is nonsense

Why should the Leafs trade a regular NHL Dman or a cheap contract? Leafs are having enough trouble getting NHL Dmen, so have never seen the logic in trading Dermot

Really Nice Team
Unpopular opinion time:
I honestly think we don't need to add on defence:
Sandin is ready to have a breakout year after a dominant AHL performance last year and a productive call-up. He has also shown he can play right-side and would not be surprised if he ended up with Rielly. Muzzin and Holl are already a great pairing and don't need to be touched. That leaves us with Dermott and Lehtonen who I'm fine with playing together. So basically, we have a solid second pairing, a wildcard bottom pairing with two guys set to explode this year, and a mediocre top pairing.
People often overlook the fact that an elite defencemen like Rielly doesn't need another elite defencemen, they need someone who plays a complimentary game, like Hainsey. People also overlook the fact that Dermott is already a solid 2nd pairing defensemen at the ripe age of 23. He was a year younger then DeMelo was when he was part of the Karlsson trade, and Dermott is significantly better then DeMelo was at that time. It's ridiculous to think people want to ship Dermott of for scraps just to go sign him.

2019 Leafs Oct 2 Starting Lineup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Gauss</b></div><div>From what I saw of the preseason I have not been impressed with Kapanen on the LW with Tavares and Marner. They really miss Hyman. Kapanen may start there but I think Trevor Moore will get a shot there before hyman is back and Kapanen will be back on the third line. I want to see what Mikheyev, Kerfoot and Kapanen will do. I think Kapanen will fit in better with them.</div></div>
Alternatively, put Mikheyev with Tavares and Marner. Although I must say I like the idea of Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Kapanen. The three of them have an insane speed, and it would be great to watch.
In the end, it would be hard to go wrong with the top 9 this year.

Trading Ceci
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>csick</b></div><div>Ceci is a tank machine</div></div>
I really don't think Ceci is as bad as he was in Ottawa. If nothing else, simply playing on an elite team like Toronto will fix a lot of his blemishes or at the very least not make them seem as apparent as they were in Ottawa these past few years. Would Ceci be a black hole of a player on TB? Can anyone be that bad on a team like that? I don't think they can even if they tried. I think his only problem is that he was played as a top pairing/ high minute top 4 on an overall bad team which he is not capable of baring the load on. Doesn't mean he is bad, simply means he was deployed incorrectly. Similar to Risto in Buffalo, the team was forced to put a player not good enough to bare the big work load in that spot and he is getting the criticism for not being able to handle it. Maybe the coaching staff needs to deploy the player correctly more than the player needs to master the position he's not capable of doing.

The Leafs with Hyman and Dermott
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>borealis</b></div><div>After signing Big Four, Leafs can't afford to pay $2.250m for Hyman's skill set. He will be 28 in June. Imo, either trade him for prospects or seek to resign him at +$700k. There are plenty of twenty-somethings in NHL who would can deliver the services that Hyman provides and would be thrilled to play with Tavares. Careful cap mgmt is sad reality of recent signings...and, imo, Hyman is overpaid for what he delivers. Leafs will need $ for likes of Dermott, Freddie, etc.</div></div>
21 goals in 71 goals with no PP time. Don't know many players that make just 2.25m that can provide that productivity at such a low price. He's one of the better bargains for 20 goal, 40 point players in the league not on ELCs.

Rielly is my choice, then Matthews over Tavares, mainly because Matthews is the face and his leadership improvements have impressed me. He wanted to win so bad last year in the playoffs and totally carried his linemates around the ice. Tavares is absolutely a worth candidate but he's a lesser player than Matthews. Still though Rielly is the clear choice in my eyes. He's such a class act. How he handled the homophobic slur situation was something else. He didn't have to say or do anything but felt it was vitally important to speak out against slurs anyways. He's my captain.

I've said for months, Leafs need cap, and this type of trade is needed by the Leafs, and Nylander is the logical guy to be traded. As a Leaf, I'd do the trade and it might be about the best offer they would receive....cap relief, mid round !st round and one year of a capable RHD

I'll never understand the logic that because Marner is the best scorer on his team (the Leafs) he is entitled to 11m. But they logic there should be 31 players making 11m next season. Next season McDavid, Doughty Tavares and overpaid Matthews and maybe Karlsson makes 11, Hard to to present an argument that Marner is the third best player in the league

Deadline Push
Remember back in the day when TO always traded their first round picks and prospects for huge upgrades at the deadline? They made it to the conference finals twice and never had high end prospects to help Sundin.
How about you settle it down and take a deep breath. There is no guarantee this will do anything other than alter the team chemistry. If you can find an upgrade at RHD that makes sense, go for it. But having zero 1st rounders for the next 3 years, as well as giving up our top prospect (maybe 2nd best if you consider Sandin better) is about as short sighted and dumb as it gets.

Wishful thinking opposite of being patient
You're severely hurting the Leafs PK units if you move Brown and Hyman. One of them will probably have to go, I agree there. It's probably Brown. You'd have to pry Hyman away from Babcock and Dubas' cold dead hands to get him. The whole organization loves him. He's not the most skilled guy, but he's the best example setting guy on the team. He sets the example that if you work hard, you'll get your chance. No matter your skill level. He won't be moved anytime soon.
