Habs offseason

1. It's not like Hoffman has a history of being great in the room to begin with.
2. You don't trade 3 draft picks just to get rid of a contract that is done at the end of the season. If Hoffman becomes a problem in the room just send him home and pay him out for this year and then be rid of his contract at the end of the season.

Rebuild Complete in 2025
1. The key point here is "if everyone hits on potential". Not everyone will. This a decent start of a lineup but it will be far from what the roster will look like when the rebuild is over.
2. Not to be overly analytical of an Armchair GM team but your lineup would need more balance with players sitting in the proper chairs. As an example, if RHP end up on the Habs 4th line then he would be in the wrong chair because he is not a 4th line type. RHP needs to grow into a consistent 2nd line winger type, otherwise he would not be a proper fit in a rebuilt lineup.

Habs
1. I think the Habs' only real chance to get rid of Hoffman will be at the tradeline. Getting rid of him off-season would be great, but I doubt it.
2. Why trade Evans? He has a reasonable contract, compared to many other players on the Habs. He is a solid bottom 6 guy and plays solid, quality minutes on shorthanded... not quire sure what the point is of simply dumping him off to WPG for a 7th rounder.

Something I hope
1. Neither of those guys are signing on with a rebuilding team with NO chance of sniffing the playoffs next season or the following season.
2. Why would the Habs sign two veteran players like this while in rebuilding mode... it makes no sense. If they are available, these are the guys you had to get you from playoff team to Cup contender not from bottom 5 to bottom 10 in the standings.
3. Why would MTL trade three draft picks to get rid of the two remaining years of Armia at $3.4mil. If getting rid of only $3.4mil on the books is going to cots you three pick, just don't make the trade.
$. Why the hell are you trading Jake Evans away for a 7th round draft pick. He's a solid bottom six forward for the Habs and only costs $1.7mil.

Trades require giving something up. We can’t trade Allen and get assets. Obviously if that was possible we would have to do it.</div></div>
I guess my point is that from my perspective, Monty is more valuable to the Habs right now than Lizotte and a 2nd round pick would be mostly because of the lack of goaltending depth in the organization and the fact that younger goalies are less likely to end up on the injured list than guys in their late 30s.

I mean, I'm not going to belabour some random trade you proposed on Armchair GM... I mean, whatever floats your boat. I just don't see the point of this trade from a Habs perspective given that one of their organizational weaknesses is quality young goaltending and you're proposing trading their best young goaltender and replacing him with a 38-year-old backup. You'd be better-off proposing a trade for Allen and replacing him with Halak than trading Montambeault.

I don't get your goaltending gymnastics here, it seems pointless to be honest. Keep the younger goalie during the rebuild. Why trade him for a bottom six forward and then replace him with a 73 year old backup goalie? I do think the PHI deal is plausible.

Trade Michkov
MTL would not take those two guys from PHI and, truth be told, I have no idea why the Flyers, in their current situation want any part of either Armia or Edmundson.
I like Askarov but NSH would be silly to trade him for Michkov for the same reason that MTL would be taking a big risk in picking him. I think the Habs are selecting a guy they think will be in the top half of their lineup in 2024-25.

The only way I can potentially see MTL making a trade like the one you are proposing is if Carlsson and Smith are off the board and the Habs think they can get a guy they really like at 10. I also get the sense that you threw in Gaudet only because he is from Quebec. It would likely take you a more highly ranked prospect than one who is not even in the Top 10 in the Blues prospect pool.

I do not get the fascination that Habs fans have with Dubois. I realize that he has said that he'd like to play with the Habs but the young man has already quit on two franchises and I'm not sure that's the type of guy you bring in to join a young core. He'll say all the right things and will be celebrated by Quebec media as the Habs' next French-Canadian superstar but when sh*t hits the fan, as it does for most players at different times in their careers, will he work through it or will he become a problem in the locker room and want to take his equipment and go home?

dream 2023-24 leafs
Oy... where to start:
Tarasenko and Dumba will be much more expensive than that to sign... neither of them will sign a "team friendly" deal just to sign with the Leafs. A few of the other UFA signings are also off.
It would be a shame to trade Matthews to CBJ if the Leafs want Bedard because CHI has the first overall pick and they are not picking anyone else than Bedard. That would mean that your Matthews deal would get the Leafs either Carlsson or Smith at #3.
I doubt that the Flyers will make this type of deal for Hart. At the very least they'll want to add a young defenseman with term that can play immediately and more.

If your first move is to sign Samsonov to an 8-year contract, you might not be GM for long.
I can tell you're trying to add grit to the lineup that will help them come playoff time. However, you'd be best-served adding that type of player at the deadline than over the summer.
I doubt Severson signs a new contract after a solid season for what amounts to a $500k raise per season...but, who knows.
Other than the unlikely Severson signing, you do nothing to improve the Leafs defense which is an area of need.

I have no idea why you suggest Toews to the Habs. I get that he is a great leader but that would only be good for the Habs if they were on the verge of reaching the playoffs and perhaps doing some damage in the playoffs. Montreal is still a few seasons removed from being anywhere close to a threat in the playoffs so bringing in a 35 year old who is two steps slower than he was in his prime is pointless.

Not sure PIT goes into full rebuild mode with Crosby still in the lineup. They may do a short-term re-tool, try to be competitive for another year or two and when Crosby packs it in, then you really blow it up.

I understand what you're trying to do with all these trades but go take one look at Habs picks between 2010 and 2018, only 11 of 62 picks in that period have played over 100 NHL games and 38 of them have never even played an NHL game and another 9 have played fewer than 50. I'm not sure having 14 picks in rounds 2-7 will do the Habs much good other than provide additional depth in Laval. They could get "lucky" and draft a guy in the middle rounds that surpasses all expectations but those picks are often just that, lucky. Even the Lightning passed on Kucherov in 2011 and passed on Brayden Point 3 times, picking two two guys that have never played an NHL game ahead of Point. If the Lightning truly knew those two guys would become the type of players they have become they would not have passed on both of them to pick the likes of Namestikov, Deangelo, Masin and McLeod.

I'd be really surprised if Poehling is the Habs 3rd line centre next season. He might be NHL ready but not sure he is ready to play the defensive stopper role expected from most 3rd line centres. I get the sense Evans will spend more time in that role. Poehling perhaps gets the 4th line centre job but I'd also not be surprised if he end up playin on the wing with the Habs bringing in a veteran centre for the 4th line like they did with Staal late in the just completed season.

What you are suggesting would not fly either, no team is mortgaging 5 straight years of 1st round picks in return for a guy who could conceivably sign elsewhere after those five years and leave you with a bare cupboard. That's part of the reason why you see so few offer sheets being made to elite RFA's in the league. That said, if I'm the Sabes, any conversations I have with MTL, a division rival, about Eichel starts with Suzuki. If Suzuki is not on the table, I'm not even having another conversation with Bergevin. Not saying Bergevin should do it, just saying that if I'm the Sabres, my ask for Eichel begins with Suzuki and with some other assets thrown in.

To answer your question, although I agree with you here... many people believe that Kulak is an option because SEA will not want to take on Price's contract and, similarly, that SEA might view both Byron and Drouin as both overpriced with their current contracts and that Danault will be more interested in signing with a contending team looking for a defensive stopper for a playoff run and might not sign with them.

I'm sure you meant a 2021 1st because 2020 was last year but, to your point, I believe Bergevin would be comfortable with SEA picking Drouin. This way Bergevin does not have to trade Drouin away and make the original Drouin/Sergachev trade look even worse because the Habs would not get much back in a trade for Drouin, at least not enough to satisfy Habs fans/media.

Question...your lineup has the Habs right up against the cap which isn't moving for at least a couple of years. In your scenario, at the end of the upcoming season, the Habs would have to find cap room to sign Suzuki and Romanov to bridge contracts, re-sign Strome your new 2nd line centre, re-sign two of your regular d-men, Chiarot and Kulak (...who would not re-sign for less than they are making now, especially Chiarot) and re-sign Kuemper because you traded away Primeau for him. The team you put together looks nice on paper but your plan past next year is a bit of a mess! :)

Fair enough...but $1.4mil isn't a **** load of money either, especially if the Habs have to make trades during the season to improve the team. Doable, certainly not easy. On that note, have a good one.

I would anticipate that for the Sabres to even consider trading Eichel to the Habs the return package would have to be centered around Suzuki. The Sabres are not trading a first line/franchise centre to a division rival for a middle six centre (KK) who has yet to prove he can be consistent and a bottom-six centre (Poehling) who may never evolve into anything more than a grinder. As for the draft picks, if Eichel helps the Habs become a consistent playoff contender those 1st round picks will be in the mid to high twenties where getting impact players, is very much hit and miss. I think the only way your trade happens is if Kevyn Adams is intoxicated when Bergevin calls.
