What would the Sabers have to do to get off of the friends and family plan
a first round pick would be a start. There's a 0% chance they trade one of their best trade chips for an aging overpaid D

I don't think this makes the Leafs any better. If they're trading Liljegren, it needs to be in a package to upgrade.

That's how negotiations typically work, expectation would be somewhere in the middle. I would assume Toronto's ask would be something like Liljegren or Niemela, maybe a B prospect and a 1st. Middle ground could be Niemela, 1st, Robertson, which I would be OK with.

high five for only the second person to actually answer the question instead of telling everyone how awesome or terrible Parayko is, or how dumb I am for suggesting theres a fit.
Personally I think that's way too much. Id be fine with Liljegren OR Niemela, but not both
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mediumyeet</b></div><div>I think a 1st + Minten type prospect + Liljegren probably gets the ball rolling but wouldn't get the deal done.</div></div>
I appreciate the answer, and thank you for actually answering the question. I think that would be huge haul, and I don't think asking for a team's best forward and best defensive prospect, PLUS a 1st round pick to start is reasonable at all

I think moving Brodie out helps the cap, and they need a RHD over a LHD that struggles on his off side. in any case, 5ish million needs to go the other way, or move out in another deal. No way the blues retain salary on a 7 year deal

This still makes too much sense
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>swinny</b></div><div>As I have said, Oleksiak maybe a slight downgrade, but brings and element sorely lacking on the Leafs blueline with term. Term. Key phrase bud. Term..... and it's a good contract to boot. I ask - who would you rather tangle with Tkachuk? Oleksiak or Brodie? I digress.
Seems a lot of people don't like Tolvanen. That is fine. For me, he looks to round out at a fine top 6 forward who can hit can get in dirty areas..... something again, the Leafs long term lack.
Neimela is not anywhere near NHL ready. 2 years away. Even then, for me, he remains an enigma. Solid first year in the AHL granted.
To call this laughable is simply short sighted. Leafs will have a hard time meeting Nylander's demands. Oleksiak, Liligren and Timmins are just fine for me as a RD in 2024-25.
Eberle may go away, but it leaves the Leafs with serious flexibility to fill the roster out via free agency amd the Marlies. Knies likely goes into the top 6. I can see Tolvanen playing his way there.... with like $20 million to spend.
If that is the case, is it so laughable?</div></div>
Yes. It's absolutely still laughable even with your "justification"

This trade is laughable. Why would the Leafs move an elite forward, excellent defence prospect close to NHL ready, and a solid top 4 defensive D man for this?

You know it's not mandatory to submit every roster you do right? Why would the leafs do either of these deals? Nylander is worth far more than what youve traded him for, and theres a 0% chance they package Timmins to move Muzzin. He's on LTIR, this makes 0 sense

AM34 to AZ
Leafs say no to this all day long. Why would they trade their #1C and 1B goalie for picks? The Leafs are not even close to being in a rebuild. If they trade Matthews, they will be looking for established NHL players under contract and/or can't miss young players. Think Keller and Cooley. Something like Keller, Hayton and their 2023 1st, or Keller, Cooley and a future 2nd. That, and I doubt Matthews wants anything to do with AZ at the moment, its growing likely they wont even be there a year from now

AM34 Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KINGS67</b></div><div>I think so too.
Trading a player like Mathews is very hard to do due to the fact his trade value is almost impossible to meet. So if a trade ever were to happen I’d expect something close to this but then will kinda fall short. Only so many teams can meet the trade demand.
Anyways. Both Clarke and Byfield won’t be in a trade together it’s one or the other imo with other top prospects/picks. But LA won’t trade for Mathews. They’d try and sign him instead which is a strong possibility. If TOR ends up resigning him great.</div></div>
I disagree. If the Leafs are willing to retain salary, which they would be I'm sure if they were getting cheaper cost controlled NHL ready (or close to it) talent in return. At that point, Matthews is an all world talent at just over 5 million, potentially even less if a 3rd team is in the mix. Plus, the exclusive negotiating rights for the full season. A team like LA would be smart to make a deal like this. The location is close to home for him so the chance of re-signing is high, and for at least one season/playoff they could ice Matthews/Kopitar/Danault down the middle

AM34 Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MMB</b></div><div>If Mathews is good; then why are you trading him? You really want all of the Kings best assets at a somewhat cheap price of one year of Mathews.</div></div>
The only way the Leafs entertain trading Matthews is if he refuses to sign an extension. If that's the case, they will trade him at the draft this year before his NTC kicks in. Trading him is not a want, its a need rather than lose him for nothing

Imagine how good our squad will be after two Stanley Cup campaigns, in which Brandt Clarke will have played at least one, and the only significant players who'll be expiring are Viktor Arvidsson and Matt Roy (highly likely, along with Anze, to re-up if we sign AM).</div></div>
Hey, if you don't want one of the best pure goal scorers on the planet at just over $5 million and exclusive negotiating rights for his future, I'm sure just about any other team will give up a similar or better package. You're right, retaining Arvidsson and Roy is probably more important
