The lines Id like to see
Good lines...in 1 or 2 year
KK is hardly good enough to make the line-up, so far this year
He needs to be stronger on his legs, he needs to become a better skater not faster ...just stronger
I think it will take 2-3 years until he's a top 6 player

very good trade, Toronto would improve by a lot. however Habs have to say no since Petry has become our number one and I think he could be a top 3 defenseman for another 4-5 years

That's a hard one. Not a bad trade, value wise, However you are sacrificing now for later. I guess you've given up on contending while Price is still in Prime.

Drouin is on 3rd line now . The way the habs are built they won't have a real 1st line to contend but they might have 3 very good second line. I think Bergevin will try signing Petry for 3 years or less.

If Hall Is Willing To Sign
I made a few roster similar to yours so I share your search for a power forward like Hall. But the problem is you don't have money left for the year after. You have Danault, Tatar, Gallagher Petry Armia going UFA and Poehling, KK, Mete, Fleury going RFA. That's almost half of the team !
My conclusion : unless Bergevin gets rid of the approx 12 M$ given to Alzner and Weber, we are in trouble and won't be able to add that star player to contend. Tha's why I don't mind if MB give away a no.1 pick to get rid of Alzner.
I might be wrong though. Would be curious to see your roster for 2021-22.

Not sure of that, cause had they won the Aho offer Sheet, they would have lost their 1st pick
I hope Bergevin does not take the draft being in Montreal into consideration, it's hard enough for habs to get a trade done, if there's an opportunity they should go for it. Draft Day in June is not that big of an event, even in Montreal, ...people are at the beach !
Unless this year is really bad ! then yes, draft day will be important

Next Year
i like your 3rd line. 2nd line lacks toughness big time imo. I think to be any good in playoffs you need to trade one of the smaller guys for a big scoring winger. Again for strenght , I would put Armia back in the line-up. The guys i'm willing to trade : Suzuki, Caufield, KK, Drouin, Gallagher. I like those guys a lot but if that can get us someone like Radulov, Hall, Laine, Josh Anderson, Mantha... I think our top 9 would be complete. Then we could start working on getting a top pair LHD.

Alzner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goldninja0</b></div><div>Not really any point trading him because of lots of cap space</div></div>
Why wait till last minute to add cap space. Look at Subban, Wether you like him or not, New Jersey got a top 3 defenseman almost for free cause they had cap space
I'm sure next july UFA's are already thinking about teams they would like to play for. If you already have cap space, UFA have more chance of targeting you. (I'm thinking of taylor Hall here ...)
Another reason : if I got this correctly, buying out Alzner next summer barely helps as it would still count for 3M+ the 1st year of the buyout. So ALzner contract will impact us for much too long. My message to Bergevin : Get rid of it !

My favourite moment was back in 2013 when Ottawa played Montreal and had the whole physical advantage. There was 5 fights on the ice at the same time and Ottawa won them all</div></div>
Yeah I remember playing against Senators when Chris Neil was in the line-up. That guy was scary. A raging bull dog on the ice. Glad he'S gone, though I think the habs need a guy like that on our fourth line.
We also need more grit on the top 6. Actually only one player is missing Danault-Tatar-Gally line is ok already cause they play big. But put a Josh Anderson with Domi and Drouin, ,I think that line would jump 1 or 2 step. Is Bennett good enough offensively to play with ultra-fast players like Domi and DRouin. I don'Lt know him well enough.
So yeah, add a chris neil and a Josh ANderson in the line-up and we can play playoff hockey. With the actual line-up we couldn't compete with teams like St-Louis, Washington, etc

From habs perspective, I totally get what you are aiming for. That would be a perfect line, Kadri providing the toughness that a Drouin-Domi-Suzuki line would lack. Habs really miss 1 top 6 forward that has both toughness and talent. Could Poehling be that guy next year (Domi - Poelhing - Suzuki) ?

trading a teams most valuable player ep 1
Wow, that's a very good one. As a habs fan, I would not do it but I got to say it's a close call cause Laine is a hell of a shooter. Here's my 2 reasons why :
CAP HIT : I made a lot of projections for 2021-22 and I was pretty surprised to find out we will only have space for one more high-end player (one laine, one werenzki, or one Taylor Hall). Initially I thought we could afford 2 stars (a 1st line winger and a 1st pair LHD), but we can't really. Unless losing all 3 of Danault, Gallagher and Tatar.
All this to say that each penny you can save is worth gold.
Laine is already aiming for a 8,9,10 M$ contract.
KK, on the other hand, has 2 more years at entry level salary. KK is very young and I can see KK reaching 45-50 point this year and 60 points next year. This means that his next contract will be either a shorter transition contract at 4-5 $ M or a longer contract but not higher than 8$ M (since he will not have reach his peak yet).
2) ATTITUDE : This is only an opinion but I did not hear anybody praise Laine for work ethic and he is not described as a had working player. I don't know how hard-working KK is but he really look like he's having fun on the ice.
So that's my reasons, but it's a tough call cause I can really picture cross passes from Drouin or Domi right on Laine 's stick and you can imagine the rest...

Projecting The 2021-2022 Habs Roster
Very good lineup for forwards, especially because you have 3 lines that can score and because you kept our core veterans in regards of attitude and effort (Danault-Gally, Tatar)
also you're within cap ceiling and have space to sign Suzuki following year.
IMO your lineup still missing the last piece of the puzzle to contend : either a high-end puck moving left defenseman (Werenski, McAvoy level) or a Physical winger (Hall, Kakko, Radulov type of player)
Ideally both but cap limit will not allow it. But we'll see: maybe Mete can reach one step higher and habs could contend with this line-up.

That is building the team with the draft.
I don’t know why all that hate for him. For first time since the mid 90’s habs look in really good posture for futur year</div></div>
I agree with 90 % of what you're saying. The complain I hold against Bergevin is exactly what you mentionned in your first lines. ''A GM will not say openly that he will miss the playoffs !''
That's exactly the problem. Rangers have openly said they were rebuilding. Look at who they got :KAKKO. LOS ANGELES admitted they were rebuilding : they will get the top picks for a few years. If Montreal had the courage to really rebuild, they could have drafted one or two Dahlin, Rantanen, Marner, Heiskanen etc. over the last few years
One more reason for tanking : top UFA seem to always want to play for the same 4-5 teams and Montreal is not one of them. So how do you get the all-star players.
I wish the NHL would change the rules about draft selection because now the losers are the winners. Look at Toronto. Why are they contenders now ?
So until the rules change, the recipe is too contend 4-5 years, than loose 4-5 years. So let'S do it play Suzuki on power play, Poelhing on 2nd line with Drouin and Domi...ask Lekhonen to go all the way for offense (not defense), keep Mete on 1st, and think : dernière for Lafrenière

Unless he'S played with …...the right guys. Look who Vegas plays with Pacioretty : Statsny (described by forecaster as ''Solidly built, he usually plays bigger than his 6-0 frame…) and Stone ( 6'4'', 220 lbs).
Drouin needs a player strong on the boards that can retrieve the puck for him. Then he can do magic. In our current line-up, the 2 that could play this role are Armia and Gallagher. I would try Drouin - Domi - Armia until we acquire a better winger
In a line like : Drouin - Domi - Stone : Drouin could get 80 points/year

We dont need to overpayspend 4 Laine then screw ourselves later with cap issues
Your plan requires great faith in our prospect pool. Remember, there's no Kakko, Hugues, Dalhin, Shevnikov, MAtthews, MArner etc in our prospect pool. Today Habs are an average team (ranking between 10-20). With our prospects, in 5 years we will also be a good team, but an average 10 to 20 team. That's just the real projection.
I'm for you plan ONLY if the next 2-3 years we try to tank and draft really really high. The only way to be so bad is to trade 2 or 3 players amongst Tatar, Danault, Petry, Gallagher. Any UFA you're NOT thinkin of resigning in 2 years, trade now. And replace them with the kids , starting this year. Lehkonen gets full ice time. Put Suzuki with Domi, not with Byron. KK with Drouin, not Lehk.
In that case, yes i'm for your plan. Either going for it, or completing the rebuild, but if we go only halfway, we'll still have an average team. And one more thing...hope that
Primeau is good cause Price will be on the decline in 4-5 years (37 years old)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jpsnow13</b></div><div>Habs are going to loose Petry to free agency if they don't trade him at the deadline. No way he would accept 3x5 on his last big contract. Also Habs are deep at RHD so it would be smart to spend elsewhere.
Danault and Domi's contracts could also be underevaluated if they continue to improve next season.
Since MTL is not popular on UFAs market, I think you should take the saved up money on Petry to overpay a little bit Gallager. His actual contract is a steal and he earned a bit of recognition for his sacrifice. Term will be the hard part to agree on because he is injury prone.
Do thoses modifications and then we will work on the next Step: Trade for a ******' elite LHD. ;)
Good work though. +1</div></div>
thanks for the suggestions. I guess we could keep Gallagher if he's not asking for too much and too long
I'll work on something. He would be 29. So a 4-5 year contract could work. As much as i like him, I Can't imagine him a top 6 forward past 33 .
I think Petry could be happy with 5 millions /3 years since he will be 33 , but I'll look into Edler 's contract and a few other older def UFA as a comparative
