I think I agree with you, especially as I don't think Mantha is done. If I could just find a home for Hoffman, I'd take Mantha in a heartbeat, assuming the Caps would take a vending machine and a few pop tarts as compensation.

If Guhle's on the table, then the #1 (FLA) can't be. I don't love it, but I'd have to consider it. Straight up, that would be a reasonable trade as long as WPG is looking to start rebuilding. I'd want to be sure I have a home for D-VO lined up as well.

I see no harm in the Dvorak-Beauvillier trade. It's low risk both ways. Dvorak would be useful for the Canucks and Beauvillier might benefit from being back home.

The critique on Hart isn't really fair however, it's more the team has been extremely inconsistent, not him. save for the 21-22 when he was pretty bad, he has been above average to spectacular in his other 4 years of play.</div></div>
Thanks. As I said, I don't really know enough about Hart to know WHY he has struggled. I only know that he HAS struggled. Will a change of scenery help? I hope so. But coming to Montreal (also quite inconsistent) and having to battle for time with a fan favourite (Montembeault) mightn't be the best place for Hart.

There's one scenario under which I'd disagree that it would be easy. If the Habs had a second trade for Karlsson lined up. Karlsson comes in with an $8M cap hit for 4 years. The Habs could eat $4M of that, at which point you'd have to wonder what the return could be from a serious contender for Karlsson at $4M for 4 years.
It does require the Habs put away the PLD folly and focus on building a team with kids on their ELCs.

I am with you here. It's not a great trade for either side. Philly doesn't need LHDs. In Montreal, Montembeault has shown he deserves a chance to become a legit #1, and Jake Allen is the perfect "big brother" for him. I don't know enough about Carter Hart beyond that his inconsistency has been a problem in Philly. The Habs need to stabilize things in net, not take on another project.

I don't disagree on Edmundson, though I would argue that the better reason is that he's not what the Canucks need right now unless the locker room needs leadership. The Habs have a bunch of good LDs in the 22- to 25-year-old range. If there's an appetite for Beauvilier in Montreal (to replace Drouin?) maybe there's something there.

The trade is about as good as the Jets can expect. But why do it?
My assessment of Beck is very similar to yours, and there's already Dach emerging, which begs the question why the Habs would want to blow the bank on PLD, especially if it doesn't include moving Dvorak out. And what about Monahan?

You saw the offer, right? The compensation would be a second-rounder. Now, the Jets would probably be tempted to match, but they then can't trade him until after the season, so not trade deadline bonanza. It's nasty, but it just might work -- even if it's just a threat.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Koskinen_The_Great</b></div><div>That is the only thing stopping a MTL offer sheet in July with Winnipeg not opting for team arbitration. The Habs need to shed cap to fit in PLD with raises due next year and cap overages as theyll be in LTIR again with the Price contract along with the cap still in limbo for 2024.
2025 is where all the bad money comes off the books. Armia or Dvorak must be dealt in any PLD trade to make the salary work, the fact that Jets fan hasn't understood this on a salary cap site is wild!</div></div>
The offer sheet makes it easy. But even with PLD, the Habs are likely to be a lottery team in 2024, so do you really want to risk that pick being a top one and going to the Jets? It's a conundrum.

Sorry, but you're mistaken: two first rounders (Mesar and a late first in 2023) is reasonable compensation for a player the Jets CAN'T sign and who has jerked over the management of two years in six years. Norlinder will find a home. Dvorak is a decent roster player, but ... yes ... overpaid. Still, the cap isn't going to be a problem in WPG for a long time.

Kind of matters what 5-6 teams, doesn't it? FWIW, I am not a PLD fan, so I am more than happy with the current rebuild plan. If I were going to give away picks and prospects for anyone, he's far from my first choice.

Harris doesn't have much, if any, value league wide and no value to Winnipeg.
Beck is an average at best B level prospect.
Florida's first is pretty much a 2nd.
Trades don't work like that. It won't be a collection of pieces that you couldn't care less about losing because they don't have much value along with cap dumps and low value picks. It will cost Montreal something they don't want to lose.
Granted Montreal doesn't have much better that they can offer, so they probably won't be competitive with the other offers Winnipeg receives.
Why would Winnipeg accept a poor value offer when they easily get more?</div></div>
You're not wrong that this deal would be insufficient this summer UNLESS PLD tells the Jets that the only team he'll sign with long-term is MTL. If he indicates otherwise and 5-6 teams are encouraged to bid, there'll be a decently robust auction. That said, you are wrong about two things: Jordan Harris does have value league-wide at this point (though LHD is not a weakness in WPG) ; and Beck is no longer considered a "B" prospect. In his Draft+1 year, Beck was listed in THN's Future Watch Top 100 (#84) and has been in the 20s for most mock re-drafts of the '22 class. By scoring 16 points in 22 playoff games while centring the Pete's second line and handling PK duties, he has solidified his position as a rising prospect and a future NHLer.

Goodrow's contract is better than andersons.
MTL is the one who needs to pay in that scenario.
Remove the first, mtl retains to balance the contracts, and its an even flip. But the point of these types of trades isn't to find "balance' its to "trade win", which isn't what usually happens in the NHL.</div></div>
I disagree with your view of what constitutes a "win" in a trade. The Habs and Rangers need different things at this point. The Rangers were showing signs of being a decent team but aren't really ready to beat the Hurricanes, nor the Devils. Do I think they need to move Goodrow? But I think he's a bottom-6 forward. Anderson is more of a middle-6, capable of playing up and down the roster. If the Rangers re-sign Kane, this is a moot question, because Anderson becomes redundant and Goodrow remains a fixture lower down the roster. If Kane isn't back, then Anderson is a good option that helps the Rangers to overcome bigger, faster teams.
Given the team needs, Goodrow for Anderson would be great, even up, assuming Kane doesn't stay with the Rangers. Otherwise, it's a non-starter.

I don't understand the Byfield move for either team, especially if there's any real interest in getting PLD. Byfield is another Dach, which isn't at all a bad thing, but the Habs are getting to the point of having gone from no centres to too many, especially if you factor in Beck and, if they can keep him around, Monahan.
You'd have to sweeten the Boeser trade substantially, but you might be able to keep those pieces together and add a draft pick or Ylonen/Struble-level prospect. While I'd hate to see him go, Xhekaj could anchor this deal nicely.

That's a lot of gymnastics, but what's the plan for #8 and #9. If you're willing to give up all those pieces, why not see if Harris, Kidney (or Beck) and #5 can't anchor a move up from #5 to #2 or #3?

What you posted initially was not a low-ball offer, but mightn't have been exactly what Anaheim needs. Dach (who was a 3rd overall) and the #5 for Fantilli is a very fair offer. If you wanted to sweeten it, the Habs #37 pick would be more than enough. Beyond that, you're taking one step up and one step back.

That's the opposite of the KK offer sheet. KK was paid a ridiculous $6M+ for one year, which would have handcuffed the Habs the next year because they then would have had to give KK a raise on that to hold his rights. Instead, KK took the $6M and then signed an extension for $4M/ year, which might still be too generous.
