<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jake_H</b></div><div>Right? I'm not trying to say Maatta is an elite defensemen or that he's not a bit pricy for what he brings, but everyone is so fixated on the one bad year in five he's had, plus the bad moves that stick out for all defensemen if you're staring. He's averaged 0.34 points per game over his career minus the atrocious 2016 season, and here's a list of players he beat in shot attempts at 5v5 over the last three years: Shattenkirk, Schmidt, Karlsson, Trouba, Kelfbom, Hamhuis, Cole, Schultz, Brodie, Ekblad, Suter, Carlson, Vlasic, Provorov, Vatanen, Dumba, Brodin, Barrie, and McDonagh. Now almost all of those guys have a heavier workload and tougher assignments, but that doesn't change the fact that Maatta has a top 50 SAT differential the last few seasons (including his garbage year). He's a good defenseman who isn't a perfect fit but is still valuable to the team and system.</div></div>

Oh, I pay attention. How many times must you see him getting blown by or making piss poor decisions with the puck when under pressure to realize he's not as good as you think? And for 4mil per year, it makes it worse. Maybe his salary is my focal point bc I expect more for that price. Imo he's a 3mil player and yes that 1mil makes a difference in a cap restricted league. That list of defensemen isn't a good comparison bc a lot of them are offensively minded and a few are straight trash and/or are on awful teams.
You don't classify Maatta as an elite defenseman yet you lumped into a group of defenseman where around half are to try n prove a point. Then say he won't get pushed out for a warm body (Duchesne isn't a warm body). Apparently you didn't the trade. All you Yinzers are ridiculous with the hometown views on players. Every single Pittsburgher adores all their players no matter how good or bad they are. You guys probably all have a Craig Adams bobblehead on your mantels. Maatta is the second coming of Rob Scuderi. Fyi, I don't think Hagelin, Johnson or Oleksiak are worth their contracts either so bring all the hate ya want, It'll be more of a proving point.

I don't understand this post no matter the title. Most of the trades are a downgrade and Cammalleri is ancient. Who rebuilds by signing old has beens and trading away their core players? By the time the Pens are in rebuild mode, those core players will be retired or so ineffective their value wouldn't even merit a trade worthwhile. Their farm system is pretty lackluster as well so unless they start the "rebuild" now and by doing that it means to stop trading away draft picks for playoff rentals. I would be more concerned with how to build the current team since they are in contention every year and doing so without stripping the cupboards bare. They were pretty injury sticken last year at the end of the season and during playoffs. Dont think much is needed but there are some glaring issues that need addressed. Crosby needs a permanent RW. He had 6 or so rotating the past season and a half. Obviously nobody on the current roster can stick on his wing aside from Jake G. Murray needs a solid backup. He showed he can perform when it matters but I don't think he's ready just yet to carry the workload as a fulltime starter yet hoping his personal issues (fathers death) was the main reason behind his subpar season. The defense is a concern as well. Everyone on here loves Maatta but I see him as a liability with his piss poor skating and puck decision ability, or lack of. Oleksiak is fine as a bottom pairing dman and JJ could be a hit or miss. The Pens have a recent history of rejuvenating dmens careers but JJ, by what everyone says, is a lost cause. Letang needs sheltered minutes for health reasons and the other pairing either need to step up or be utilized more effectively. Not sure about Brassard either. He should thrive as the 3rd line center, especially with Kessel on his wing, but what I watched of him last year with the Pens, I was less than impressed eventhough his reported injury may be the culprit of his performance. Another issue is was their even strength scoring, which was awful considering the talent they have up front. They rely too much on the powerplay. I think they have a 3-4 year window to capture championships before they go in a decline and start a fire sale.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hamburglar44</b></div><div>It's obviously you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about so this here, will be the only response to this because your statement deserves no more.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Chigurrhh</b></div><div>There's is a lot wrong with what you are saying here.

1. Hagelin would not re-sign for a vert minimum. He's a good NHL player that a team will overpay.

2. Right handed d Man for the bottom pairing? Oleksiak plays the right side and the team just gave him three years. Schultz and Letang have the other two RD spots.

3. Maatta should be the focal point of any Pens trades? Why would they give up an affordable, young 2nd pairing guy coming off a good season? This means giving Jack Johnson or Oleksiak more minutes and just makes the defense worse. Yes, he's slow. But he's better than Oleksiak and Johnson.</div></div>

First off, Hagelin is not a "good" NHL player. He has speed, yes, but that will be going away soon. He's a good penalty killer, yes, but that will also not be for long due to him slowing down with age. Plus, you should never pay a player for special teams play imo. He is not top 6 forward. He generates scoring and points like a bottom 6 player. By no means is he worth the 4 million he makes per year. You say teams will overpay him. I would love for you to name a single NHL team that will pay him the same contract is he getting now or better yet, give him a raise.

Secondly, Oleksiak plays the left side. He was the bottom pairing left defenseman last season. Chad Ruhdweil (spelling) was the bottom pairing right defenseman. Most NHL teams play their defenseman based on the handedness.

Lastly, Maatta has terrible foot speed period. It's not even up for debate how slow he is. His foot speed translates to poor decisions with puck. He avoids contact at all costs. After all his medical issues his first 2 seasons, he has never recaptured his offensive abilities and imo, he has peaked. He doesn't fit into the style the Penguins play. He needs to get sheltered minutes and if Jack Johnson is as bad as people say, it doesn't make sense to have 7.5 million dollar 5th n 6th defenseman pairing. Take advantage of him being a former 1st round pick with youth and get something for him while you can. 4 million for Maatta is a lot if you compare him to similar skilled defenseman throughout the league.
