No, Trotz already has too many players to stifle prospects with. I’m not against having veteran depth guys, but we already have too many.

I'd honestly be fine keeping Johnston as a scratch. If Martin or Clutterbuck get injured, or just need a maintenance day, he'd be useful for that.
But anything outside the 4th line makes no sense to me.

Palmieri Deadline
I’m fine giving up a 1st for Palmieri as a rental, with conditional picks if he re signs or if the Isles win the Cup. Past that, no prospects. I see this kind of trade as extremely similar to the Pageau trade.

Completely agreed. Two goal scorers off of last postseason’s highly successful 2nd line and a former first round pick is a lot to give up, even for a 1st line winger.

Yandle but why
See, I trust Lou enough were if he wanted to sign Yandle to a one year deal for a low cap hit, I'd trust him. Sure, the guy has warts, but we are kiiinda desperate to fix our power play (granted I think the solution is letting Wahlstrom play, but that's neither here nor there), so a small risk would be understandable. I wasn't happy with the Andy Greene trade, but I was happy to eat my words on it.
But trading for him at THAT cap hit? That'd be even harder to move than Ladd. Hell no. It'd be an awful trade, I'm glad we passed on it.

Saving lou and trotz
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ForsbergForVezina</b></div><div>Wahlstrom should get a shot now, absolutely. Sounds like he had a good camp and his style is just what we need. Considering his upside is probably higher than Bellows' at this point, I'd rather see him in the lineup if I had to choose between the two, but I'll take what I can get at this point.
I don't love Leo; I'd rather not have him (and his cap hit) than keep him, but he's not a horrible piece. He's okay defensively and can chip in offense here. If he's complimenting his linemates, I think he's serviceable. 2nd line should stay, you're right, although if Wahlstrom or Bellows starts playing better than expected somehow, I think moving one of them up and Bailey down is worth considering</div></div>
I think you keep that 2nd line together as long as it keeps producing. If Wahlstrom proves he deserves more ice time, I’d put him with Barzal on the 1st line, then see if Lee or Eberle would be better suited on the 3rd line. Also the idea of Lee or Eberle playing sheltered minutes while they and Pageau skate around third pairings just sounds fun.

Wahlstrom Bellows
I've heard it'll be Johnston-Pageau-Wahlstrom. Yeah, I want Bellows-Pageau-Wahlstrom too, but I could see Johnston doing a good job creating space for Wahlstrom and Pageau and Wahlstrom being able to create and set up each other's passes. Plenty to be optimistic about.

Why I Really Miss Towes
Agreed. But I think if Trotz lets Wahlstrom play, it'll even out in the long term. Wahlstrom's deep stats during last years' call up were phenomenal. I could also see Dobson getting a "full" season to work with could make him the next 2nd pairing offensive defenseman. There's also a good chance that, down the road, either Wilde or Bolduc become what Toews could be.
In short, I agree it was a bad move, but a lot could happen that could keep them Cup Contenders.

I'd love to see my dream line come to reality. Gotta think the Isles aren't going to be as good as last year with the vets only getting older and Toews off in Colorado. With no cap space left, the only way to improve will be to let the kids play. Run straight into that tall grass until we've fed Wahlstrom enough Pidgeys to win the Calder.

New York Islanders signed Mathew Barzal (3 Years / $7,000,000 AAV)
To those saying Barzy should've gotten his big payday deal now, would you rather cash in before or after you win hardware and put you your first 90-100 point season? Sure, he hasn't done it yet, but it's not like a lot of NHLers doubt he's capable of it.

Martin deal is fine
Totally agree. If we didn't sign Martin, we'd have to skate someone else, someone who'd probably make around .9 aav for his cap hit. Meaning, this trade really just costs up .6 aav. And this contract would be very easy to bury or buy out. This isn't another Ladd contract, this isn't even a Komarov contract. It's a contract that lets us keep a locker room favorite around for the ever-shortening window for a Cup run. And if this contract turns out bad, we bury him and it's a weird little footnote.
Remain calm. Barzal should sign soon, we're all just impatient.

Lou what are you doing
Actually, I don’t really have a problem with this. Most ELCs that actually play in the NHL are .9 ish aav, a 1.5 aav isn’t too big an increase on that. And as a 4th liner, he’s not really blocking the way for prospects. And if the cap hit really becomes a problem, it’d be easy to trade away for mid-late pick.

Matt Martin on the 3rd line? I’m no fan of that. At least switch him with Koivula.
I’m hoping we pass on Greene, he was awesome for us last year, but really slowed down in the last two series. I’d like to see Aho at long last get his shot.
All this said, Trotz will probably do more or less what you have here.

Good. Wahlstrom looked awesome in his call up, even if he never scored. I'd love to see what he's capable of now that the 3rd line has an actual scorer on it.

With The Season Now In Sight
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ForsbergForVezina</b></div><div>Trading Varlamov for a forward would be great, but it's gotta be the right deal. Assuming Sorokin comes in and is amazing, we'll be paying a lot for our goaltending in the coming years, so trading Varly getting a replacement backup for cheap is definitely something they should look into when the time is right. I doubt they trade him this year, just because having two awesome goalies is always a strength, but I do agree that should be a priority.</div></div>
I’ve been wondering if Lou brought in Schneider for that reason. Keep the declining goalie a pair of great coaches to give him a facelift, then come TDL, he’s ready to at least be back up.
Granted, I don’t think any of this is a good idea, but I’ve been wondering how Schneider fits in to Lou’s plan.

With The Season Now In Sight
My guess is we hover just above Wild Card qualification, 4th or 5th in the East, until the TDL comes, then we trade either a prospect and an expendable player (Sorokin could make Varlamov obsolete) for a winger for Barzal. There were so many 1 year deals this offseason, I’d bet Lou is planning on trading for one of those guys once that team falls out of playoff contention.

My guess is Barzal takes a Bridge deal. He’ll get a bigger contract down the road and I get a feeling they only have another two or three years before their core of Nelson/Bailey/Eberle start losing their touch. Sure, they’re not stars, but they’re great depth players and the Isles rely on them heavily as a group. If Barzal wants a Cup, he’d be better off leaving a bit more cap space for Lou to work with this TDL.

I dunno if Trotz will give that young RFA you just signed a shot. Pretty unproven and Komarov has been playing center for longer. Not saying that RFA shouldn’t get the spot, he should, but we all know how Lou and Trotz operate.

New but have they Improved
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>There’s no reason for WPG to trade ehlers. At the end of the day, we don’t have cap space and we need players producing on ELC. From what I’ve heard (no source, sorry), Ladd has drawn zero interest from around the league, even as a cap dump with a considerable pick or prospect bribe. Ladd has to realize he’s never playing in the NHL again, so Lou might be able to get him to LTIRetire. And if that happens, then we can pursue a forward either in IFA or through a trade. But we’ll see.
