Where do they finish
If they can stay healthy, they finish 2nd or 3rd in the Metro and win at least one round in the playoffs. Dark Horse team to win the Cup, especially if Wahlstrom, Engvall and/or Dobson make big steps forward.
If they continue to be plagued by injury, they sneak into the Wild Card round before being put down without ceremony. Isles would then have to consider beginning the rebuild, and we may see Lou agree to part ways with the organization.

As an Isles fan, I’m pretty happy with that trade, though my guess would be that Lou would want the first and second round picks in different years.

I feel like he’s gotta be getting close. He looked good last season in BP, and I could see Engvall and Holmstrom both being good fast fits for his linemates. Both are fast like him, but they have a bit more size to make room for him.
I could see us making a separate UFA signing for a more 3C. Seattle needs forwards bad, they don’t have a 3C to spare.

Yeah, I know he said that, but he’ll still need to fill Bailey’s old spot somehow. Also, running it back with Mayfield doesn’t solve any of our problems; we already have plenty of physicality.

trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tm0000</b></div><div>I think the biggest problem with this is that I believe he and Barzal don't like each other. After he left LI, Tavares referred to Barzal as "the kid that won the Calder" like he couldn't be bothered to remember his name, and Barzal made a comment about how he didn't want to be with a team for nine years and only make the playoffs twice.</div></div>
Like I said, I fully acknowledge that this wouldn’t happen. Just fun to think about from a story line perspective. It just has the feel of a sports movie.
But from a locker room chemistry perspective, you’re probably right. It wasn’t just Barzal, a lot of guys in the locker room felt rightfully betrayed by JT. I think it helps explain why Barzal, such a dedicated “pass first” forward, got a hat trick in one of his first games against the Leafs after JT left. He was out for blood.

trade
If either Toronto or the Isles won the Cup after that trade, the NHL would collapse in on itself from sheer irony.
I doubt Toronto does this, even if what they essentially gain here is cap space. Tavares’ production has been about point per game in Toronto. That said, Pageau and whatever defenseman they sign in Free Agency with the cap space they gained would probably get the Leafs closer to a Cup than Tavares has.
From the Isles’ point of view, I think we’re desperate enough for offense to try this. Sure, Tavares’ contract is too high for what he does, but we’re going to probably have to rebuild in 2-3 years anyway. Might as well leave it all out on the table until then.
Yeah, yeah, it won’t happen. But who cares. It was fun tk think about:

Odds of Zach Parise returning next year are low, and we’re going to have to make some kind of attempt at replacing his production on the third line.

Isles are in a rough cap position, though I’d love to add Labanc. How’d you feel about taking back Josh Bailey’s contract? If the Isles would have to throw in an additional pick, I think it’d still be worth it.

My Preferred Lines for Game 1

I can't see him drawing a spot in the lineup for Game 1. If Bolduc doesn't play well tonight, maybe there's a change for Game 2.</div></div>
Fair enough. In my mind, Bolduc hasn’t been transformative enough on the Power Play to be worth the risk defensively. But if Lambert’s been skating Bolduc over Wotherspoon consistently throughout the back half of the season, there’s probably a good reason for it that I’m to Armchair to appreciate.

Playoff lines
My guess is they fit Bailey in there somewhere. Maybe they scratch Clutterbuck or Martin and have Fasching on the 4th line.
As for the Top 6, I think that’s the right way to line them up. Barzal and Horvat have shown great chemistry in the small sample size they’ve had and Nelson, Palmieri and Engvall have both looked hot enough lately where I think Lee can be spared for the top line.
I wish we had Wahlstrom back, Parise is relied on far too heavily for our secondary scoring. Ah well.

All jokes aside, I’d love to acquire either Chychrun or Kaner. Chychrun would finally give us a great puck moving D and Kaner next to Barzal would be extremely fun to watch.

Selling for Futures
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>I'd rather keep Odelus and swap in Salo, but I don't really see the need for Leivo and I'm not a big fan of sending out *another* 1st round pick. It's the type of trade where I'd roll my eyes and go "predictable Lou" but if VT would be open to signing a shorter-term, higher AAV contract that doesn't kill the cap I don't think I'd lose sleep over it.</div></div>
That all makes sense. My real objection to STL fans over the price of Tarasenko is they keep insisting on sign and trade level prices in a scenario where he’s likely a pure rental. Now, if Tank signs at a reasonable price with wherever he ends up, I do think he’s worth a late 1st round pick, a 2nd rounder and some B and C prospects. But my guess is Tank wants to cash in, and SOME team will be desperate enough to sign him for 7.5-8m in UFA. He’s got a Cup, he might as well cash in.

Selling for Futures
I feel like I’m in the minority of Isles fans here, but this isn’t a hard pass for me. For me, it’d depend on whether or not Tarasenko is willing to extend at a reasonable price. If he comes extended anywhere around 6m aav, I’d do this trade. Bailey’s contract isn’t worth his production, and giving up a 1st and a 2nd to switch out a bad contract for a good one (Odelius is behind an LHD logjam and Newkirk is a depth prospect for sure) is worth it to me.
Now, my guess is Tarasenko does NOT extend at that low of a price (though given his age and injury history, that’s what I think he’d be worth), so without that favorable extension, I don’t do this deal. But I do think there’s something to this deal.

Assuming this run continues
Only way trading for Meier would make sense from an money perspective is if they found a way to offload Bailey’s contract, which would increase the cost of the trade even more. And the cost of trading for Meier is already pretty high.

For a 1st and a 3rd, you can probably get Tank and Barbashev without retention. If you make that deal at the deadline, we won’t need the retention anyways, we get some more cap space around then anyways.

I think both sides win in this trade. Worst case scenario, Domi slides down into the middle six and basically replaces Beauvillier. Best case scenario, we finally have a dangerous top line.

Also, the whole point of Detroit moving on from Vrana is to shed cap, why would they take Bailey back in that deal?

Next Year
While I think we’d be better off giving Wahlstrom a low aav low term prove it kind of deal, it would be in character for Lou to sign a young player through the remainder of RFA status (or within a year) on an altogether still good looking deal. Wouldn’t be shocked if it happened.
Vrana pickup would be great, even if he doesn’t end up on the top line.

Poor fit on the Isles’ end, especially with us shedding Nelson. Isles are going to try to win now, and any kind of Nelson trade is either part of a package to trade up for an Elite player or to begin a rebuild.

New York Islanders signed Bo Horvat (8 Years / $8,500,000 AAV)
For all the people posting that he’s going to be the Isles’ 2nd line center, I think we’ll see Barzal move to the wing. More than enough teams would pay 9.1 and 8.5 for a top line Center and Winger.

You pay premiums for faceoff centers that can play all 200 ft and shoot. It’s not a “steal” of a contract, but it’s worth it.
