A quiet offseason
The reason Barron hasn't found a spot is because he's a guy with greater than 50% of his starts in the Ozone but still manages to have an under 50% corsi.
Be hard pressed to get a 3rd for a player like that, especially from the penguins. They don't need guys that have to be hidden in the Ozone. They need a 3rd pairing that can handle their own zone and PK.
That ain't Barron right now, and hence not a fit.
Maybe one day he develops into that. But PIT doesn't have the time to wait on that.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>Kaliyev is a 3rd line winger at best and not someone Montreal needs to be adding with RHP, Ylonen, Gallagher, Heineman, Farrell, Armia, Pezzetta and Roy already fighting for 3rd line roles. Also Roy is miles better than Kaliyev so if anyone is getting 2 RW it's him.
Barron has way more value than a 3rd round pick, a 22 yo NHL ready RHD that has top 4 ceiling, that easily returns anywhere from a late 1st, to a 2nd + 3rd min.</div></div>
No one is paying you that for Barron.

Thoughts on Summer - Please Read Description
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Haymaker26</b></div><div>A lot of good stuff to unpack here, and I have a lot of the same thoughts.
I have a novel of an ACGM in progress with the same mentality of filling out a younger, better supporting cast in the offseason. I mentioned Carrier, Bertuzzi, Novak, and (if we move Graves) Forsling myself, but there are also some good ideas like DeBrusk and Mangianape that slipped through the cracks. I could see Mangianape, Boeser, Stephenson, and Necas all as having high enough cap hits to limit the depth a little more, so I'm more inclined to find a player on a down year and give them a prove it deal.
Would love to see what your ideal lineup would look like, and I hope Dubas is thinking along the same train of thought.</div></div>
DeBrusk and Bertuzzi were definitely my main "down year" candidates here.
Boeser is definitely a very very long shot (and unlikely) but my thought process is that there will be teams again even with the cap moving up that have to move a contract.
Personally i'd make someone like Mangiapane a priority after Jake (and if Dubas can move Rakell, I think Smith goes at the deadline).

Dubas better do something

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BestGMBenning</b></div><div>He’s the president of hockey operations so why not? 😂</div></div>
I'm not really sure what more Dubas can do. People can get mad about the summer but there were two options IMO.
1.Make the EK trade and bet that having him + Letang on the blueline can translate to more offense from a mediocre bottom 6
2. Don't acquire EK, keep Jeff Petry, Buyout Granlund, trade Rutta and DeSmith and use the extra cash to build out a better bottom 6 that can generate offense on it's own.
He sends Rutta/Petry/DeSmith packing for EK. (whom majority of fans wanted).
That's a great trade to move crap contracts out and get the former norris winner.
However, that also left the team with very little money to spend in an already bad UFA class. I'd say you can't be upset at the Jarry or Eller deals right now, Smith has been eh, but I still thought that was a good trade. Graves has been worse than I expected, but again, very poor UFA class, there was not many other top 4 pair LD on the market. After him it was Mikkola or Soucy.
So Dubas dealt with what he had in front of him.
Matt Duchene was never coming here, ROR was never coming here, Compher got overpaid in DET, and Max Domi is not a good center. It was slim pickins this summer.
Rust Rakell and Acciari being hurt right now doesn't help, but as you mentioned the biggest issue is the power play. If they have a league avg. powerplay they're probably sitting very close to a playoff spot in the metro.
5 of their last 7 loses are 1 point loses... because they can't score on the power play.
Reirden needs to go, and someone new needs to come in an run a totally different PP system. I sort of agree Sullivan doesn't need to go yet unless he has lost the room.
Pens are getting legit top 5 goaltending right now from both of their guys, and it's being wasted. They're giving the team plenty of opportunities and getting left out to dry. The last real shelling the pens took was vs NJD nearly a month ago. If you would've told me in August that the pens would get into early December with their goalies combined for the 3rd highest SV% and 5th least GAA I would've said that the pens would be leading the metro and probably top 5 in the league.
They're good on 5v5 and PK, they just blowwww on the PP.
I also think pens fans need to get a bit more realistic around a potential trade at this point of the season. Cap space is next to nothing at the moment. Only 4 teams have more than $3M in space. Most teams are going to look to hang tight until the deadline given most division races are tight at the moment.
There are very few players on the team that they can move. There are 13 NMC of some type, Crosby/Malkin/Letang are obviously off the bored. I don't think Jeff Carter is waiving to go anywhere (nor do I think a team he'd consider waiving for wants him). EK isn't going anywhere. Pens fans may want to fight this, but no teams are going to want to trade for Rust or Rakell. They are both good players, and Rust is having a solid year, but no GM is going to want to trade for a 31yr on year 2 of a 6 year contract (Rust) or a 30 year old on year 1 of a 5 year contract (Rakell). Plus rust has a full NMC and Rakell an NTC. If they were each a few years younger, absolutely could see someone trading, but over 30 I just don't see it. Would be one thing if they were franchise level players.
After that, you have Smith, season and a half left on his contract, 10 team NTC and the pens just got him this summer. Again, tough sell I think given cap hit.
Graves and Jarry no chance, fresh contracts.
The three main pieces to me that can be traded are Jake, Pettersson and Ned.
Now, I'm only doing this if they realize come february that playoffs aren't obtainable, but if that's the case they can probably get a 2024 1st + prospect for Jake and a 2024 1st (and maybe a prospect) for Pettersson. There are some teams that are playoff teams/fringe contenders that desperately need someone like Pettersson and it'd be nothing to retain $2M next year on Pettersson. Given Neds performance you could probably get a 3rd or 4th for him. Maybe you can get some low end picks for random guys like Shea, Z, Ruhewdel etc.
But if Dubas can get 2 1sts and some prospects, I'd take that. and if they finish bottom 10 they get the 2024 they sent to SJS and would have 3 picks this year in the first.
Stocks the cabinet up immediately, and helps the rebuild tremendously. They'd have money to spend next summer, maybe they try and go for it again without using assets.
You keep Sid and Tanger and G around to hopefully grandfather and mentor in the upcoming team and that's that.
(people saying to trade Letang and Malkin, 1. I think they want to stay as long as Crosby is around 2. I don't think Pens can get as much in a return for either player that they think)
That's my take on all of it.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

B) Bertuzzi is not signing that cheap. He's doing that THIS year to get his asking price up.
C) You want to pay 3rd pairing dman $4M+?

So your solution to fulfilling a needed upgrade over our 6th defenseman Ruhwedel is to trade away a top 6 winger in Rakell who had 60 points last year, bring in a small player in Garland who has underperformed, and put fringe AHLer Hinostroza on the first line?
Seems like a lot of negatives just to upgrade a bottom pair defenseman. Can easily be done another way.

I don't really expect that to change at all. But they have potential offensively that I haven't seen get tranbslated yet. Through 3 games, Eller is the only one with a point.
I get that that isn't their modus operandi, but if they don't start to produce, I'd be a little worried. We'd be relying too much on our top 6 to producea lot and produce consistantly. If they go on some cold streaks - which will happen with a group that age - then there will be games in those stretches that are plain unwinnable. How many games like that can we afford?
I don't dislike the group we have, for the most part. But we're going to need to get as much as we can out of that bottom 6, both offensively and defensively. Small sample size aside, we're not getting that yet.</div></div>
I think Zohorna can bring that offensive touch without sacrificing defense.

Absurd is being kind.
1) Thompson is on waivers and can be had for free
2) The Sens will have to ADD a sweetener to move Joseph
3) I know two years ago Forsberg had a fantastic year, but by and large he's a decent back up and arguably a lateral move from Nedeljovic. Nedjelkvovic's two best years are way better than his one best year, and he's half the price for Forsberg.
This is just a weird trade.

That Pens trade is straight up insulting.
1) Savard isn't worth a 2nd and a 3rd, even with retention. Currently he's an average 3rd pairing dman making too much money, and yes, with retention that brings his value to what it likely is. That said, an average 3rd pairing dman is not worth a 2nd or 3rd. At best, he's worth 3rd with retention. Just because he's physical doesn't add any value.
2) He simply doesn't fit financially even with retention.
Pens pass. Ruhwedel is equally as good defensively and makes less than $1M.

I know you're not the biggest fan of McCann for whatever reason, but the reality is he's the Kraken's top line winger and leading scorer on a bargain contract. McCann is more important to a contending Kraken team than a likely late first round pick that wouldn't contribute for several years, and he's just about the last winger Seattle would be willing to trade. McCann's not going anywhere.

Ranking Kent Hughes Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Haymaker26</b></div><div>The entire Petry saga was really odd all-around from Pittsburgh's perspective. Oh boy, here I go monologuing again.
Last season proved what I believed was the issue in the '22 offseason: Hextall revamped PIT's D core instead of the forward depth.
And yet, there was a method to the madness in the original swap IMO. The Pens were buying low and selling high. Petry came off of the Murphy's Law season that was the '21-'22 Habs, and a return to form in a lesser role on a better team was reasonable. Meanwhile, Matheson was coming off a career year with the Pens, and there were some doubts that he could replicate it.
Matheson was, of course, stellar when healthy. Petry got a lot of flack, but he was still a solid 2nd pairing defenseman IMO.
Thankfully for Pens fans, Dubas is far more competent than Hextall. I'll gladly give you guys everything you got if it means EK65. DeSmith had a down year this season but is typically a pretty good backup. He struggles a bit as his workload increases, so if MTL keeps him around over Allen, Montembault is probably the clear starter. Legare was solid in juniors but struggled in the AHL. Even at best-case, I don't think he'll be an NHL mainstay, but the change of scenery and being on a better AHL team will get him back on track a bit.
The one perplexing thing for me about this whole trade tree from a Pens' perspective is Ryan Poehling. He had one of the better eye tests in the Pens' bottom 6 last year. I thought he played with a speed and two-way presence that the Pens needed then and could still use now. He'd have been cheaper to keep than bringing in one of Eller or Acciari, and I don't think he's much worse than either.</div></div>
Ryan was honestly pretty great on the forecheck too. Weird that he didn't sign. Acciari is Dubas' guy, not surprised there. What really perplexed me abt the deal was that MTL somehow got a 2nd.

Part of that could very well be because the Penguins had a better defense as a whole (14th most goals against vs 6th most against), but certainly not all of it.
Additionally, Krug has two more years of term, and has a full NTC for the next two years as opposed to a 15 team NTC.
So we add a 1st, 3rd, and young puck-moving defenseman to overpay a defenseman for 4 years instead of 2 years. I'll take my chances with Petry, thanks.</div></div>
Erm... who ever said the same offer applies to Krug? Of course Krug would never return so much. You can take him for free. Sheesh.
