my biggest nightmare
I can't see the Wings wanting a mid-six Rust through 36 years old when they already have money and term committed to Copp and Compher. Taking on cap while retaining on Fabbri for a year while needing to sign Kane, Seider, Raymond and Rasmussen doesn't make a ton of sense.

This is probably is close. Depends on how Rasmussen is viewed. Maata likely has to go the other way or be part of a trade to make room on the blue line. Also gives them more righties than lefties (assuming Maata is out) but that's not a huge deal.

Whats Steve cooking
The problem with Hanifin is that he's a rental that capped-out playoff teams could get for less than $2.5M AAV with retention on Calgary's part so there is likely a bidding war for him at the trade deadline. Wings are better looking at Tanev for a legitimate top-4 shutdown guy.

Would be pretty disappointing to get Pionk with that first after trading Hronek for it who is better and younger. Rather just roll the dice with the pick.

(DET/STL) - Vrána for McLaughlin
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>Yeah - I'm sure it would sting in a way, but I'm sure most Detroit fans would be happy to see him back on track wherever it winds up being. Have to remember these guys are more than just cap hits on a spreadsheet sometimes, and celebrate a guy getting back to a better place.</div></div>
I'd love to see it work out for the guy. Thought he looked OK in the few minutes he got after the call up from GR. And - even as a huge Detroit fan - maybe Vrana turning it around would finally let some of these people see Yzerman isn't some 13-dimension chess playing god who can do absolutely no wrong.

I'd hope the Wings hold out for a prospect in a Bertuzzi trade as then it's a guy with a little more known development and closer to the show. 1st from the Pengs isn't terrible though as they could be an early out.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoreHitzSeider</b></div><div>Yeah let's keep repeating this same loser's mentality this season too. And the year after that. And the year after that one. Because selling each trade deadline is best. We've been selling for 6 trade deadlines now. Maybe we'll be ready to contend in the playoffs when Larkin is 35? Yeah that's the ticket.
But yay! Let's sell again and add to our 4 million draft picks! You know what? I'm going to order a brand new shiny Red Wings jersey now on nhlshop.com!</div></div>
I want an actual contention window not impatience to make the first round while losing assets for nothing. No idea where the rant about the 2nd round picks or 4 million picks (we have a total of one extra) came from. The rest of your post is laughable at best.

Think Wings would want Minten or Knies in a trade for Bert but it's close. A lot of Wings fans over-valuing Bert as a rental it seems.

Yzerman isn't selling if he has a chance at making the playoffs. That's been his goal all along. His words. Not mine. Bert is still a big part of this team whether you like it or not. Trading him for peanuts right when his game is taking off is certainly foolish.</div></div>
Making the playoffs just to get ripped by Boston and let Bert walk for nothing is horrible asset management. A solid prospect or first round pick is way more important to this team in the long run than 4-5 games (with or without Bert) in April.

Wings wouldn’t have interest in this. When Vrana has his stuff in order he’ll go back to scoring goals. No rush for the Wings this season to move him for scraps.

Reverse ACGM 2
Passing as Detroit. Hoglander a bit of a wildcard in that transaction but Hronek > Myers in about all ways at this point. Production, cap hit, age (24 vs. 32), team control, etc. They're signed the same length with Hronek at a $1.2M AAV discount ending in RFA (vs. UFA for Myers). Hronek better in terms of possession as well - marginally - last year. Hard to argue to trade a mid-pair guy coming into his prime for a mid-pair guy who seems to be quickly descending. And Hronek will finally be playing with an actual mid-pair guy this year too, so he should look quite a bit better for Detroit. Boiled down it's a mid-pair D for a gamble on a mid-6 wing while losing a 2nd rounder as Myers will be close to done at the end of the contract and Smith is a replacement-level guy.

Bad trade for Detroit. Goalie market is generally pretty soft and the expansion draft will force teams to move goalie assets for below value.

What does an Athanasiou to NYI deal look like
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>Athanasiou has been consistently bad defensively and I just wouldn’t give up and A prospects for him - maybe a 1st rd pick alone. I wouldn’t even consider trading Noah Dobson, Wilde, or wahlstrom for him</div></div>
Fair enough, but you don't turn a guy who scored 30 in the NHL and is 25 years old into a later-first-round pick who you hope can become what he is. Would be terrible asset management. He's actually not as bad defensively as most make him out to be. Better when he plays center, which I wish the Wings would go back to.

I would be comfortable giving up Sebastian aho (LHD) , kieffer bellows, and a 2nd. Not saying that would get it done, but I wouldn’t give up more than that for him</div></div>
I wouldn't be interested in that by any means as a Wings fan. Would have to be some package starting with Wilde or Wahlstrom. Nothing else in the futures in the Islanders' system is remotely interesting. Athanasiou playing with talent can be a game changer.

Yeah no doubt. Makes me wonder how far down the road contention really is for this group. If you start factoring in regression at about age 32, the clock is ticking on Mantha and AA. They'll have 6 seasons left after this one before they hit that mark. I think Yzerman might move on from one of them soon if the return is right.

Don't disagree. A lot of people had him slotted in the first first pairing for Canada at worlds which is saying quite a bit. But it's a big jump from the Q to the N.

Waiting to see him get going after the injury. Hopefully he's right back at it as the left side of our system blue-liners isn't a lot to talk about. Top 4 would be a great thing if he can get there, but I'm usually skeptical about prospects.

Drafted a lot of D last year. Couple are playing SHL hockey now, so good start there. Hronek and Seider are hopefully the real thing.

Yzerman has pretty much said AA is better on the wing, though I'd have him at center. Larkin is a good player for sure but he doesn't stack up with the elite 1Cs in the league real well. Rasmussen and Veleno? We'll see, hopefully they pan out.

I like Bean or Haydn Fleury in that trade. Left side depth on the blue-line is starting to be questionable. I'd trade AA for a high-end center prospect as well as he's the oldest of the "core". Ideally Larkin is a 2C if we end up only getting Byfield or Lundell my feelings aren't going to be terribly hurt.
