<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>I don't know how any CBJ fan watches this team and thinks we're just a top-6 center away from competing. Lindholm doesn't make this roster a playoff roster, Lindholm plus a rejuvenated JG puts us middle-of-the-pack, in all likelihood. There's just too many core pieces that are too young still. It's a transition year, so the team doesn't have any business buying a rental, and I'd personally rather wait to see if we can sign Lindholm in the offseason after he's moved to a contender as a rental at the deadline. </div></div>
I agree it would at least make this team middle-of-the-pack <strong><em>THIS</em></strong> year, but it would also complete the center depth, give another needed veteran presence, and as this roster continues to mature in the coming years, they should become a very dangerous team. Center is the most important position on the ice, so I think upgrading Sillinger with Lindholm would go a long way.

Neither team is going to be willing to trade those players, and if they did, it would take more from CBJ to get them in both deals.

Rewarding the team
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>alwaysnextyear</b></div><div>It'll be interesting to see who they move (if they do). Peeke has played 1 game on the season, unable to crack the lineup on a sub-par team. At what point does having that contract/term sitting in the press box start to lower his trade value (which probably wasn't a ton to start with)?
I'm not saying Beauvillier is a fit for the Jackets, but he could easily be shipped out for a pick at the deadline with some retention. I'm not sure the same can be said for Peeke if he continues to sit. Personally I hope VAN steers clear of him. If they're going to give up anything of value for a CBJ defender I'd rather they target the potential upside of Boqvist.</div></div>
It's also feasible that he's sitting in order to not get hurt before he's traded, as the CBJ did last year with Gavrikov.
Beavillier could be traded, but no trade in the NHL is done easily. Teams have options and a GM would be foolish to take on a player they don't need or can't fit on the roster with the hope of flipping them. I know it's been done, but it's really not that common, and when it does happen it's usually quick because the second trade was already set up. If VAN retains 50% of his cap, then maybe Jarmo figures out a second trade to send him out right away, but they definitely aren't keeping another forward when they are already scratching KJ and Marchenko periodically due to having too many guys.

This is a 2024 ACGM, so one year of Vanecek for 3 of Elvis. CBJ retains 25% and give NJD a 2nd. It's really pretty fair. Elvis has been good in the past too, so a change of scenery could do him good.
NJD also doesn't have a 2024 2nd, so this could happen at the draft if there is a player on the board the Devils want.

Ok sure, it's just as likely that any player in the league requests a trade. If that ends up being the case, Jarmo sends him to Calgary for Lindholm, not another winger.

Yeah you'd be paying Elvis $4mil for the next 3 years though, and CBJ would get relief from Vanecek coming off the books after this season. I think it is pretty close to a win-win.

CBJ isn't paying a 3rd to move Peeke and take on an additional $2.2 million for each of the next three years. Their interest in Garland, if you rounded to the nearest whole number, would be 0%.
I think CBJ could and should put a competitive package together for Lindholm though. Personally, I would trade Sillinger, Boqvist or Peeke, and a protected 2024 or 2025 1st rounder.

Canucks Playoff push
CBJ paid a 1st and 2nd for Provorov and he's been their best defenseman (and player overall) over the first 9 games. Why would they flip him for a 2nd and 4th and also take back a bunch of money at a position they currently have a surplus of?
It would take two 1sts for VAN to swap Garland for Provorov, and that's just the value in a vacuum considering contracts and abilities. CBJ still wouldn't do it because it makes no sense from a roster construction standpoint.

He doesn't have as much as people think, but he does still have worth. It's probably about a 4th or 5th round at this point, but he's still only 25 and I'd rather Columbus hang on to him and trade Boqvist. Boq has a higher upside and unique offensive talents so he should bring a better trade return. He's also expendable due to Severson and Jiricek occupying the top-4 on the right side for the foreseeable future.

Maybe Columbus does that, but only if they can't find a deal that is just dealing out Peeke or Boqvist for a pick. Personally, I think they'd rather keep Peeke since they have so many offensively capable dmen, i.e. Werenski, Severson, Bean, Jiricek, Mateychuk, Svozil, Blankenburg. Peeke is a good fill-in and can replace Gudbranson in the next year or two whenever it makes sense to buy him out.

These are good lines.
Fantilli is ready for the top line, and hopefully Laine can return ASAP.
Boone should be able to help drive and mentor KJ and Marchenko.
If Roslovic can continue driving play, he should be able to help elevate Texier and Sillinger offensively.
Bemstrom has been good, but he is best suited as a fill-in player, not a guy getting regular top-6 minutes.
Every line here has a good mix of grit vs skill, size vs speed, and offense vs defense.

Well he would be a good fit then, but as a pending UFA with no future on this team, I'd be fine with scratching him as long as Vronk is playing decent. Injuries happen too, so he'll get some games.

I liked what I saw from Voronkov last night. He really knows how to use his frame, and his fire give the team energy. I admit I haven't watched Foegele play much so I'm not sure what all he brings, but they would have the flexibility to do that if Vronk is struggling.

VAN would you rather
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mediumyeet</b></div><div>Peeke is a gamble given the term remaining on his deal...
I don't think Van is desperate enough to move Garland with that kind of retention for what could be considered project dmen.</div></div>
Two more years at sub $3mil for a 25-year-old is a gamble? He still has a good likelihood to further improve, but he is far from being a "project".
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dickie_Dunn</b></div><div>I think Peeke was miscast in a higher pairing and this has damaged his outlook. He was a great D man in college and <strong>could be a reliable and serviceable 3rd pairing guy in time. </strong>.</div></div>
In time? He is 25. going to still refine him game further, but at this point he essentially is what he is. He's a bottom-4, shot-blocking PK dman who played a good chunk of minutes the past two years on the top pairing where he was asked to do things in which he was not well suited. He is already a serviceable 2nd pair guy and a good 3rd pair guy. He has a big body and leaves it on the ice every night. Just about every GM understands that you need a guy or two like that on your blue line.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boldirev</b></div><div>Boqvist by all accounts is not at all what they are looking for. Defence, size and physicality are the priorities apparently and he has zero of those qualities. Peake has size and physicality so that's something, but it's almost certainly on the low end of what they want to accomplish. I don't know who is undervaluing whom, me a pure bottom of the rotation D man with bad numbers or you a middle six forward with good numbers. The much rumored trade hasn't happened so......might never know.</div></div>
Again, I agree Garland is clearly the better player, but he's not a world-beater and in this era you are 1000% not going to move a guy like that who has $5mil AAV contract with term for any kind of decent return. If VAN doesn't retain or take even money back it would cost a 1st round pick to move him.
I will yield that $200k x 3 years is not enough cap relief to justify the 4th rounder on Peeke, but it absolutely going to cost VAN to move Garland.

Like I said jizz in your pants.....</div></div>
It sounds like you're probably underestimating these defensemen. They have flaws, but Peeke's numbers looks so bad due to how he was overutilized, and NHL GMs value physical dmen. Boqvist is an offensive dynamo with a rare skillset and is still young and developing. His defense sucks, but he still has a really high ceiling. 350k x 3 years is 1.05m, which based on established trades in this league, that is worth about a 4th round pick.
Maybe the retention has to be a little less, and/or maybe the pick has to be a round lower, but I do not believe this is that far off.

VAN wants and needs to add a defenseman, and is going to have to move money out to do so. Garland is the better player, but I don't think it is a massive disparity. There is quite a bit of precedent across the league with the cap situation teams' are in for them to have to pay to move a contract with as much money and term as Garland's. Even with the retention it is taking 200-350k off of VAN's books for the next three years, and CBJ are adding that to theirs.
The value is slightly in CBJ's favor here, but no one is giving you a defenseman and taking Garland back without retention and pick.
