Considering the Free Nature of the Asset - Why Not
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Prime_Jimbo</b></div><div>He probably supplants Jarvis and Kane/Necas would depend on chemistry/fit for top 6. He's still better than Jarvis...</div></div>
The great thing about Carolina, though, is that even if that is in fact the case, it doesn't have to be. Carolina is deep enough for another run without Kane's presence.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rags21</b></div><div>4th lines are usually a defensive or checking line lol there’s absolutely no way Kane is ever put on the 4th line</div></div>
I'm thinking kind of like how the Canes used Stefan Noesen last year, except with Kane's still-excellent offensive vision. The Canes have a defensive 3rd line (because of Staal and Fast) rather than 4th line, so it actually makes sense to shelter Kane in this fashion.

Kochetkov has one more waiver-exempt year. Nothing else beyond that; he's as highly regarded as he was last year. They just brought Andersen/Raanta back because of the Cup push.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FlyOrDie20</b></div><div>Why are there so many Tippet trades recently? We are keeping Tippet. Period.</div></div>
I'll tell you why; a lot of people see a Hagel-esque situation brewing for Cates and Tippett. If the Flyers are going to stink for a long time, both may not even be in their primes when they are good again.

I agree in principle. On the flipside, the Blackhawks chose to sell guys at similar age ranges or younger (Hagel, Dach, DeBrincat) to stockpile draft capital. It will all depend on how far Briere will be willing to go for last place.

Parlaying Pesce and Necas Into a 40 Goal Scorer
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>That makes more sense. I don't get what Roy would do though because he's literally LA Pesce. Same age, same contract issues.
Necas for Kempe doesn't make enough sense. We need production. Kempe's goals are nice, but I'd rather have the younger player with the better point production</div></div>
I think that Roy is the easier re-signing for Carolina. He likely will not command a 7-8 year contract on the open market in the same way that Pesce will.

Actually, Arvidsson would be a great fit for the Canes style of play, too; it's just that the role that Kempe would fill (elite goal-scorer) is the single biggest need that Carolina has.

Parlaying Pesce and Necas Into a 40 Goal Scorer
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>What? Am I missing something? Necas just had a better season in terms of production than Kempe did and is 2 years younger... Necas can play center... that's a rather large price to get like 14 more goals. Kempe is one of the few players in the league with speed that can match Necas, but even still, this makes 0 sense for Carolina. 2.5 million in cap space for 14 more goals just doesn't make sense. The entire point would be to add someone in addition to what the Canes have, not swap for what the Canes have.
And this RD is not good enough. DeAngelo in the top 4 should be a crime, relying on a 39 year old Brent Burns to be your premier RD is a major risk.</div></div>
My original trade idea also swapped Chatfield + PHI 2024 2nd for Matt Roy, but for simplicity's sake, I kept it as Kempe for Necas+1st as the point of discussion. My original idea had the following defensive pairs:
Slavin-Burns
Orlov-Roy
Skjei-DeAngelo

My thought behind the Kempe for Necas idea was that everybody simultaneously gets something and gives up something. LA gets cap space for a big goalie add (potentially Hellebuyck) and an extra season of team control, but also loses some goal-scoring. Canes lose a season of team control (Necas has 3 RFA seasons remaining before age 27) but gains a 40 goal scorer at a good cap hit. The goal-scorer premium means that the Canes give up the 1st.

Would the Canucks risk a Pettersson departure by not improving their top-6 right now? This is why they're really in a tough spot.

Maybe. There's still a lot of question marks on that team IMO. They still don't have a lot of forwards that can play solid defensive hockey, especially at forward.

The Canucks 1st has potential to be higher than the typical picks given out in hypothetical Konecny trades. I would imagine that the value isn't that far off but may require a couple of additional pieces.

The big problem with this analysis is the fact that you're ignoring the Nikishin inclusion. Nikishin has the potential to be a true 1D.

Nikishin is likely better than either Mintyukov or Zellweger. Part of me wonders if Zellweger is better off as a premium bottom-pair piece with offense a la DeAngelo in the long run considering the size limitations.

Dallas Acquires Hanifin

The Stars clearly think that Lundkvist could develop into a top-4 caliber player, as well, considering that they traded a 1st+ for him. Hanifin's also relatively young at just 26, which plays a role in why I think he's worth as much as he is in a trade.

I generally assume that it takes more than the hockey community expects to acquire players, especially considering how late our 1st rounders are.

If Waddell jumped at every shiny object that became available, this organization would not be anywhere near the position it is in now with an excellent young core and a prospect pool that's deeper than anyone else in the league, although it lacks true blue chips. If you don't think there were very good reasons for landing Puljujarvi, you may need to learn why this team operates the way it does. Go and learn about Eric Tulsky and his team for a start, honestly.</div></div>
And seriously, Puljujarvi struggled potentially because he needed double hip surgery and wasn't disclosing his pain to anyone until the end of the year. That's the part that nobody who wants to dunk on the Canes ever brings up.

The rental +1 value of Buchnevich lowers his trade value some compared to a player with more term. If absolutely necessary, though, I could see the Canes offering Morrow.
