Kotkaniemi's underrated in the online hockey community. He broke offensively really late in the year but still managed a 0.5 PPG pace. I would not be shocked if he continued his upward trajectory this year.

Carolina would accept in a heartbeat though</div></div>
The Rangers open up massive cap space with this trade by eliminating most of Trouba's 3 year cap hit. That's valuable in and of itself considering the pending K'Andre Miller blockbuster extension in 2 seasons. Pesce is also a piece that is potentially a long-term fit unless they view Schneider to be a top-4 caliber player long-term.

Oh sure it would...for a few days. But if you think about it, does the Carolina version of Chatfield make the Canucks a better team? Heck yes he would. I genuinely think that a trade like this would be a win-win for both teams. Canes get an interesting young forward while the Canucks improve at a crucial position.

He'd be better than Byram for this year, IMO. I think that this is a pretty fantastic group:
Toews-Makar
Girard-Tanev
Byram-Manson

Because Skjei+ isn't nearly enough for Lindholm. Maybe a three-way trade is necessary.

Doesn't do us any good? I don't quite agree with that. Teravainen and Drury are IMO much better fits with Backlund and his offensive skills than they are with Staal. Acquiring Backlund keeps the defensive line in tact.

The Suter contract is a rather palatable buyout after this season (with only a year remaining) because it is technically not a 35+ contract. Dallas can run a group like this:
Hanifin-Heiskanen
Lundell-Lundqvist
Suter/Harley-Hakanpaa
And just buyout the Suter contract after the season.

We talked about it this morning, but yes, a Backlund trade would open up three scoring lines for the Canes:
Bunting-Aho-Jarvis
Svechnikov-Kotkaniemi-Necas
Drury-Backlund-Teravainen
And one elite defensive line:
Martinook-Staal-Fast
What a lineup that would be!

Wait what? They're BOTH expiring. That's the whole point! If Hanifin is adamant about wanting to get dealt, this would give Calgary another crack at keeping the defense decently good. Perhaps they also sign somebody like Pius Suter to backfill for Backlund.

The center that is most desirable for the Canes (Lindholm) likely isn't available for trade until at least the deadline. The Flames were one of the more unlucky teams last year according to numerous metrics and I think that group wants to try again before deciding to sell off.
Also, Bunting and Marchment are quite different as players. Marchment is way larger at 6'4"/220 and more physical on a general basis.

My proposal was a deadline trade, specifically if Jarvis still wasn't cutting it in the top-6.

Many of St. Louis's worst contracts are currently immovable. I would imagine that if St. Louis has another terrible year that they would go for a full rebuild, and someone like Kyrou would get a mammoth return that IMO Carolina should pay.

Tarasenko is going to hit UFA and chase a better deal next year anyway.</div></div>
I wouldn't say that there should've been "zero" interest. Just like Pacioretty, it was a totally free shot for no draft assets. Thing is, though, I wonder if the Canes genuinely can chase a longer-term add if teams like St. Louis/Nashville/Pittsburgh/Washington further crater by the trade deadline.

A Nylander-Pesce Trade That Actually Make Sense For Both Teams

The Canes had sub-average goaltending last year (in the regular season) mainly because of injuries. The Canes' defense was otherworldly and allowed the fewest shot attempts of any team in the league this year. And they only got better this year (Orlov).

I get your point. There is a risk in it becoming Hall for Larsson if the trade is done incorrectly. The difference, though, is that Larsson was an extremely late blooming defenseman who didn't take his final form until the year before he left. Pesce is already incredibly valuable and has been that way for years.

Premium RHD, in terms of on-ice value, are considerably stronger than at the wings. Canes have a weird situation where they are loaded on defense but need offense, and I think the inverse is true with Toronto.

It's about allocating cap space (and therefore premium talent) to defensive players instead of having it so concentrated at forward. Pesce would be extended in this scenario.
