My Case For Bunting

It’s gonna be tough though given the reports that mantha and kuznetsov are probably staying. Makes me wonder what the off-season holds now for the caps.</div></div>
It's really hard for me to believe that Mantha will be on the roster this upcoming season. Whether by trade or buyout doesn't matter, he HAS to go. Kuzy, well, there are reasons to possibly keep him around. I personally wish we would move on, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is on the ice for us opening night. If he does stay, I really hope Carbery can get him back to being worth his contract. Most Caps fan know how good Kuzy can be, but his recent production is wearing thin.
I would guess that if Mantha and Kuzy aren't shipped out, there has to be a sacrificial lamb. With Wilson pretty much being off the table(or so they say), that really only leaves Oshie. But I can't see how getting rid of Oshie is a better idea than Mantha, but I digress.

IMO 5.75m might be a tad too much now, but I think he could be signed at the contract you suggest. I don't understand all the love for Bertuzzi. His long term stats, and his injuries somewhere don't deter others on CF from signing him at 6.5m or so.</div></div>
Thanks! I figured since Mantha is getting $5.75 mil, it might be telling to put Bunting at the same AAV. I'm not a big Bertuzzi fan either, but he still does have a lot of potential. He is definitely not worth $6.5 yet. I think both Bertuzzi and Bunting still have a lot to prove. I'd expect shorter deals at around $5 Mil each.

I doubt the Isles would accept that 1 for 1. Probably would have to add at least a second, if not more. Pageau is considered by many to best one of the top 3 3C's in the league.
Washington will give you Mantha for a bag of pucks and a Nylander signed jersey. :)

I wasn't necessarily saying to use the 8th pick on us. But in this draft, the 8OA would fetch a nice return, that can be used to immediately upgrade the team

I don't understand the desire to draft Michkov. If we are trying to put a good team around Ovi (as promised), waiting 3 years on a pick that could've been used to improve the team now, is irresponsible. All the defection rumors are silly as well. With the political tension around the world right now, if Michkov was to defect, it would start a firestorm.

Maybe he will look better this year, but it's pretty hard to see that happening and even GMBM seems to have low confidence with it.
Getting rid of oshie would be great if you could find someone to take that contract, but that is highly unlikely and would require a pretty significant sweetener to whoever takes him. He probably gets bought out after this season if I had to guess.
I disagree about Schmaltz. A player who continually puts up solid numbers on a terrible team speaks more to the player. If he is putting up 60 pts on a team with essentially a bunch of AHLers and Keller, that proves he would probably put up more points with significantly better linemates. His cap hit is fantastic too, I'm really hoping the caps go for him</div></div>
With OEL recently showing such a decline after being traded out of Zona, I'm hesitant. Think about how many people thought he was the best thing since sliced bread. Ask Vancouver how that turned out.
Agree with Oshie...would be really hard to trade him, but it needs to be done
Backstrom, for me, is all about hope and faith. I want to see him get an assist on the goal when Ovi passes Gretzky.

They may have space, but with 8 UFAs and 3 RFAs that were regularly playing minutes last year, they have a lot of holes to fill. Agreed that the return in my scenario is a bit light for Toews. I had received a suggestion to give less in my first version of this roster. So I went with that for V2.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kalopsia</b></div><div>It's kind of weird to me how you're totally willing to overlook Backstrom's massive decline because of his service to the team, but you also want to kick Oshie to the curb. Backstrom's the much, much more dire medical situation IMO. There's no precedent for a guy making a comeback from the surgery he had, and MacLellan seemed extremely pessimistic about Backstrom's chances of improving this summer.
I mean, I'd rather just keep our own 50 point producer with a lot of snarl who's beloved in the organization. As for Tarasenko, I don't think he's a likely hall of famer but I wouldn't mind him. What's his connection to Ovie though, aside from being Russian?
The two of them together seem like a bad fit though because you've already created a top line that needs to be heavily sheltered with an aging Ovechkin, crippled Backstrom, and swapping Wilson for Nylander. Then you've constructed another line here with Bunting-Strome-Tarasenko that's also nothing but offense, and you've run out of cap room so you're left with basically two 4th lines that'll be forced to play a lot of tough minutes because of the makeup of the top 6.
McMichael hasn't been given a shot to be a center at the NHL level, which IMO is a big part of problem - he's a much better fit at center than win. At the AHL level this year he got to play center and definitely outperformed Lapierre. His boxcars won't jump out at you, but the Bears played a very D-focused style and nobody on that team had gaudy point totals. The fact that he was the 2C on a team that won the Calder Cup is enough for me to want him to get a real shot at C in the NHL.</div></div>
Backstrom is a whole lot more important to the Caps than Oshie. Don't get me wrong, I love Oshie, but in my mind Ovi-Backy are my hockey equivalent of Jordan-Pippen. They are PB+J. You can split em em, but it'll never taste as good as when they are put together...toasted of course 😉
Tarasenko frequently played on a line with Ovi and Malkin in international play. Most Russians in the NHL are close(few exceptions). And it wouldn't just be for Ovi...Suz and IM are gonna need good mentors/examples.
You said it perfectly...A "2C" on an AHL team. Not a good sign that this far into his development that he is only trusted with 2C on the little club. Everyone acts like he is putting up 40/40 in the AHL. VERY Overrated by Caps fans.

He said he wants Wilson to retire a Cap, Elliotte Friedman got pretty much the same feedback when he probed about the Wilson situation a week or so ago, so the only question for me is how long it takes after July 1 for them to get the Wilson extension finalized.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kalopsia</b></div><div>I don't think the difference is as big as you're making it out to be. You're leaving out that Wilson's elite defensively while Nylander's very much not. At ES their production is closer than it seems. Wilson's was down this year, obviously due to returning mid-year from a torn ACL, but over the four previous seasons he had 1.86 P/60. Nylander over the same span had 2.14 P/60. The thing that really separates them is that Nylander gets first unit PP time with Matthews and Marner, while Wilson gets second unit PP time with a tired Ovechkin who was out with the first unit and Lars Eller. I think Nylander's PP production would crater in Washington because A) it's a significantly worse supporting cast, and B) how do you incorporate a right-shot sniper onto a PP that's already built around getting the puck to a different right-shot sniper? If they keep Forsythe's 1-3-1 set up I don't know where you put Nylander. Even if they move to something else though, how do you design a PP around both Ovie and Nylander? I can't think of a way that wouldn't force one of them to go underutilized. If you keep Wilson though and they stick with something built around the 1-3-1, then he slides right into Oshie's slot in the middle and probably adds 10-15 points a year to his total.</div></div>
On this current roster, yeah, Nylander wouldn't find a spot on the PP. But with the one I built...he would get plenty of time. Nothing wrong with a right shot on the right side of the PP. People tend to forget that traditional right wingers are right shots. I've never been one to worry about "elite" Defensive forwards not being on the top line. The first line SHOULD be your best point producers. (I have my reasons for putting Backy on the top line, btw). I've also always thought that Wilson's point production limit is about where he is now. Nylander, in a good situation, could easily be a 45+/65+ guy.

EDIT: also that’s a weak set of futures for that return lol</div></div>
The immediate impact of a trade like this is freeing up cap space and getting draft capital as trade fodder. I do believe I mention that the trade could need to be tweaked. I have a very elevated opinion on Toews. So I understand he wouldn't be cheap. :)

Interesting idea. It's so hard to see $15 million dollars sitting in the bottom 6. :(. I don't understand the lack of confidence with Backstrom. I don't want to make a prediction because so many things can happen, but I really think he is gonna have a bounce back year. I'd much rather give Nicky his usual responsibilities as our top C than keep on riding the Kuzy train to disappointment land. Oshie, as much as I like him is not even close to what his contract pays, even when he is healthy. And since we know for sure he is going to miss a lot of games, getting rid of him now is the smart move.
I like the De Hann signing. You know what to expect there and is a safe "scratch" player to have around.
I personally don't think McMichael is anywhere near earning 2nd line minutes. He's been better than average in the AHL, but doesn't seem to have the drive to ever be more than a 3rd liner in the NHL. By now we should have seen a huge jump in performance, but unfortunately that just isn't the case.
Schmaltz is a wildcard. Would potentially be a HUGE upgrade over someone like Mantha. I always worry about players coming out of Arizona. It doesn't take a great player to put up points on an annually bad team.

Toews and O’Connor are not fits. Toews is a really good player but the D is set and we need to upgrade the top 6 not the bottom 6. Plus we shouldn’t trade McMike.
Osh isn’t going anywhere. Hopefully he gets healthy and is solid like he was at times last year. Outside chance at LTIRetire but doubtful. Don’t think anyone would take him.
Don’t think Bunting or Tarasenko are great fits.
I think Kuzy prolly stays so really we are looking at plugging McMike in and upgrading one top 6 winger.
Again great work, but not the route I think we should go</div></div>
Nylander had 87 points last year. Was +10. And had 70 TK compared to 37 GV. Wilson in his BEST year had 52 points. Yes, Wilson is physical. Yes the fans love him. But to get a player like Nylander and put him opposite of Ovi is a no brainer in my mind. Especially with Nylander just now going into his prime. I also don't like labeling most players as "not going to move". The Caps have always been pretty closed lip on their dealings. Also with Carbery just coming from Toronto, I feel like more Leafs are coming out way. :)
To say that our D is set, is to say you are comfortable with 3 YOUNG (with a lot to prove) players patrolling the left side. Bringing in Toews gives us that ultra reliable and steady Dman on the left, hence giving the three more time to develop and gain experience.
Oshies great, but sacrifices need to be made if we are going to follow through with our promise to Ovi.
How is a 50 point producer with a little snarl a bad fit? And how is a likely hall of famer who can do about everything a bad fit? Especially when there is a connection with Ovi.
McMike is not a center...never will be. In my opinion as well, he will never be more than a Gustav Nyquist type guy. And that's probably too high of a ceiling. I personally prefer Lapierre. But that's me.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. This is definitely fun.
