Marner goes to Texas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ship</b></div><div>in my humble opinion, im not quite sure if the value is there for Marner. My thought process being, is toronto in a better position to compete for the cup after this trade? I'm not quite sure if they get the players back they need to get closer to the cup. a 1st round is nice, just doesn't move the needle right now unless they could flip it for a good player.</div></div>
I this allows them to re-sign Bert and Domi. It gives then another C prospect that's NHL ready in Bourque and a D prospect that should be able to start playing in the NHL very soon. 2 depth pieces that can help the PK (Faksa) and depth scoring (Dadonov), as well as the capspace to sign a good UFA defender.
It also frees them up to trade picks to fill in any other glaring holes they may have, like goaltending.
2 years from now you'd still have Matthews, Nylander, Tavares on a discounted deal, Rielly etc and possibly Bichsel, Bourque, Cowan and Minten on ELCs or bridge deals playing well. That kind of depth would make them true contenders

Marner goes to Texas

How would they afford his new contract extension?</div></div>
Cap should go up again
His AAV will be lower due to the tax situation.
Benn, Suter and Lindells contracts expire after next season, which gives them options
Lots of possibilities

Why not Dallas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheMooterus</b></div><div>I mean, before picking up Tanev this deadline Ryan Suter was playing consistent top-4 minutes. After this trade you have here, Dallas has the following:
Harley-Heiskanen
Lindell-
Suter-
Lundkvist is a 7th defenseman, at best, Hakanpaa is genuinely awful at everything except for the PK, and they'll have no money or pipeline depth to go out and fill out the rest of the right side of their blueline with legitimate talent.
Or they come back next year, regardless of what happens over the next month, with a top-5 offense and the following blue line:
Harley-Heiskanen
Lindell-Tanev
Suter-Bichsel
None of that happens if there is an extra $11M on the books though. I know how desperate Leafs fans are to get rid of Marner, but that contract (and his NMC) is going to make it pretty damn near impossible to do so.</div></div>
Funny thing is you say Leafs fans are desperate to get rid of Marner but at no point did anyone question the value in the deal, rather the affordability of Marner, which is still a very doable situation for the Stars despite you simply wanting to argue

Why not Dallas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheMooterus</b></div><div>Dallas does this and their defense is left in shambles. They wouldn't be able to re-sign Tanev (or any top-4 caliber defenseman), they'd lose their best defensive prospect, and they would lose a 1st Round Pick that could be use to bolster the defensive group in their pipeline. All for a guy that Dallas doesn't need. Finished 2nd in the league in scoring this year and haven't had any issues scoring in the postseason. The trade doesn't make sense for Dallas, even before you factor in that Marner is about to want a Matthews-level contract next offseason. Stars decline, and to be honest it's really not much of a conversation.</div></div>
Now I just feel bad for Dallas' future. Imagine taking one defender out of their system that has never played an NHL and the result is leaving their blueline in shambles. They better win the Cup this year because it's all downhill from here 😆

Why not Dallas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikearky</b></div><div>I just looked, they have 69 million and 13 players signed. Adding Faska's money pushing it up to 16 million and 12 players. By adding Marner you have 13 players signed but only 5 million to sign 9 players. Can not see them doing that.</div></div>
With Marner and with Faksa in Toronto it would actually leave them with 8M and 7 players to sign. It's worth noting that of those 7 players 3 would slot in on their 4th line and another is a backup goalie. Not ideal but it's not a terrible situation either. I'm sure the Leafs or another team would be open to trading for players like Marchment or Dadonov as well.

Not as long as Benn and Seguin are on the books.</div></div>
A rising cap, almost 16M in capspace this summer, almost all of their stars already signed and Benn + Seguin 2-3 years away from UFA. I think they can fit him in just fine to be honest

Piggybacking off a trade offered by a NYR fan
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AG_sweden</b></div><div>Yeah of course that is better. It is not that Nylander isn't worth it. It is basically the price of half a year Nylander. That is the issue, because resigning him seems impossible (can't pay 11 m for another forward). And think they be able to put a team together.</div></div>
I hear that. It would have to be a sign and trade type of situation and they rarely happen.
Removing the Canada tax would bring his number down as well. I'm guessing he'd get 9.5 south of the border, but who knows

Change Lindgren to Schneider, take away a 1st and add Goodrow for $$, maybe something goes in from the Leafs end as well. Work better?

The trade aside, if Nylander went elsewhere the ask wouldn't be 10M, I can promise you that. That ask is based on the Canadian tax that all agents ask for due to the higher income tax in this country and the pay scale of the Leafs. If he were on the Isles he's either match or come in just below Barzal. My guess would be they'd match his jersey number, 8.8Mx8 years.

The Athletics proposed trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Byrr</b></div><div>The thought would be that Garland has more to give. He was one of the leagues top scorers(pretty sure the top scorer) at even strength last season and has a history of bigger production than Kerfoot.</div></div>
Over the past 2 seasons Garland has just 4pts more than Kerfoot. Before that yes, he was more productive, but Dubas is on the hot seat, he isn't about to pay for the hope that a guy can reclaim his game from years prior (at least not in this case, where the player would come at a cost of 4M per season for 3 more years).
Kerfoot plays C and plays on the PK as well as the 2nd PP unit. Garland doesn't play the PK and doesn't play the middle.
So Kerfoot is cheaper, more versatile, used in more situations and is a pending UFA
vs
Garland, who is more expensive, less versatile, used in less situations and is overpaid for 3 more years (even with salary retention).
.
It doesn't make sense and this "rumour" is based on nothing more than the fact that Dubas tried to acquire Garland a couple of years ago, but obviously decided against it, combined with the fact that he is now untradable in this salary cap landscape, but they want something to talk about and the Leafs get clicks.

The Athletics proposed trade
This would be a confusing trade for the Leafs to make. The Leafs need more scoring, so they're going to trade Kerfoot and a pick for a guy that has 3 more points than Kerfoot? On top of that the guy they're getting is more expensive and signed for 3 more years, aka the time frame in which all of the Leafs stars are due for new contracts.
Everybody you talk to will tell you that Kerfoot is a salary dump. If thats the case then so is Garland.
The Athletic is desperate for clicks I guess.

I don't see any reason for LA to move him. Their guys still want to win and they're in a playoff spot. Not about to profess to know all there is to know about LA but it doesn't make much sense from the outside looking in.
Maybe you can get Sean Walker this summer after he recovers, considering how good Durzi has been.

It was reported that the Leafs were taking calls on Dermott and Holl. I think they were fishing for an upgrade. Holl hasn't been himself this year so they want something better there. So, sadly, what it would take is a better defender in return for Dermott + a pick or prospect.
Just my theory anyway.

Leafs 2020-2021
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsHaveNoCapSpace</b></div><div>Well if we're comparing Fleury to Andersen in value fleury is a much younger RHD who still has room to grow. Andersen is now 31 and at the end of his contract. Theres no guarantee he'll resign with Carolina so right now his value is priced as a rental. Lehner only fetched a 2nd and a fringe backup in Malcom so it's fair to assume Andersen and a 2nd would be fair value for the rights to Haydn Fleury.</div></div>
Disagree. A rental without Andersens track record is who you chose as a comparison and one that was expected to stay for a couple of months instead of a year at least. Andy should be worth more.
Besides that Fleury hasnt lived up to his draft ranking and shouldn't be expected to grow exponentially.
On top of that the trade proposed has the Leafs adding a 2nd, I think the 2nd alone is Fleurys value, never mind Andersen.
The Canes need to add here, not the Leafs
