This is simply not true. The Lightning finished 7-3-0. The Blues were 8-1-1, the Avalanche were 7-1-2, and the Canadiens, Predators, and Ducks were 7-2-1. The Blue Jackets and Red Wings also finished 7-3-0. Other than that, everyone was below the Lightning's last ten game record. So the Lightning were tied for sixth place in last ten game record. If you eliminate non-playoff teams, that rises to fourth, tied with the Blue Jackets for best in the Eastern Conference. Considering how difficult that stretch of the schedule was, that record was not going to come by a fluke. Obviously the Lightning had perhaps the worst playoffs in NHL history, but to claim they ended the season badly and just picked up where they left off in the playoffs is objectively not correct.

It doesn’t matter that they were rebuilding, though, because they needed cap space right now and they were paying a middle-pairing defenseman as a top-pairing star. They extended his cap hit not because he was bad, but because he was overpaid by a few million and that was money they didn’t have.

Shattenkirk has looked quite good, though. He’s certainly not what the Rangers had hoped, but there’s a difference between not being worth a nearly $7m cap hit to a cap-struggling team and not deserving an NHL spot. I would call him a fringe top-four defenseman who needs to learn how to defend if he wants to really thrive. He’s not someone to give a massive contract, but certainly someone great to have around.

I doubt Witkowski and Smith get sent down. They’ll probably be in some sort of rotation. We might want the physicality at times and need injury replacements on the roster and they need to be kept fresh. It wouldn’t surprise me if Verhaeghe, Paquette, and/or Maroon rotate with them. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Witkowski is an injury replacement for defense too, since Foote was bad in training camp and we don’t have much depth beyond that (Masin or Gaunce are next). It’s interesting about Engblom, though.
I think Verhaeghe deserves to stay on the third line for the first little stretch. It isn’t easy to adjust to the League and it’s harder with worse linemates, so he deserves some chance before we push him down, especially since Verhaeghe doesn’t look like someone who could handle the fourth line. If he doesn’t quite appear ready, I would call up Volkov and see how it goes before moving Verhaeghe to the fourth line.
Hedman concerns me. I don’t think he’s looked good at all since his injury, and he’s one player we can’t really do without, which probably played into the playoffs quite a bit. I hope he’s okay, and it’s going to be a long season if he’s truly lost a step.

Confirmed lines for tonight
That second line could be problematic. I know Cirelli is extremely good defensively and has shown some good offensive ability too at times, but there’s no true offensive threat there. It also means Palat is getting a lot of ice time without an experienced talent to help cover for him as I expect him to have some difficulty finding his consistency again as he recovers from injury. Killorn is insanely underrated because of our cap situation, but I wouldn’t quite say he’s a top-six forward who can drive offense, and I don’t know who else is on that line. I think Stamkos on that line and Palat paired with Kucherov could be better to make sure teams have two elite lines to counter. That being said, if Kucherov and Stamkos find a good way to effectively compliment each other rather than adopting unnatural roles they think will help most on an already talented line, they can take care of most offensive needs and all we need from the second line is defense. With decent chemistry it looks among the best shutdown lines there is, so I guess we’ll see and it could honestly work out either way. The third line, with a little bit of time, could probably near the top of the League as far as third lines go, and the fourth line looked very good during preseason (as did the defensive pairings, although Hedman concerns me because he doesn’t exactly look healthy right now). I guess I like it. Every line and every pairing definitely has a role and has some of the best talent around to fulfill that role, and there’s no area of the game being neglected, but no line looks able to reliably cover if another line has a few bad nights.

That's not where Volkov belongs anyway. He probably belongs on the second line, but Stamkos doesn't need another shooter, so that pushes him down to the third line. It's not that he's better than those bottom players, but he's less physical and more of a player who compliments other high-end talent than a player who can handle a fourth line role.

I would like it a lot more if it weren't a totally meaningless preseason game. We lost, but even if we had won, it's just not worth the injuries. I guess the bottom players sort of have to play like that, since they easily could be sent down otherwise, but players with roster spots should not be doing that kind of thing right now.

I feel like Martel is the least likely to be claimed on waivers, though. And it’s up to Cooper who plays each night, but BriseBois decides who to send down. They undoubtedly work together there, but if BriseBois likes Gemel Smith (as I suspect given that we signed him), he might insist that we risk Martel.

Lines I wouldnt mind seeing when Point returns
Verhaeghe hasn’t been playing center at all for the past couple of years, as far as I know (I could be wrong, though). I guess Johnson could take that spot instead, though, as he sort of tends to improve at center anyway and the only reason he doesn’t usually is that we never had a spot. Stamkos on wing opens one. The other thing is that Joseph in the top-six is a little bit bold. He does play well with Cirelli, so it could work out.
Not that this is a valid consideration, though, but if we do use this lineup, we’re inflating the values of all of our upcoming RFAs and diminishing the trade value of our depth players on contracts we can’t afford anymore. Obviously we’re trying to be the best that we can be, but maybe it’s something to be cautious about.

EARLIEST Point ready is end of October
To an extent, I do think we would benefit from him missing some time because 82 games is tiresome by the time we actually need these players (and I really wish Cooper would rest people more), but hopefully Point knows how to adjust quickly from not playing hockey to suddenly playing again. Missing training camp is never good for players, but it's not as though it's unheard of for players to have to get back into things after missing time injured, so hopefully he makes it work as well as Vasilevskiy did immediately against the Leafs last year (but this time, maybe he won't get re-injured right before the playoffs but continue playing anyway).
That being said, the "regular season is a joke" is the attitude our players had in 2016-17. It didn't go too well.

Not every team is in as desirable and cheap a location as Tampa and it's understandable that some places need to pay players more to get contracts, but that doesn't mean Matthews and Marner aren't overpaid.

The only reason Stamkos wouldn't be playing center is if he plays well with someone who exclusively plays center. If we pair him with Cirelli like in preseason, he might move to wing, but Johnson is more accustomed to playing wing than Stamkos anyway but hasn't played center in years, so it wouldn't make sense for Johnson to center Stamkos.

Not necessarily. Nobody wanted him on an NHL roster immediately, but now that he’s cleared, teams can put him in the AHL for $75k in cap space and then call him up whenever and it’s great risk-free depth. Before now, anyone who didn’t have the cap/desire for him in the NHL couldn’t take him without risking losing him on waivers. Now, he’s more valuable because he’s flexible.

Really? I know BriseBois said he was worried about performance bonuses when he traded Callahan, and that wouldn’t really have made sense if we could have 7.5% of the cap in leeway (in fact, it would have just hurt our cap situation because of Condon).

Verhaeghe definitely is still here. I don’t know about Stephens, but I don’t remember him being sent down. It’s early for anyone with a realistic chance of a roster spot to go back (Raddysh and Katchouk kind of surprised me).

Volkov looks great, but I’m not sure where he fits in the top-six. The problem is he’s a shooter more so than a playmaker, and Stamkos and Kucherov don’t need another shooter (it in fact stifles their production, especially Stamkos, since he feels forced to be the playmaker and isn’t as good at that). I wouldn’t mind trying to see what he does with Kucherov, but I don’t know if that would really work too well, so I think there’s a good chance he ends up a top-six talent forced onto the third-line. Maybe he’s more skilled than our other wingers, but Gourde, Johnson, and Palat play the roles those top lines need but don’t have. Volkov doesn’t and I feel like he’d have more space on the third line to do what he’s best at.

Actually, the waivers don’t indicate that. All they mean is that nobody was willing to pay anything to have him on an NHL roster. Nobody needs an NHL backup goalie right now.

Tampa Cap space over 10M
We don’t have $10m, though, because we can’t afford to go over on performance bonuses. That pushes us right back to around $8.5m. Not to mention, next year, we do have to re-sign Cirelli, Sergachev, Cernak, and Joseph and Vasilevskiy’s raise starts. In this inflated market, that’s hard. I don’t like this prospect of a holdout, but BriseBois undoubtedly has a reason for doing it.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>coga16</b></div><div>If Domingue clears, I think a team trades for him. Avs need a decent call up goalie so it wouldnt shock me if they make a trade tomorrow</div></div>
Is Domingue on waivers? If he is and nobody’s claiming him while he’s free, why would they trade for him and give up an asset? And if nobody is giving up an asset and he clears, we should keep him.
