Agreed.. But by protecting certain players we can limit who they take - can leave Matheson unprotected and they won't take him (but leave Petterson unprotected and we can get rid of him). Same with forwards - may be in our interest to leave Zucker exposed, and they may bite on that. Desmith too, not sure the goalie situation for expansion but he may be their pick, still 29 and always consistent as an NHLer

Also how did edmonton get thrown in there?</div></div>
I don't necessarily disagree, but this is only replacing UEFA EL/CL, wouldn't change the English pyramid system and domestic competition (unless FA bans them, which they won't). Perhaps some players get rested on the weekend, which already happens and already favors the big money clubs who have deep squads. UEFA is just as corrupt if not more, and it's kind of nice to see them undercut for once. They created this beast by not enforcing FFP and now are crying because they got too big and cut them out.

Not against it.. Malkin/Letang being UFA next year though would allow for a mini-rebuild and 1 more shot with Sid.. Not sure why everyone on here seems intent on trading Dumoulin for hardly anything though.

Whats NEXT
What's next? Years of mediocrity.. Instead of just letting contracts run out that aren't the best he's constantly either signed guys to long terrible contracts (JJ) or swapped short-term poor contracts for long-term poor contracts (Matheson, Pearson, McCann, Bjugstad).. that, combined with trading high draft picks and prospects (2020 1st, Kahun, 3rd) for players who didn't work with their current teams or are old as dirt (Sheary, Kapanen, Marleau) instead of rebuilding on the fly (which is what won us 2 cups - youth talent) - We're set up for a cliff dive and it's ugly.

LINES
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>what???
do you even watch the team?</div></div>
Yea, live most nights - They've been exposed on ocassion throughout the year, but last 10 games they've switched the script to running around lost - they watch the puck and have given up goals that should be easily preventable. Like players not picking up the trailers, puck watching, somehow giving up a 2 on 1 when Letang skated the puck all the way into the other end (i.e. no forward covering).. At one point against Washington I literally saw JJ/Schultz BOTH at the half wall in our own zone, and gave up an easy & quality scoring chance all alone in the slot. It's elementary **** that for some reason within the last 2 weeks we've forgotten what to do. Combine that with offensive short-comings and an ice cold PP and we're getting hammered. Sullivan went from a Jack Adams candidate to being on the hot seat should Pens miss the playoffs.

Penguins
RFA deals all seem low, even before the projected increase in the cap.. And I would assume Riikola would at the very least receive an offer sheet of $1.339 mil from another team. Sullivan does not like him for some reason, so I doubt he's happy here and would welcome an offer from another team.

Revisiting The Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nights_King93</b></div><div>I think this could be said of any team. If Boston loses Krug or Mcavoy that D room becomes much different. Same with Tampa and Hedman, Sergachev, etc. Washington loses Carlson they are likely done, even if it would be just one round.
Pens have better d depth than most. CR has played a lot on teams that won cups. I personally still like Riikola.
Other than that, I think we are essentially in agreement on every other issue.</div></div>
That's fair. They do have a lot of depth there, but the constant impulse to move Johnson up is a concern should the Pens face that scenario. Riikola has more than held his own this year, but Sullivan just doesn't like the guy.

POJ as a throwaway to get rid of Johnson is dumb. Just keep Johnson as third pairing LD, his cap hit is manageable.

Next Year
I don't understand the Devils perspective on this. If they sign Schultz for even $4.5 million (he'll likely get more in open market) then they're paying net $9 million for him for first 2 seasons. If they Penguins could pull this off I'd rejoice, as PK would be the best 3rd pairing defenseman in the league.

Revisiting The Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nights_King93</b></div><div>Sorry. Hadn't been on while I was absorbing that tough stretch... I think Rutherford and his choices are too early to tell. Ideally, the Pens need to at least get the 2 seed in the division again. That would be a small win. Then they need to have at least 6 playoff wins for these trades to be viewed as successful. Sheary and Rodrigues can go unless they fit in extremely well and want to stay on team friendly deals.
No issue with Marleau, although i hope he isn't playing 2nd line minutes in the playoffs.
The D is perfectly fine now as long as they stay healthy. Dumoulin and Marino in particular, as they just play smart and with confidence. Letang loses his cool too often, that is why they were able to get by without him in 2017. He is a risk/reward player.</div></div>
I don't usually like revisiting the deadline, as you never know what guys were actually available. Don't know much about Forbort, and Bennett is barely cracking the lineup on an average team. I think Kahun is way overvalued. Top-6 on a bad team I'll agree with that (Pens unlikely to re-sign him anyway which is why I believe he was dealt). Sheary opens up a lot of balanced line combinations and has chemistry with Sid. Rodrigues is a solid bottom-6 add and likely a necessary 4th line guy - Since Blueger is god awful at taking faceoffs. Defense should be in great shape now that JJ and Schultz can play third pairing minutes (and JJ good on the PK). The only scary part is if any of our top-4 defensemen get injured in the playoffs, we could fall apart pretty quickly.

Pretty much everything <a href="/users/Jesus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><a href="/users/Jesus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Jesus</a></a> said. I definitely don't think we sign Sheary, and the proposed goalie salaries are very low. Bjugstad is all dependent on how he plays rest of this year. I would also not mind moving Hornqvist, but he would be tougher to move than Bjugstad.

If McCann plays 3C with Marleau, Marleau could take the draws and then they immediately switch back.
