What is that move
What exactly does CBJ get back in this trade??
Campbell would require multiple firsts to dump, Ceci isn't much better than anyone on their current right side. Basically giving away Merzlikins for free?

Maybe we just need some smaller changes
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SGB88</b></div><div>This leaves lots of space to resign and build a roster trust me. I've these done enough to know. <strong>You missed that there's 5m in retention this year 3 from Myres and 2 from Beau for the Canucks to use. You're math is about 5m short.</strong>
They've got 32.15m next year (this includes OEL and 4m salary cap increase)
Petty 11.5m Hronek 6.5m Three extra non-starting players forwards plus two bottom two wingers (call it 5m to be very conservative) 5m
This leaves 9.15m for two D and a backup. Personally, I think the Canucks use an internal player as backup so Silvo or Tolopilo. That would be about 1m depending on who exactly. Otherwise, could be 2m for backup. That leaves either 7 or 8m for two top 4 D. I'm hoping they can get Tanev for around 3.25mx2 with a pseudo hometown discount. But either way, you've got 3.5m to 4m per player. That should be enough to get it done.</div></div>
Ah, yeah missed that, good point. If going in on JPG is the move, then adding a pick for a little bit of retention would still make me feel better if it's possible. Also, Tanev played his last Canucks hockey at 30yo, getting him at 34, even with a discount, could backfire if the plan is to pair him with Hughes. However, I'd be all for putting him on the 3rd pair with Hirose to help the rookies settle in.

Interesting, but the issue then becomes resigning key contracts next year. Petey, Hronek, DeSmith, Blueger, Lafferty, Bear and Cole free up 22.1 million plus an approx 4m in cap increase = 26million.
Resign Petey at 11mil and Hronek at 7mil (18 total) gives 8mil to find a Backup Goalie, Top 4 LHD, Top 4 RHD, and two 4th liners. Definitely an option to call up players like Aman, Hirose, McWard, Silovs.. etc. But you can't tell me that will provide better depth than the team has this year.
*Edit*
Not to mention OEL buyout increases to 2.3m next season

Hard pass from me. With the cap space from the OEL buyout Garland isn't a must move player anymore. Since that's the case, Connor Murphy isn't enough of an upgrade to justify trading down from 11 to 19

Contract swaps
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BigShoots</b></div><div>The only selling point you'd have on an OEL trade is that if you retained he might be worth 4-5 mil to some team as their 4-5 dman if he had a bounce back yr. The longer you wait on that the less likely that could happen. As a pure and known cap dump of 7.8 mil it would cost like 3 1sts to move him.</div></div>
Three 1st's is an absurd price, it won't hit that.
Andrew Ladd 35yo 2x5.5mil (2nd, 2nd, 3rd)
Patrick Marleau 39yo 1x6.25 (buyout) (1st rd pick)
Mark Staal 33yo 1x5.7 (2nd rd pick)
OEL 31yo 4x7.2
In a couple of years OEL will be 33 with 2x7.2 left. At that point, with the Canucks wanting (trying) to contend, it won't be much to send a 1st and a prospect like Raty away to make room. Even less with ~1m retention if necessary.
Currently, moving Boeser and/or Garland while Myers expires in a year is more than enough room to sign everyone they need.

It doesn't usually get better as players age (though Karlsson might contest that). The big key would be moving his money out so you could replace him with a UFA defenseman like Graves, Gavrikov, Severson.</div></div>
I didn't mean he'd play his way out of being a cap dump, just that it would cost less to dump 2 years of 7mil vs 4 years of 7mil.
Also, the key to my post was the Canucks don't have any CURRENT options to replace him. And frankly, I'd rather not overpay a Graves or Gavrikov,, I have zero trust in Canucks management going into Free agency

This might be an unpopular opinion with Canucks fans but I don't think it's necessary to deal OEL yet unless it's a CLEAR and easy win for the Canucks. As I see it, every year that passes makes it easier to deal or buyout OEL. I don't believe any current options the Canucks have to fill his spot are <strong><em>better enough</em></strong> to offset the cost of what it would take to deal him.
Ie. is it worth trading away Raty and a pick just to have Breisbois replace him? Not yet imo. This conversation shifts year to year depending on cap space and the resigning of players like Petey, Hronek, Podz, Hog,, etc. but seeing as there's still a year from that happening I say keep him playing 3rd pair minutes and pray that he plays at or above replacement level until their hand is forced in dealing him.

Two things can be true at the same time.
1) Hronek is a good player on a good caphit acquired at the price you'd expect for a 25yo top-4 RHD
2) Canucks selling off two picks in the top 40 of one of the deepest drafts in 20 years while they currently sit 5th last in the entire league with some mammoth contracts they can't get rid of and one of the worst prospect pools in the entire league is perplexing and frankly exhausting.
This is a move you make when you want to take the next step in playoff/cup contention. The Canucks can't even get out of the basement.

Sell the team Francesco youre an embarrassment
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gordfish</b></div><div>So it's Horvat and a 2nd for Beauvillier, Hronek, Raty and a 3rd.
I see Raty as a really good 3rd line centre, so...solid. Not spectacular, but solid.
I understand the poster's frustration, but they said all along they weren't rebuilding. They are looking for players that fit the age group with Petey, Hughes and Demko. Hronek does that, and FINALLY upgrades the right side of the blueline.
Given the latest rankings I've seen, even if they do rise up in the draft a bit, they'll still have a shot at Yager or Moore.
Outside of the Horvat trade tree, I'm not all that impressed with Alvin's trades so far, but let's see what he does by Friday.</div></div>
On a side note: The Canucks are ALREADY OVER THE CAP FOR NEXT SEASON. With Miller and Kuzmenko's extensions kicking in they have 83.6m committed.

I wish I could believe this, but if you're not a Canucks fan you don't understand. Every GM/President that Frencesco Aquillini hires is a puppet. He will only hire guys that say "we can turn this around in 2-3 years". Well it's been 10. NO matter who has the title, FA is the one pulling the strings.
