<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>The Pens have a known need for a middle 6 C to play 3rd line as neither Granlund or Carter are cutting it. There are also plenty of UFA upgrades to Pettersson avaliable in FA, but they are going to want term that Anaheim is not going to be in a position to give.
So explain why the pens aren't taking this.</div></div>
Granlund can be easily bought out for a very reasonable buy out penalty and Carter can be buried on the 4th line or in the press box for one year. Beyond that, the Penguins already need to replace Dumoulin in the top 4 on the left side and replacing 2 top 4 defencemen is a lot more difficult than replacing 1 (that's not to say Dumo SHOULD have been a top 4 defenceman, but that's how he was used so those minutes will need to be replaced). Even ignoring all that, Pettersson was the best defenceman on the Penguins this year by a very considerable margin, both analytically and in terms of the eye test, so unless FSG hires people that are totally incompetent to run the team, he likely won't be available unless you completely blow them away.

Salvage the season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Oilfan1717</b></div><div>Hmm, that’s unfortunate. Perhaps he’d reconsider now that he’s a pending UFA?</div></div>
Pretty unlikely. It wasn't a case of Zucker just not wanting to play in Canada, Along with 2 of his own kids, he has a step daughter, and Carly, Jason's wife, is on record publicly saying she'll never take her daughter from her biological father, so Jason moving to Canada (even on a short term basis) would make things very difficult for everyone involved, be it Jason himself, his wife Carly, the biological father, and the kids.

Sweetened Zucker offer
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>He was playing on a line with Crosby and on a power play with Crosby and Malkin. Conor Sheary straight out of Wilkes-Barre did better. At a 5.5M cap hit, some Pens fans seem to have buyer's remorse on Zucker.
Dude, in the playoffs, he was only outscored by a single point by Crosby, Rust, and Guentzel, outscored Malkin and Letang. He had 12 points in 15 regular season games after the trade. Anyone that has buyer's remorse is dumb, isn't paying attention, is biased against Zucker for some reason, or some combination of those things. He's objectively at *worst* the third-best winger on the Penguins. Further, he was not with Crosby at 5 on 5, nor did Sheary "do better" having tied Zucker in points but only had assists whereas Zucker had goals. I don't understand this narrative.</div></div>

Why is this a thing? In what world is 2 goals in 4 games a bad playoff for an individual player? This just doesn't make sense.

I wish you would have this energy in the Red Wings centred ACGM post from hours ago proposing this exact trade in which I literally commented that I don't know that Detroit accepts it. Even in this post, I clearly state I'm not confident that the Red Wings do it.

Bud Moonshine literally just makes stuff up and posts it on his site. Constantly. Literally one of the worst sources of Penguins news around. If he's saying the Oilers are out, I'm convinced the Oilers are the team that's pushing the hardest.

The numbers clearly take a dive. So it's easy to cherry pick the numbers here.
You are looking at two players here who would be bottom 6 players and asking which one can produce.
Virtanen is that kind of player, scores goals, finishes, goes to the dirty areas and hits people.
Simon doesn't really do any of that. He's a guy that really would like to play a skill game, fit in the top 6. But he lacks the elite speed and skill to really be there. Which is why he couldn't stick.</div></div>
Simon was also the best option to play RW with Crosby and Guentzel on the team out of everyone that played that position and had a 6.6 SH%.
