Most Habs fans are fine keeping him, for the reason we don't need to dump him, and 95% off the trades I've seen with Anderson included are to contenders who might actually do what contenders do every TDL and make a dumb trade for a guy their GM thinks is the missing piece.

We are more than happy to keep him, if we don't get the return we want in a trade, we will do exactly that, and with the level of desperation league wide for goalies this year, strong chance we get what we want. <strong>It's not like Anderson in MTL where we desperately want the roster spot or need to clear the cap to do anything with the roster</strong>.</div></div>
MTL doesn't really need to clear a roster spot at forward, most of their prospects would be better off getting some time in the AHL with some callups if injury happens. They want a roster spot open on defense, but moving a forward doesn't help that log jam. MTL also really doesn't need cap space, they have over 7M next season before factoring in Price going on LTIR and no big names to sign, and Armia Savard and Dvorak coming off the books the year after.

Given Kaprizov has 2 season after this that probably an underpay for him, but I don't think MTL does it simply because if the development of their young players stalls Kaprizov doesn't make them a contender. It's a more than fair deal in my eyes, but about 2-3 seasons too early for MTL to be making that kind of move.

Difference is Campbell has 3 more seasons after this one while Klingberg is only this season. Monahan to MTL is a more accurate comparison, so a 2nd is likely the most it would cost the Leafs.

And right now RHP looks better than Foudy with only about a years difference in age.
Drop the picks and MTL would likely refuse, but them giving up a 1st for a 3rd makes it an obvious no.

Bostons 2024 has been previously traded and is top 10 protected. If top 10, then the 2025 1st replaces the 2024.
I just wanted to clarify: this means Boston can trade neither pick, right? I cannot recall seeing a trade where the “other” draft pick is traded away, since it is possibly owed to the first trading partner. I wonder if there is prescedent to trade the “other” pick before the first trade’s outcome is determined.
Boston sends Jake DeBrusk and “either the 2024 or 2025 1st round selection, depending on the conditions of a previous trade” to the Jets for Schiefele. Can they?, it just hasn’t been done this way yet?
If this is not allowed, I wonder how much consideration is given to having one of your most valuable futures assets frozen for some significant time period. If this is not allowed, for all purposes of this season, the pick doesn’t exist.</div></div>
Florida traded their 2022 1st to Buffalo for Reinhart and it was top 10 protected with it potentially becoming the 2023 1st. Florida traded their 2023 1st to MTL in the Chiarot deal before the 2022 picks condition was settled. If the 2022 pick had been top 10 Florida would have kept it, sent the 2023 to Buffalo and a 2024 1st to MTL. So yes, Boston could trade their 2025 1st as long as there is a condition for that pick ending up going to Detroit.

(DET/MTL) - Lindström, 2025 4th (DET) for Petry
Apparently Hughes informed Petry that he would do his best to trade him to an American team (Detroit if possible) as quickly as he could and would try to get the deal done in time for Petry to get his family settled before his son started school. Hughes probably could have held onto him and got more value, Petry probably would have understood trades can take time, especially when the GM is trying to get you to a specific team at your request, but Hughes wanted to get it done and do right by Petry (and probably valued opening up a spot for the younger guys a decent amount). Not the best trade, in a vacuum it's an L for MTL, but they already got assets and moved a bad contract for taking him so I can understand not worrying about maximizing the return. If Petry is even 75% of what he was through most of his time in MTL it's a great deal for Detroit at that cap hit.

Byron likely never plays again, Gurianov is no loss and neither is Drouin. They already have 13 forwards signed. Matheson, Guhle, Savard, Edmundson, Kovacevic, Harris, Xhekaj and Barron make 8 guys signed for 6 spots on the backend, and is more than acceptable for a team that's mid rebuild. It's basically just Ylonen and RHP to sign and that isn't coming close to 5M never mind 10M.

I'm fine with giving Gurianov a shot, but claiming Ylonen is infinitely more valuable because his QO is lower is just nonsensical. We're talking depth players, not headliners.</div></div>
Hoffman and Armia are more likely to be waived than Ylonen at this point I think. Also, I never claimed Ylonen was infinitely more valuable than Comtois, just that he has more value. Teams don't typically trade young players that have a chance to make their roster out of camp for what amounts to negotiating rights with a UFA.

It's not really an exchange of bottom 6 players though. Comtois is unlikely to receive a QO from the Ducks or any team he might be sent to, making him basically a UFA, while Ylonen has a QO under 1M and is likely to receive it. If it's just a swap of bottom 6 forwards in similar situations you want, then Gurianov for Comtois would work, since both are unlikely to get a QO. If it's Ylonen you want you'll need to offer more than a guy who is likely a UFA in a month.

Dach with 3 years at just under a 3.4M cap hit, and an RFA when that expires, has more value to a rebuilding team like MTL than 1 year of Dubois at over 6M, if Dubois comes with an extension at a decent cap hit that obviously changes but right now Dach>Dubois. Barron and a 2nd both have more value than Gawanke. It's an easy no for MTL.

Jets trade Dubois
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Howie</b></div><div>That's the whole point Dubois going to mtl would 100% come with an extension or some sort of arrangement where they understand his ask in a deal that is close to make it work. That's why he's getting similar to meier as he's younger rfa still and a center. I've seen dach and barron with a first in 2023 so this seems like less than that</div></div>
Then put his extension into the trade description. Dubois could likely get similar to Meier in a trade, if it's to a team looking to make noise in the playoffs. Without an extension anything near the value Winnipeg wants isn't something MTL should touch.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Howie</b></div><div>HE IS AN RFA! That means that he is under team control you know that right? Why would Dubois sign a 1 year deal in mtl if he wants to play there. That's just not even close to what would happen. Why would he go to ufa if he's on the team he wants to be on long term? Answer that</div></div>
Yes, he is an RFA for 1 more season, meaning he is under team control for that 1 season. If he wants to be in MTL they can simple wait and get him as a UFA for what would likely be the same or nearly the same cap hit as trading for him and signing him long term as an RFA. Or, he might not want to play in MTL, or just might not care where he plays, meaning he will likely want to test free agency even if he's traded to MTL, which means that in order to keep him after trading for him it would cost the same as if they had simple waited, except now they'd be out 2 1sts and 2 decent prospects. Without a long term extension in place MTL is a bad trade partner in a Dubois deal since the 1 year he is under team control isn't one that MTL is likely to be competitive in.

Jets trade Dubois
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Howie</b></div><div>Dubois is an rfa this offseason which would give the habs his rights and main team to negotiate with. If the amount of trades for Dubois on here shows that there is a mutual interest in Dubois to the habs. It will be cheaper cap wise as when a ufa goes to market they have 32 teams that can make offers where the price can go up exponentially past what he would make now on a contract (8-9 long term now vs 9.5-10.5 ufa for same term) if you want him in free agency thats fine just don't complain when he goes to another team for a similar price and why they didn't pay to get a guy that wants to play there capeach</div></div>
Unless he comes with an extension Dubois can test free agency after a season in MTL just like he can if they don't trade for him. As it stands right now MTL trading for Dubois is a waste of assets. Either the rumours are true and Dubois wants to play in MTL, which means he likely signs a reasonable deal after next season, or he doesn't/doesn't care where he plays, which means he would simply play out the year and test free agency anyway. Both scenarios mean that MTL likely pays him the same or close enough to not matter if he decides to sign with them. There's almost no benefit for MTL to trade for Dubois at this point.

How does MTL trading for Dubois take less cap than signing him as a UFA (if he decides to go that route)? Unless he comes with an extension already in place he can just play out the year and test free agency, and MTL would be in the exact same position as they would have been anyway, except they'd be out 2 first round picks and a pair of decent prospects. If he does want to play for the Habs then a reasonable offer will get him in free agency, and if he doesn't then they'd likely lose him after a season if they trade for him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingofRnR</b></div><div>That’s a fair assessment.
I could debate that Dach was rushed in to the NHL too soon and whether that was the best decision for his development, but he was also a Top-10 Pick and had the size to jump right in to the NHL. Doesn’t always work, I mean Slafkovsky wasn’t able to do it either.
The McDavid’s Draisaitl’s, Malkin’s and Crosby’s etc. are a rare breed and my personal belief is this next generation doesn’t have the same level of maturity, but that’s neither here nor there.
Ruzicka might have been a decent guy to bring in for Slaf & Mesar was my mindset otherwise I would have added a Pick, but I do think it’s a better deal for MTL, but does it fit their plans, that part I won’t argue more than the Mentorship Huberdeau would provide for the Young Gun Forwards MTL has coming up
I think Jeff Skinner struggled in BUF because he didn’t have a guy he respected enough to mentor him. Who was he supposed to go to, Eichel!? These guys’s ego’s are so high and sensitive, in my head they have to admire and respect you and they just won’t do that as much with a declining 0.50PPG Veteran they know they’re better than. I could be wrong, but it my head, they’re probably like “what is this guy gonna do to help me break this slump” whereas they’d approach Huby and say wtf and Huby would tell them the stories they need/want to hear.</div></div>
Dach was absolutely rushed into the NHL, and now after a few years he's looking like a solid 2nd line player moving forward with time to improve. Pelletier is a good prospect but given they're the same age it's a stupid move for MTL to swap them.
I'm doubtful Ruzicka would make much difference in Mesar and Slafkovsky's development, and I wouldn't trade Farrell for that gamble at this point.
Huberdeau hasn't really done anything to command respect in MTL's locker room at this point. He's on pace for less than 60 points and has been out of the 1st round once. If he bounces back and plays like a star again, sure, he'll command some respect but right now he's an overpaid Veteran with almost no playoff success in the NHL. I think playoff success likely commands a solid amount of respect on it's own and MTL has guys that have gone deep. Again, it's not worth the risk of that contract when they are out of Anderson's 4 years sooner and have an extra 5M to use in the meantime on a guy like Dubois if he hits free agency.

As others have said the MTL trade is bad for MTL. Dach and Pelletier were both 2019 draft picks, and Dach is the better player right now and is signed to a reasonable deal for 3 more seasons. Ruzicka is a decent 3rd liner right now, but isn't really a player I can see MTL moving prospects for. Huberdeau is easily far better than Anderson and has way more on ice value. However, Anderson's contract expires sooner, opening up more cap to resign younger players who are performing well and MTL is unlikely to be competitive until Huberdeau is 31 so they are taking a big risk on his contract becoming a massive anchor just as they are looking to compete again. They value might be fair in a vacuum, it likely even favours MTL a bit, but with MTL mid rebuild it's not good value for them.
