Honestly in the offseason I was pushing for POJ/Smith down the left side haha - so I'm definitely not opposed to him getting another shot. And agreed - the playstyles on paper could be a good match between the two. I like Ludvig and the physicality he brings - but the results and play overall have been a bit subpar imo. So it just worried me a bit. And true haha - I commented only on the small move. I'm weird. I also didn't have a good take on the TOR trade</div></div>
I could see why people are done with Smith, but if we are gonna make a trade, might as well try internally, like we did with the offense.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JSEB93</b></div><div>Tough call. If Ludvig/Smith are given sufficient playing time before the deadline and they perform well - then moving POJ could be a possibility. But I wouldn't dump POJ just to try and give Smith playing time. POJ is a legitimate NHL dman - Smith and Ludvig are question marks/fringe NHLers at this point. Unfortunately Smith seems to be way down on the totem pole - so not sure if we will get that chance before the deadline to know if POJ is somewhat expendable. It could obviously work out - just not sure if I would take that risk without seeing Smith/Ludvig play together.</div></div>
That's fair. I feel like Smith has been playing well offensively in the AHL, but also putting up 3 points in his Spengler Cup game yesterday. A physical partner in Ludvig could be really nice, but I guess that partner could also be POJ. If anything, we can keep the 5-6-7 spots with Ludvig, POJ & Ruhwedel, but there were reports that the Pens wanted to upgrade the bottom pair, so internally, Smith could get a chance. However, this is the smaller part of this whole armchair-GM post.

I’d rather keep DOC unless he’s an add on to really improve the team. AJ Greer is a good 4th liner but I’d rather roll the dice with DOC.

DOC isn't a top 6 foward, but hes a good bottom 6 piece, ideally hes on a 4th line and imo is at worse a wash with Greer. Pens don't need to add more 4th line pieces, they need to find a good two way foward with a scoring touch for that 3rd line

POJ doesn't put up the points or look the best when he's on the ice, but he always has good all-around metrics. No point in taking him out for Smith.

Who should be on the 3rd
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Marcsnack</b></div><div>I am okay with swapping Puustinen and Rakell, maybe even putting Rust on the 3rd because I know he could carry that line. If I am being honest, I would wanna give someone else a shot over DOC. He shows glimpses, but is just inconsistent.</div></div>
He’s cheap, eager, pretty fast, and his energy and forechecking are valuable, especially to our team. The intensity that he brings is not as easy to come by as one may think, and is a role that we need on our old roster. He would be a great complimentary player to an Eller and Rakell. I’d rather just have what DOC brings for free than spend what little assets we have for a player that may be a slight upgrade in skill while lacking intensity and disruptive intangibles, especially if they’re a rental.
We’re not really in the position to do so in the first place. If we were cemented in a Metro playoff seed then maybe I could be convinced otherwise, but we need to just get healthy. Once we are, I think we will be good upfront if Puustinen continues to play well.
If come deadline time we’re in the mix and Puustinen falls off or we’re injured then, for the right price, we explore options, but I really believe that we will be fine up front as long as Puustinen continues to be impactful.

I firmly believe that Puustinen needs to stay in the top 6 to be most successful. He moves the puck too well at the NHL pace to not be facilitating Malkin. Putting him with Eller and the forechecking DOC would be a disservice to the smaller Puustinen’s play style. When everyone’s healthy, I say move Rakell to the third line and run three very solid lines.

I thought you listed those numbers to say he just isn't a good player. My bad. Looks like he was around mid to high 30% range for ozone starts last year. Unless I'm reading the stats wrong on Natural Stat Trick, it looks like he's somehow better with Carter than without. Although I still agree it would be better for anybody to not be playing with Carter.
Yeah I have no issues with trading him like you did to free up necessary space. I do think he brings something to the team though - a bit Tanevish like you mentioned.</div></div>
I was overly critical in my previous post. When I looked up his stats without Carter, he looked much more Tanev like. I jumped to a conclusion without looking at his most common linemates. You were right and I was wrong.
As for the Zone starts, I'm seeing (O, Neutral, D, Fly):
4%, 14%, 27%, 55% for this year and
6%, 17%, 11%, 66% for last year
Those numbers are 5v5.
He is being deployed poorly. He needs to be moved from Carter and put with guys he can run with and hit somebody.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JSEB93</b></div><div>I'm not saying Acciari is great or invaluable to this team - but anyone with a 13.1% ozone start percentage is going to have some pretty terrible advanced numbers to be fair. The PK has clearly been worse without him. There is a place for 4th liners who hit, block, and play well on the PK. He's been fine for what his job is - maybe a little overpaid. Not setting the world on fire, but definitely not dead weight and the numbers are more of a more deployment than system issue imo</div></div>
I completely agree. His numbers last year are light years better than this year with the same amount of OZone starts. He needs to be away from Carter and put with guys who can muck it up with him.
I think he is a Tanev type and has a place on this team. He just needs to either be put with better linemates or traded. In this scenario it was traded to get 1MM in cap space.

Pens fans need to chill. Rakell scored 28 goals last year and is snake bit so far this year. He has 0 goals but should have 4-5. I suspect he will end the year with 20ish goals. He is a top 6 winger and will find his game. Just like Rust.

Third Pair Upgrade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mr_Gardoki</b></div><div>Personally, I don't think the Pens need a major upgrade on the third pair. The beauty of their current top-four is they have the ability to play big minutes and our third pair has been good enough. Great? No, but good enough. If they pick up an upgrade, it wouldn't be anything significant.
I think the real focus is finding one more scoring winger for the third pair. I love DOC, but if he keep playing the game of "almost" we're gonna need to address that.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JSEB93</b></div><div>I'm not against an upgrade - just curious if they can fit it under the cap. Honestly idk why they don't just go back to POJ/Ruhwedel. They played 3 great games and then 1 bad one and we acted like it was the worst pairing of all time lol. We love our xGF%, but for some reason when it comes to their 66% we just ignore it. They had one of the lowest xGA/60 in the league as well.
I know it's not a large sample size, but based on the numbers it seemed like they had way too short of a leash with that pair.</div></div>
I think we need a net front presence for the third pair. Doesn't need to be anything crazy, but just someone who can protect our net better. POJ and Ruhwedle are fine, but I just think that is what the team is missing most so it's more about what type of player we need than them being bad. Peeke is good, Hakanpaa would be good too. Also think we consider moving Rakell. Like him a lot but if we could get two players that cost around 2.5, one for third line and one for top two lines I think that gives us way more depth.
