This my reasoning and hopefully it sheds some of my insight as to why I think it’s smart to trade your 1st this year. This years draft is probably the weakest draft since 2012 and has the potential to be even worse than 2012. The quality of prospects just isn’t there and the projection of top end talent is there. Unless the plan is to take a goalie at 19 which is reach as Sebastian Cossa is more of later 1st rounder and would be a reach at 19. That’s just my 2 cents as you’re in a win now mode and it makes zero sense to bank on futures rn when you have 2 top 10 players in the NHL on your roster.</div></div>
I do want the Oilers to trade their first round pick but only if they can get something valuable in return for it.

Do not give up the 19th overall pick just to dump James Neal. That's too much. Also, I wouldn't give Driedger 5 years, I would give him 3 just because how risky goalies can be. And instead of Savard, just bring back Adam Larsson, who is a very similar player but could sign for almost a million dollars less per year. Glendening isn't a good enough third line center and finally if Holloway is going to be in the lineup, he needs to be playing a significant amount of time. Same thing goes for Broberg, if they aren't going to play (or barely going to play) put them down in Bakersfield where they can play top line minutes.

Your free agency signings are solid but your trades probably aren't gonna happen. You're giving up too much for Duncan Keith even though you're getting rid of James Neal. You probably won't get anyone willing to take on Mikko Koskinen without attaching a sweetener to him and the value in the Debrusk trade isn't enough to convince Boston to accept the deal. And then finally, Don't give up a first rounder for Merzilikins. He's a solid goalie but he's a UFA next year and it's too much of a risk giving up a first rounder for a rental when you could sign a guy like Chris Driedger, Linus Ullmark, or Petr Mrazek.

I like Goodrow and I think he should be a target for the Oilers as well but, 4 years is too long of a contract to give him. I would rather them sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal because that way if he busts, you don't have his contract on the books for very long. And it's a lot easier to trade a bad player when they are on a short term contract.

There is no way Edmonton gives up Lavoie for Keith unless Chicago is taking both Neal and Koskinen which isn't going to happen.

TOI doesn't determine whether a defenceman is good or not.

You can give him a little more ig. Even with these moves Edmonton has 3.1 mil in cap space.

Things can change. Do you not remember when Jesse Puljujarvi demanded a trade out of Edmonton and said he would never play for them again? What I'm saying is that just because it seems unlikely Arizona wants to re-sign him, they could very easily change their mind. And even if they don't want to re-sign him, that doesn't really lower his trade value that much. And they do have leverage because there's going to be so much interest in him.

Arizona isn't going to give up Garland for that little. We're talking about a 25 year old who was on pace for 65 points over an 82 game season this year who also hit 20 goals last year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bringer_Of_Snow</b></div><div>I like the targets for the most part.
I'd be very concerned about trading a good prospect and a 1st for Garland. Simply too small a sample size and doesn't have the innate draft pedigree. Obviously he has looked good for the Yotes, but at that cost, I'd hope for a more establish player like Meier/Hertl.
I like the addition of Goodrow on the 4th, but it would be nice to add another top 6 guy too. Holloway is not a write in, so I think Coleman would be perfect. Can play middle 6 pretty comfortably and is a really gritty player.</div></div>
I like Coleman but according to reports he wants to play in the USA and is likely to sign with Dallas, his hometown. And Garland scored at a rate that would give him 20 goals and 65 points over 82 games. He akso scored 22 goals last year and 39 points. And he's 25 so he's going to be valuable. Something else with Hertl/Meier is that next year we're going back to the original divisions and I doubt San Jose would be willing to trade either one of those two to a division rival whereas Arizona is moving to the central so they might be willing to trade with Edmonton.

Time to go for it
These trades are not good. At all. For the Seattle one ur giving WAYYY too much just to get rid of Neal. Realistically you could probably convince the Kraken to take him with just giving them an ok prospect and a low round pick. And then the trade with Columbus is horrible too. Domi sucks and Jenner isn't good either. Puljujarvi is a very good winger who has a super bright future and is going to be a huge part of the Oilers for years to come. Ethan Bear is a 24 year old dman who had a really good year last season but had to deal with a concussion in the middle of this season which held him back. Jones is young and has potential too. The Oilers are better off long and short term by not making this trade.

As an Oilers fan, I'm warning you to not go for Turris no matter what. He was bad in Nashville and even worse in Edmonton. Hes an AHL level player who was completely invisible whenever he actually got into the lineup.

One year too long for Mrazek. Only goalies that are worth signing 4+ years are true elite (or near elite) number 1 goalies. Goalies in Mrazeks tier (1A/fringe starter) should be signed to 3 years max. Because goalies are so hot and cold this is short enough that you can either play out the entire thing or convince another team to take it, but it's long enough to convince Mrazek to sign and to have some stability. Also, Mike Smith isn't gonna sign for 1 mil. He made 2 mil this year and had one of the best seasons of his career. Even at his age he'll want around 2.5 mil. Last thing, I wouldn't want to give up such valuable picks for Reinhart. Hes a very good player but I feel you could get a player that's better than him or you could get him and another solid player from Buffalo.

Oilers after the draft
This is bad. You overpaid for Tatar and underpaid for Coleman. Coleman isn't getting anything less than 4 million per year. 6 years for Barrie is way too long since the Oilers shouldn't even bring him back since he's super overrated. Bring back Larsson instead. And going 4 years with Yamamoto doesn't make sense. Either go with a bridge deal like 2 years or long term like 6 years, no in between. The James Neal trade is terrible too. A tandem of Koskinen and Delia is terrible and you'd be lucky if that tandem can get you to the playoffs. Giving up a first rounder in that trade doesn't make sense. I would much rather buyout Neal because you still free up cap space and you wouldn't be giving up a first round pick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pete</b></div><div>Hi guys, what is so horrible from your perspective.
Departure of Klefbom, Larsson and Yamamoto?
Too many forward spots for rookies?
Something else?</div></div>
Oilers should be keeping Klefbom for next year. Giving up a second to get rid of him makes no sense. The Yamamoto trade is terrible. Yamamoto is 22 years old and is already a solid second line winger. Let him develop and he'll be a very good top 6 forward. Trading him for a 29 year old 3rd liner makes this team worse now and in the future. Now to the Larsson trade. First of all, Larsson is a UFA and there is no way Columbus gives up something valuable for a UFA. Remember Kevin Hayes only got a 6th round pick when he got traded to Philly cuz he was a free agent? Second of all, Oilers should be keeping Larsson anyway because he is extremely important to this team and the Oilers can get a better goalie in free agency than Korpisalo. The Jones trade is bad too. Even though Jones has struggled this year he's still only 23 years old and has shown glimpses of having top 4 dman potential in the past. Abramov is solid but I can't see him becoming anything more than a fringe third liner. And you overpaid for Khaira by about 300k. And give Lavoie more time to develop.
