MEIER
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>edeangel84</b></div><div>Show me which players received 2 1sts in a trade and tell me if Meier is their equal. Eichel got something similar in Krebs who was a 1st, a 1st, a 2nd, and Tuch. Kerbs hasn’t panned out to equal a 1st. Meier is no Eichel. Debrincat got a lottery pick, a 2nd, and 3rd but again he is a better winger. Rarely does a player get two 1sts and Meier isn’t in that caliber. If we were to trade Jake Guentzel tomorrow I wouldn’t expect 2 1sts even if he was going to be an RFA instead of UFA. Very few players are worth that price.</div></div>
Eichel was a NMC, so he decided where he went. This lowered the price quite a bit. Debrincat was a throwaway by Chicago gm purely for the sake of losing. Pretty much everyone thinks that Chicago should've gotten more. The return wasn't assets for Chicago management, it was a better shot at Bedard.
Again, I remind you that the prices aren't arbitrary. Maybe it is an overpay in other years. But the market cost for Meier is rising as teams are trying to outbid each other. What started as a 1st, a high prospect, and a roster ready player has become 2 firsts, a high prospect, and a roster ready player when both the Blues and Washington got two 1sts this year to trade for him. Now, other teams have to try to top that to get Meier.
And for a team like Vegas, who has struggled scoring for stretches, especially on the powerplay where they are 0 for February, bringing in an elite scorer will be astronomically beneficial. Especially since it would make Eichel more useful, as he hasn't had any players that pair with his play style well since Stone's injury (who will be out until playoffs minimum). Meier is exactly the player that Vegas needs, not just to add the scoring he brings, but to add the scoring he'd make his linemates bring.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>edeangel84</b></div><div>That’s a huge overpay for Meier. He’s good but he’s not special.</div></div>
He's very good at hockey, over 10 more goals than Vegas' highest goal scorer (31 vs 19), young, and an RFA at the end of the season. Not to mention that the market sets the price, and the rumor has it that teams are willing to give up 2 first rounders plus more for Meier. Frankly, if Ben Chairot fetches a 1st plus, Meier should be getting 2 plus.

Hague isn't really all that physical. Besides, Sandin is 2nd on the leafs in hits 113. Reilly has 45. Hague has 74. You'd be trading away the more physical player. Hague is big, but he's big for nothing more or less.

Hawks might be able to get a first for Domi if the Blues can get a 1st for Barbashev (which I believe is rumored to be true). He's been having a great season this year.

(STL/MIN/TOR) - O'Reilly, Acciari for Pillar for Abramov, Gaudette, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
Probably solid all around. The leafs 3rd line is gonna be extremely formidable defensively assuming it's some combo of Kampf-RoR-Engvall. Also should take some pressure off RoR, so his offensive numbers may hop up a good bit. Not to mention the intangibles, like bringing in not just a very respected captain, but a captain who's won the cup in recent memory. Very well could be what it takes to get them past Tampa in round 1.

Vancouver Canucks
Ok, so going after Karlsson is exactly the kind of move that got this team in trouble in the first place. Overpayed players who had a good year and weren't able to live up to it and all it does is extend their period of mediocrity. He is also not the kind of player this team needs. I'm not saying Karlsson isn't ever going to be able to be this good again, im just saying it's unlikely since he hasn't been able to do ANYTHING the last few years. He's also abysmal at defense.
Tanev is the kind of player this team needs, but Calgary isn't going to trade arguably their best defenseman (and one of the best defensive defensemen in the entire league) for a middle-six decent player.
Oliver Bjorkstrand is one of the most underrated wingers in the league, even on a down year. Nothing special about his game, other than the fact that he is extremely reliable everywhere on the ice. Seattle has defensemen. They don't need another one--especially one that is a middle-pair guy at best.
Francouz has consistently played better than Spencer Martin. Why are the Avs trading him in the first place, and giving up a pick, too?
All these moves are the exact same thing I addressed earlier, constant risky retooling that doesn't fix problems. Just extends mediocrity.

My reasoning for these players is that the window is clearly closing. What good is a d-core, goalie tandem, or a good player in the forward line-up when the team isn't trying to win? They'll all be trade pieces by then anyway, while also not really being an essential piece of the roster during the window. I think they'll all be good players, but may be better utilized in a trade now than a rebuilder later.

This trade seemed like it was made by a desperate islanders fan on here who was expecting to be booed for it anyway. But it wasn't. It was made by a gm who has won GM of the Year twice in the last 3 years.
He better have a contract ready to go for Horvat. Like now.
Also, as a person who is unfamiliar with both Horvat and the Islanders, is Horvat the type of player that the Islanders need? He seems to be another player with good skating, good hands, and a lethal shot from in close and a bit further out. Correct me if I'm wrong about any of it, but isn't that what the Islanders already have? He's an upgrade, this season especially, but it doesn't seem like he's filling any holes.

Good contract for sure. I think it'll be similar to Jack Hughes' in terms of being a bit much given short term production, but Boldy looks like he'll outperform it. May suck for the cap situation now, but by the time their penalties are over, this contract will belong to one of the teams best players with plenty of cap room to spare to support him.

I don't mind the Mantha for Boeser swap. I think it might be what caps and Boeser needs. I'm not sure if it's quite right though. Rumor has it that the Canucks are ready to sell Boeser for cheap, so mantha might be an overpayment. I also don't think they want any players/cap back

In what world do the Islanders trade their starter--one that looks to be one of the best goalies, not only this year, but in the future--for a player struggling to make and stay on the sabres lineup and a prospect? If the Islanders traded Sorokin this year, the return better start with Wallstedt or Askarov and a top 5 pick

IF Laf is traded, it will be for a package worth a first overall. He's still got the same potential he had when he was drafted, so you're trading for that potential. That won't change until he gets a serious injury, a year with 0 improvement, or he's no longer and RFA.

Not sure what the goal for Toronto is in that trade. Murray has been playing really well while Jake Allen hasn't really been. They get a defenseman, sure, but they have plenty after the Timmins trade. Maybe Savard brings the grit they need, but not sure they'd want to give up anything more than a second and maybe a fourth for him. They lose that trade easily with the worse goalie and giving up a 1st.
Not sure what'd up with the Arizona trade. They don't need Hoffman for any reason, and definitely not enough to pay for him.

Realistic Fix
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Timmah007</b></div><div>If there was truth to the oilers trying to move him why did they give him an extension in the offseason</div></div>
Two possible reasons
1) Teams were unsure about whether of not they would have the cap space to resign him. By giving an exact cap number, it may make negotiations easier
2) He's still a valuable player. The oilers don't see a future with him and probably think he's taking up a roster spot for someone else, so that may be why they want to move him. But letting him sit on the sidelines isn't a smart move and lowers the offer they can get in return. Only way to improve the offer is to let him play.

Realistic Fix
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>The Sens and Leafs trade make sense for Vancouver perhaps but not really for the other team.
Claesson4Norris already mentioned the contract aspect and that OTT is a team that needs help on the right side. Ottawa shouldn't be acquiring an expensive replacement for Norris, since they have internal options already.
The Leafs won't trade Kerfoot for a back up goalie/depth goaltending or an AHL D-man who isn't ready to step in if need be.
Edmonton probably declines as well, as they don't need cap space at this time and they would be selling low on JP. Not sure, where JP would play in Vancouver, if they are trading and replacing Horvat with someone else.</div></div>
I wasn't too sure about what each team would want back. I know that with Norris out and the rumors of Ottawa management looking for more top 9 depth, i figured they wouldn't be super excited about moving their 3c up and opening their depth up to more scrutiny. The Zub situation seems like it's been underreported based on what is likely going on behind the scenes, so I just went with what I have seen about their being potential trade expectations.
The Leafs are a pretty complete team already. They're only real drawback is cap space, which is why I didn't want to give back any cap. They have plenty of defensive depth already, so they don't really need Woo to step in immediately. DiPietro on the other hand may need to step in at some point. With Woll and Murray out, they're one injury away from disaster. They also have one of the weakest goalie pools, so adding something there may be beneficial.

A lot of these trades don't really make sense. Seattle doesn't have room for either player they're trading for, so they don't have a point to get them. Josh Anderson isn't fetching a first rounder, not at that contract. A second is probably fair considering how much bad contracts have tanked a player's trade value.

Vegas would probably match that since they can and it wouldn't be too difficult to clear enough room to have that next season. I just don't know if Hague accepts that. If it were 2-3 years, maybe. But that term would mean that he is not at all betting on himself to improve, which he will.

This is a classic case of "Give me a good player and take my garbage in return." Please consider what the return would realistically be if you're going for specific players. Detroit isn't giving up a player they can maybe get a first rounder for two garbage players, a mid player, and a mid pick.
