what it will realistically take to get Petterson
I get where you're going here and actually agree with you on the ask back in terms of overall value... it's going to take minimum of 3 top-tier/A level assets to pry Petey away from VAN. Even with him being a pending RFA, likely to get $11-12 on a long-term. But these 3 wouldn't make sense for Buffalo, it's creating more holes at forward than addressing.
Buffalo can't trade multiple of the Benson/Quinn/Peterka youth core group, only 1 at most. They'll need the other 2 for their rookie contracts to balance Petey's new deal. And I can't imagine Benson is on the table for discussion at all realistically.
But Buffalo can afford to add one of the Savoie/Ostlund/Kulich younger core into this deal. If Cozens is the main piece, i'd counter with Cozens + Peterka + Ostlund or Kulich. If VAN was willing to consider Mittelstadt instead of Cozens (which I think would work for them - he'll get ~$5M in Arb this offseason, so it gives VAN another year of cap flexibility to afford quickly re-tooling the D and still making a run for the cup next year) I'd be willing to go Mittelstadt + Savoie/Benson + Peterka.
Either way, I think there's room for these 2 teams to negotiate and work something out that works both ways. Sadly, I don't think Buffalo upper-management has the stones to make a bold move like this and pull off a sign and trade blockbuster for a star like Pettersson though. The biggest trade we've made in years is trading a 2nd for Greenway... pathetic

Sabres-Flyers draft day trade
Picks being traded are -
To Buffalo: PHI 1st (5th overall)
To Philly: BUF 1st (9th overall), BUF 3rd (74th overall)
Draft pick trades this early in the 1st rd never happen, I know... but what if
I think from a Sabres POV this is a steep but fair price to pay to move up from 9 to 5. I would consider doing this from Buffalo if Wright-Slafkovsky-Cooley go 1-2-3, and Seattle takes one of Jiricek or Nemec at 4. I'd take the other at 5.
Flyers save money off the cap for their rebuild moving the Atkinson contract and pick up an early 3rd this year for moving down from 5 to 9

Sabres should expose Risto (protect Dahlin, Jokiharju & Borgen) and hope Seattle takes him. Addition by subtraction and the $5 mil in free cap space would be welcomed.
If I'm Seattle, I'd take one of our forwards we're going to have to expose (likely Asplund or Bjork) over Risto though, which is what I predict they'll do

Not bad, but still a No for me. Strome is a tough sell in any deal for BUF w/only 1 yr remaining on a UFA contract.
Swap Buchnevich for Strome and it's one of the better offers out there. Or take out Strome + 2023 2nd and replace with 2021 1st, or 2023 1st + prospect

no disrespect but BUF retaining any $ for 7 years is close to a non-starter. It's not good cap management to agree to burn $2.5 mil a year for the next 7 years. And the BUF 2020 1st is probably the most valuable piece in the OP.

I'm not sure any team's going to touch Skinner even with a retention.... 7 years with year 1 already at replacement level? That's too risky. Okposo had more value than Skinner this season... Don't think anyone's going to take a chance on that unless you make an irresistible offer. I don't think this cuts it.</div></div>
I think if you're daring enough to even think about acquiring Skinner, you're banking on last year being an outlier.
He scored 28, 37, 24, and 40 goals in the 4 previous years before last year. Avg that out and that's 32 goals/yr. That's a very strong yearly avg for 4 years & 280+ games worth of data.
Now I'm not saying I'm expecting him to avg 32 goals a yr for the rest of his career. But if he can avg 25 goals a year for lets say the next 4 of his 7 remaining contract years? I think most teams would pay around $6.5 mil for that production, that's the going rate for goal totals like that

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>As much as I love Rakell, and as much as I love my Ducks, Rakell doesn't = 7th overall pick. Maybe Anaheim adds Jacob Larsson?
I don't think it makes sense for Buffalo to trade that pick. Here's a deal I could live with that doesn't cost you it:
Jokiharju
2020 second
2021 second
{That may be the first time I've ever used those two pronouns in succession}</div></div>
I don't think moving Jokiharju is an option for us... I'll take the known commodity of his stature over the high draft pick, but that's just me.
Understand if not everyone feels the same there, 7th overall is an incredibly valuable pick. And this looks like a great draft class at the top again. But I've watched the Sabres pick 7th or 8th overall time and time again the past decade, and so far we haven't come close to drafting a player like Rakell. (Hopefully Cozens changes that)
Every team's situation is different. Dahlin has 1 yr left on his ELC, and Eichel is in his prime, we can't wait around 3 years hoping for another 7th overall pick to develop. And I can't give up Jokiharju, he's too valuable to us.
Rakell + Larsson for 7th OV sounds really good to me. I can't say no to 2 more Swedes! It's an aggressive move, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Rakell's contract is the final sealer for me, it offers so much flexibility for the rest of your roster to get a player like that for that price.

Interesting idea, I'll give you that, but overall the idea of paying Skinner $2.5 mil a year off the cap to play for the Rangers and giving up a top-8 overall pick this year doesn't sound very enticing.
If you want Skinner and a good prospect for Strome & Georgiev's rights though... I'm listening.
Props for being the first person I've seen so far offering a trade to acquire Skinner though

Eichel can't leave... he foolishly signed a long-term deal instead of betting on his own abilities & leaving himself an out, in case the Sabres didn't turn things around (narrator voice: they didn't)
He's stuck here for awhile. I said the moment he signed the deal, good for him for securing $80 mil, but I would've rolled the dice on a shorter bridge deal for less $ per year, to try and hit UFA sooner/get a bigger contract.

Miller was a healthy scratch in BUF because as hard as this is to type since it seems so unbelievable to me, both management and coaching agreed at one point that Zach Bogosian returning from his 4th hip surgery with about as much speed and mobility as a wooden crutch was a better player to dress than Miller.
All I'm trying to say is you can't look at how a team handled a player and say because he was sometimes a healthy scratch that he's not valuable anywhere. Pilut couldn't crack our lineup either... doesn't mean he didn't deserve to. He got so tired of our mess that he decided he'd rather play in the KHL for a year than deal with us again.

Rakell would cost our BUF 2020 1st or Cozens, and they're not getting Cozens. I feel confident in saying both of those statements as facts.
Now if that pick ends up being around 7th overall, like expected, I'd be tempted to work something out around that pick for Rakell. But would ANA is the question. I think maybe yes?

I didn't see much in UFA for $3 mil that was going to provide scoring help for us. If I was a Leafs fan, I'd be asking for a good prospect or good pick at least on top of Miller for Kapanen. Maybe that is the better trade if TOR would agree to it, but I think it'd be tough to work out.

The Sabres had problems because they had too many NHL defensmen having a healthy Dahlin, McCabe, Scandella, Ristolainen, MIller, Bogosian, Jokiharju, Montour for much of the year. They dressed 7 defensemen a lot and had a bit of a rotation.
Every leafs fan was dying for Miller last offseason on this place.
I don't think I would trade him for Johnsson, who is hurt, and has a big contract for a guy who has had one decent year.</div></div>
Injury concern is my biggest red flag for Johnsson, but I'd be willing to roll the dice. I don't think Miller is going to be a part of our long-term plan regardless. If we don't trade him, I'm sure he'll gladly walk to UFA in two years. Can't imagine he's too thrilled with Sabres management and ownership since he was acquired
