Also, Treliving just handed over all of the leverage to other teams by putting TOR so far over the cap. He should've moved that contract before free agency. Picking Ethan Cowan doesn't help either, because he is not a trade chip that is worth his draft position, whereas that draft pick was actually worth something before he used it on such a reach.</div></div>
Every smart GM knows that you have the most leverage AFTER you go over the cap and the other 31 teams have you over a barrel!

Ooh that is very interesting still got Willy on the block and I like the stones on this gm that's a very bold play but like you said it works...
Personally I would try to see if moving Nylander could return a $4M center for line 2?
But very bold here and I like that.

Oh i totally agree with Florida not getting the respect they deserve, In fact the Vegas odds makers now have them winning the Stanley Cup.

Thinking outside the box
As an Anaheim guy, I've said before that it doesn't make sense to me for Toronto to trade Holl for Manson. Even if that's an upgrade (and you can see from other responses that an appreciable segment of the Maple Leafs fan base doesn't think so), it's merely an incremental improvement. If you want to upgrade the defense, add, don't just exchange.
My theory is irrelevant in this case anyway, as even the most optimistic of us Anaheim guys wouldn't ask for more than the two forwards and the future second. And we'd still get howls from north of the border.

Probable final roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jaws49</b></div><div>I wouldn't want to start that way. I still don't know if there will be taxi squads this year. But this would be a good way to go. Mak wants out, Engval has a hard time staying in the lineup and doesn't do well with 4th line minutes and it's time to move on from Dermott. We can't afford 1.5 on the bench</div></div>
It's not how I would want to start either but I feel the first post is pretty accurate. We are only a few weeks away from training camp. I have a hard time believing 3 players will be traded off this roster. I guess Mikheyev only cause he wants more ice time but they don't want to lose him. Engvall is the only one I see being shipped out for like a 7th or future considerations.

Dumbas has work to do
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jaws49</b></div><div>Overpay for Tavares which set up massive over pays for Marthews and Marner, which will handcuff this team into the basement. If he signs Tavares to Crosby type money, 8 mill per year, then willy signs at 6, matthews at 8.5 and marner at 8... so 30.5 mill compared to around 40... ya, he has done a great job... please note the sarcasm. The defense is as good as it has been in years, but that's about to fall apart when we lose Reilly this year thanks to those contracts... also probably losing Campbell too</div></div>
I’ll agree with you on the Tavares part. Knowing he’d want $11M+, pursuing him shouldn’t have been their top priority. If they didn’t, signing Matthews, marner, and nylander to their current deals would’ve been fine. Matthews and nylander are worth the money, marner is overpaid. I would’ve loved them at those contracts you said, I would’ve loved if they did it for the sake of the team, but they didn’t, and I feel like Dubas completely lost those negotiations. I agree with you on that. Losing rielly is because of the $40M on 4 players. He’ll want at LEAST 7. Sandin is the choice to replace him but, is he really ready? Agree with you on that. I think the defence can survive without rielly, if they find a good replacement. Campbell can easily be resigned. 4.5-5x3 is as much as I’d do. He’s also found value in cheap players and added depth to the squad, and prospect pool, even with the late picks. I do think his criticisms are valid, but he gets way too much hate imo.

One big move
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>Pesce is easily one of the best defensive dmen in the league. Jarvis is an elite prospect who is has talent comparable to Marner and Point. Suzuki is a top end talent. Pesce is untouchable, and Jarvis is almost certainly untouchable as well. Canes don’t need Marner’s cap hit. Canes would be stupid to do this trade. Also don’t want someone who has been a part of a team’s losing culture. Would rather just go after Forsberg. At the very least, the Preds can win a playoff round.</div></div>
Now to say someone has talent compared to a guy who was 4th in league scoring, fastest player in nhl history to 200 assists. After Brad Marchand is the best 2 way winger in the league. That's a very big set of shoes to fill. Oh if Marner played the last regular season game he would have lead the league in ice time for forwards 2 years in a row.

Problem is, although I like domi he just isn’t good. Think Toronto is going for a shutdown 3rd line. I mean even a 1 for 1 with kerfoot and domi retained to match kerfoot seems like a loss.
I would wait to see what he wants in ufa next season. Think we have a full boat of heart and soul guys this year. Dubas obviously has at least one more move left to make this team cap compliant. I’m just not sure if it will involve bringing another roster player in.

... Riley Nash. Who Keefe's said he's liked since the bubble last season and wants a shutdown 3C. Nash currently makes $2.75M and in a flat cap and after a season which his offensive numbers went down, that cap hit likely comes down below $2M.
Need a top 6 winger? Dubas has shown he's able to get guys on lower contracts and bring in guys that need a change of scenery. Galchenyuk did fine there. Could easily be back next season for right around the same contract value. Then you've got all 3 (Hyman, 3C, top 6 LW) under the cap easily.
