No Backlund or Giordano

Yeah I think this would be a pretty good lineup considering the situation the Flames are in. Gaudreau/Lindholm/Neal was the line that produced Neal's only meaningful goal this season. Neal may be a defensive liability but having Lindholm (instead of Monahan) there should counter that. Hopefully the Flames can survive the weekend!

Change the Lines
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SmugTkachuk</b></div><div>I think I would let Monny center that second line, my ideal I think would be,
Tkachuk - Monahan - Lindholm - Fast hard on the puck couple of great guys for Lindholm to feed
Gaudreau - Backlund - Neal - Backlund shelters Johny's D game, Neal is mean and can police the Johnny situation and both guys set Neal up for more scoring
Bennett - Ryan - Czarnik - Fast line that has some sand paper to it, undersized for sure though
Jankowski - Dube- Frolik - Frolik defensively shelters the 2 young guys, Dube develops a bit of a defensive game for the coming years</div></div>
Yeah that could work. That would be a pretty well balanced lineup.
I just don't think Monahan plays well enough defensively
to play center. Honestly anything different from the status quo would be good.

Honestly I don't see Gillies as an NHL goalie in the future. He is too inconsistent and lets in a ton of softies. To me he is going to be another Irving or Ortio. Mason only has 1 year left and cap space should not be an issue this upcoming season.
I think Foo may need a little more seasoning in the minors to start this year and I believe Dube is a couple of years away. Roslovic has more potential than any of those guys you mentioned and adds more size and speed to the Flames lineup.

What Peters Wants
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vanderm</b></div><div>Tkachuk on the ice with Gaudreau might keep Tkachuk out of scrums -- the exact opposite of what you've said. He knows Johnny can't go anywhere near them, so maybe this move would have Tkachuk thinking only about production and hockey instead of the extra stuff, a la Marchand.
-------------------------
Like the Ryan and Ward signings, I think they make sense. Ward won't get an offer unless Peters really believes he's the perfect guy, which gives me plenty of confidence.
Absolutely HATE the Vanek signing. No thanks. Everyone's argument is that he's good on the PP...is that it? He's not the player he once was, and I'm not sure there's a cultural fit there. He's well known as a guy who lacks worth ethic. Don't see that aligning with what CGY is trying to build.</div></div>
I agree with everything you have said. Vanek is a wild card but could be a good depth winger but there are a lot of different guys that can fit that role too

Off the top of my head, I think $5M is the upper limit for that resume so far, even at a 7-8 year extension. Could see both sides working around the $4M mark on a 5-year deal. But, I have to put a list of comparable players together to understand what makes sense.</div></div>
One comparable is Michael Frolik. Both are real good defensively with the ability to score 40+ points. At the time Frolik signed his deal it was considered a little bit of an overpay. $4.1M is just a ballpark number but I wouldn't be surprised if Treliving signs him for something close to that number.

Karlsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eberles_Backcheck</b></div><div>Eww I hope Dahlin doesn’t go to Van... :cry
Yea honestly Chia had the most gravy job in the NHL.. can believe how badly he screwed that up.. ugh
Think about it.. if Chiarelli did nothing, he’d have McDavid, Hall, Draisaitl, Nuge, Eberle, maybe not barzal but at least a piece (I heard Erikkson Ek), Nurse, Klefbom, Benning, Puljujarvi, And probably still Yamamoto. I’m sure you could make a package for Karlsson our of these pieces....</div></div>
Haha if that lottery scenario happens I will cry. Yeah if you really think about it, Chiarelli is basically the only reason why EDM is still no good. The thing that drives me crazy is that in his season ending press conference he basically blamed the players and coaches for their awful season. Could you remove yourself more from responsibility? If he stopped selling his $1 parts for 50 cent ones, he would not be in this mess. There is just no accountability on Chiarelli's part, and I'm afraid you Oilers fans will suffer through another disappointing season because he is controlling your roster. It will only get worse if he fires McLellan, who I think is one of the best coaches in the NHL.
From a sympathetic perspective, I feel bad for you guys because you deserve much better.
From my Flames Fan perspective though, Chiarelli is one of my favourite people. He constructed the BOS team that beat VAN for the cup and completely ruined the Oilers by undervaluing his assets. I hope he stays in EDM for as long as possible!

Yah it sucks not having a pick. The worst case scenario for the Flames is NYI, VAN, and EDM winning the lottery. So for my sanity I hope that doesn't happen. If EDM wins it should turn their franchise around, but that's also what people said when they won the McDavid lottery...

The problem with trading for Karlsson is he has to sign an extension for the trade to make sense. Too risky to make the trade without an extension</div></div>
Agreed. An extension is a MUST. This deal may be too tough for EDM to make as they're gonna be in cap hell for the foreseeable future, so going after another good defenceman would probably make more sense. But Chiarelli is the GM so what anything goes. Dahlin would be ideal for EDM but as a Flames fan, I am praying EDM does not win the lottery again.

I too think that Karlsson wants to stay in OTT but the question is does Melnyk want to pay him $12M+? That Domi trade is a little bit of a stretch. Maybe swapping the 3rd with a 2nd round pick would make it more realistic.

I too think BUF would get enough in this deal to retain some salary. Maybe not $1.5M but they would probably need to retain some for CGY to do a deal for ROR. I appreciate your feedback as it is very helpful!

What The Flames Should Do
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ekpaul87</b></div><div>I would completely agree, and trading him now would be selling way low. But I still think he's better suited to playing on the right side, and I don't think there's space to have Hamilton, Brodie, Hamonic and Andersson all on the right, so someone has to go (far less Stone). Maybe trading Andersson for Daniel Sprong or something like that is the way to go, but even at $3.875 per for Hamonic, that gets super expensive for a third pairing guy. I also think he has pretty high trade value to someone like the Leafs who are paper thin on the right side and a coach like Babcock who loves those gritty vets.</div></div>
I too think Brodie plays better on the right side. However, if you remember when Gio went down in the first playoff year, Brodie played the left side with Engelland and played well there (more evidence he and Gulutzan were not a fit). But I do like him on the right side better. I would do Andersson for Sprong, trading from a position of strength for a much needed RW. The one thing with Hamonic is that he is a character guy, which is something CGY desperately needs. The cap situation isn't too concerning for me since it is going up next year and the Flames top guys are locked in at very good cap hits. For the right offer (i.e. something similar to what we traded to NYI value wise) I would trade Hamonic.

I think it's more likely that they move Brodie than Hamonic, but I would prefer to keep Brodie.</div></div>
Agreed. Now I am a big Brodie guy so I may be biased but I am hesitant to move him. His game really regressed under Gulutzan and I would be very interested to see how he plays under a new coach. If he is still no good, then trade him I guess.

It's a ton to give up for a guy who is essentially the same player as Mikael Backlund. If you look at their scoring rates, play driving, expected goals%, almost everything is identical.
Personally, I think the Flames would be better off to sign or trade for a scoring winger, and hope that Jankowski can still develop into a decent scorer at the NHL level. I wouldn't mind seeing them move Hamonic for a young RW if there's a deal out there. Don't think he has fit very well with the Flames.</div></div>
I agree this is an overpay for ROR but if the Flames were to go after him, that is what I think it would take knowing that other teams will be in on him. It is probably too rich for Treliving but this kind of shakeup is what I think he has to do to send the players a message that last season was unacceptable.
A right-handed scoring winger would be nice and I think it would take something similar to what I gave up for ROR to get 'er done. As for Hamonic, I would give him another year. He never looked comfortable with Brodie so hopefully the new coach will see that and pair him with someone else.

Both 1st round picks. This is basic.</div></div>
Treliving is a hard-ball negotiator. Jankowski may have proven himself to be a better center than Bennett but he has only played less than 1 season of NHL hockey. Bennett had 2+ years with more points than Jankowski has this year. He's got no arbitration rights so the Flames are in a position of power

Brodie seems to be the guy on the way out and I'd agree with what you said about him.
Edit: Also if we're giving up Rasmus Andersson (top D prospect) to Pittsburgh, I'd rather get their top RW prospect in Daniel Sprong vs a 25 year old RW who has topped out at 38 points.</div></div>
I totally agree with all of your points. Sprong would probably be more attractive to the Flames for sure. My reasoning for acquiring Rust is just because he has won two cups and I think his experience would be valuable in the room. I would definitely do the trade for Sprong though
