Navigating the expansion draft
Moving 3 picks and a young prospect to sign a 3rd line defender and a decent forward is a great way to mess up your future while also not getting better.

The same place you would fit them in if you kept Kuzy. You shouldn't not go for it because it might hinder the progress of some lottery ticket prospect. If all those guys work out, great play them on the wing or have them take Eller and Dowds place.

One thing people on this site don't know is that Hertl is a fan favorite. Imagine Marleau being traded in his prime. Regardless of what you'd get, the damage to the franchise would go beyond the trade.</div></div>
Yeah I get that, I was reading through some of the SJS Armchair GMs and half of them were calling for a rebuild while the other half wanted the team to go all-in
True but if it makes the team better in the long run I think most people would forgive (especially if the FO spins it). Like if Kuzy went out and shined for the team and you were guaranteed 4 more years of him I think most fans would forgive.
Side note: is there any chance SJS trades Evander Kane? If so what do you think he would command

Maybe idk. Another package I think could work is something like Kuzy+2/3 for Hertl would get it done. Washington gets an guy who is better rn while San Jose gets a high upside guy who, if he can get his act together, can either be flipped for more picks or could be the guy San Jose builds around for years to come.

For a guy they can sign in free agency in a year? No shot any team gives up a 1st and a A prospect.

Capitals Realistic Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boush</b></div><div>I don't see the Caps replacing Hagelin with another winger over $2mil. If/when he is moved, they'll get another value player or cycle through some prospects. Same thing with Kempny/Jensen - they'd move Kempny, the rusty LD, before they move Jensen, the capable RD. Overall strategy, though, I think you've got nailed. Count me in the camp with you that thinks Eller is not as safe as some believe.</div></div>
I agree to an extent but for me the Hagelin move wasn't about money as much as its about age. I don't want to have a 32 year old 4th liner on the team when the team is already one of the oldest in the league. Also I think the Caps 4th line is an advantage so I wouldn't move any of those guys unless I got back in return equal player/an upgrade and in my eyes going from Hags to McGinn is an upgrade while going from Hags to cheap player/prospect is a downgrade (unless the prospect is like a B/B+ prospect but you wouldn't play those guys on your 4th line).
My thing about Kempny/Jensen is that you can get a pick back for Jensen while you would have to attach a pick to Kempny. So because of that, I would rather have a pick and Kempny rather than Jensen and 1 less pick. Also if Kempny struggles you can easily replace him with Alexeyev.
Thank you I appreciate that, yeah for sure I don't think a 32 year old 3C is safe when the GM is talking about being aggressive.

Sure but Hertl is a FA after this year so move him for something before FA. If Kuzy turns out to be good then either A. You can flip him for picks especially since he's under contract for 4 more years B. Build around him and Kane.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ClockReads2113</b></div><div>I'd kill for Hertl. Would love for that to happen.
No way Caps trade away Eller unless they absolutely have to. Kempny isn't coming back from that injury and being 2nd pair, think his top 4 days are over. And Fehervary will definitely be on the team.</div></div>
For sure, Hertl would fit nicely on the team. I don't know about that, the GM keeps talking about being aggressive and you can't be aggressive without giving something up and I think the player you gotta give up is Eller. I'm not sure but if that is the case, Kempny and Alexeyev could switch. Fehervary was an interesting one but the article I linked wasn't too bullish about him on the team this year. I think in 2022 when Schultz and Kempny's contracts come off the books, that's when you'll see Fehervary.

Marner - Why and Why Not
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NoVaSpartan</b></div><div>Its a steep price, but the caps do have McMichael or Eller to step into the 2C role.</div></div>
I don't think McMichael is close, most beat reporters/guys on the radio think he's 2 years away. Maybe they're wrong but idk just seems that fans think he's much closer than he actually is. I think the best solution in this situation would be move Eller to 2C (like you said) and go out and sign a 3C but to do that TOR would have to retain some salary.

Caps decline, it's going to take more than Kerfoot and two throw ins to get Wilson. Kerfoot and a B/B+ prospect might get it done.

Yeah I agree he's definitely got value. I think the wakeup call might happen, I feel as if he's gotten too comfortable with the Caps and getting traded would cause him to step up his game A. to get back at the Caps B. to prove himself to his new teammates.

He's still a 60-70 point per year guy. People are acting like he's a 30-40 point guy. Washington does want to trade him but they aren't just going to give him up. The package would probably need to be, at the very least,: a 2/3C, a good prospect and a 2/3rd round pick. So this package that you have is good.
